Hi,

The door ajar signal will prevent full locking, and may set the alarm off, if it is not working.

First step is to find out which door. Most Fords have a battery saver circuit, that turns the interior lights off after half an hour or so, even with a door open, or with the light switch on. Turn the light back to auto, leave it on, and see if it turns off. Then open a door, and if that puts the lamp on, it is not the faulty one. Repeat for each door.

On the Focus, there is a quicker way:

Press and hold in the rear demister button while starting the car and you will get a tone.

Once activated the test mode will sound a tone when any switch or lever is triggered.

Open each door in turn, bonnet, boot, wiper, indicators etc and a tone will sound/hazard lights will flash which will make it easier to pin down any faults.

May not work on the Fusion, but worth a try.

The door ajar switches are built in to the door latches. Once the faulty one is identified, removing the door trim panel will reveal the wiring & latch, for further tests.

Hi peter

I followed your steps with the light. Its the driver door the light does not come on. All the other doors and tailgate all turn the light on.

I am pleased that worked!

Unfortunately, when it comes to fixing it, I am of less help. I know how to remove door trims on a Focus, it is pretty easy, but there are a few little tricks to release the hidden clips. Haynes is where I found it all. If you have some basic tools & a smidgen (or more!) of diy / technical knowhow, Haynes would be a good investment. They are rather laughed at by some (inc. me at times!), there is a lot missing, and some wrong stuff in them, but they are still an invaluable goldmine of info.

Otherwise you are at the mercy of a local garage. But at least you can point them in the right direction: Door ajar switch on driver's door.
