Trouble With Air Conditioning

My Mondeo has the following issue: the heater fan sometimes blows hot air on my feet even though the air conditioning is off. Whenever I switch on the air conditioning, the stream of air on my feet ceases. This appears to happen in a haphazard manner, at least I've been unable to discern a pattern so far. Sometimes it blows, sometimes it does not.

It could be broken or I may have pressed a button accidentally. What do you think?
