Ah Look Its Snowing....again...dam...im Stuck

Hi folks, heres a story i thought i'd share and make you think "sucks to be you"

well anyways on my way back to work (raf fylingdales), high on a hill between whitby, pickering and scarborough. I was driving back through all the snow. going up a hill i was lured into a false sense of security as the road was plowed and gritted so i carried on.

next thing the road got slushy, then more slushy then white, got whiter then bam...stopped...found a 3ft drift, which obviously screwed with my ground clearance and couldnt get free.

with no signal on my mobile phone to get help. i was debating to whether don my cold weather combats, which i always carry with me in the winter months and walk the remaining 8 miles or stay with the car and keep warm.

well after about 15 mins i noticed a new set of headlights and flashing orange beacon coming up from behind. for my safety i stayed in the car and waited. turned out to be the highways agency inspector. after a short discussion we figured we cant do anything right now and the best bet is to get me to some accomodation, so i rang the camp driver up who came to the rescue in a trusty old land rover defender.

but anyways inbetween the time of waiting in the highways inspector hilux, a north yorkshire police turned up coming from the other way...now is it me or are some police members stuck up and have their heads up their own !Removed!.

he was trying to screw me over for going past a road closed sign...as i was about to say something the highways inspector defended me and said there was no sign because he was carrying it

anyways i left the car at approx 2230hrs with the engine off and hazards lights on. expecting the car to have a flat battery when i get back to it i took a booster pack with me.

at 0930 i arrived back at the car and started digging the snow from around it and a highways plowman attached a tow rope to a digger and yanked it out...made short work. but what i was very surprised to find that the car started first time easily sat there for about 11 hours with hazards on.

anyways the car is free and parked somewhere safe now

now what scares me is they say its gonna get worse before it gets better....how much worse can it get here day after tomorrow (movie) i'm thinking

oh well, like i say i thought id share that story to amuse you.

Glad to hear your OK and the car is fine.

Mind you if you had read all the worsening signs as you relayed them to us in your post. Taken into consideration your on the North York Moors............it was a given.

I hope your in catering, I'd hate to think we are relying on you to spot a sneaky enemy fighter on radar............... :P :D

haha i like that joke at the top...but its true at the moment.

it happened to fast the change from plowed and gritted road to unpassable and stuck. mind you i wasnt the only one to have got stuck up there. we had to rescue an elderly civvy bloke from his van on the way back to camp. i fear if he was left there that would have been a fatality.

haha nah my dad was a RAF chef though...im a comms techy and not allowed to look at the radar screens XD

Damn thats scary! I would have being flapping like a complete lemon haha and I was complaining about not being able to get my car off the street in a foot of snow.... at least your out and the old bill didnt one over on you.

glad you took the ribbing as just that. I see you rolled a pug [three times] impressive. My lad wrote his first car off by putting it on its roof in a country ditch, took him about twelve weeks from passing his test to do that. I then bought him one for his twenty first, he had that for sixteen weeks [if my memory serves me right]before he had that on its roof. Both times coming back from visiting his girlfriend......possibly he was driving it through his !Removed!...I donno :ph34r:

Anyway he joined the RAF and learnt to drive properly, he was a Snow Drop.. :D

yeah i relatively calm, i was more worried about leaving the car there by itself. but yeah i dont do things by half i go all the way.

i think its the rush of passing the test and thinking your colin mcrea or jenson button that causes a few new drivers to show off in front of their mates and end up crashing. ive seen it enough times like, especially when going through a certain fast food restaurant chain. fiestas, corsas, puntos, 306's pulling handbrake turns and purposly sliding on the snow. kinda makes ya think if they hit you, are they fully insured on their mothers policy?

Snow Drop ey...we have over 250 police posts, including MGS and Civvy Armed Police here, cant !Removed! without one trying to book you for it haha. nah they all good lads like. where abouts is he posted if you dont mind me asking.

John, he did nine years, was out before the second Iraq war. He had served all over, Bosnia, Croatia, Saudi Arabia [sharing a base with the Spams]And did three years in Northern Ireland. Did quite a few aircraft protection trips [for the civvies reading this] this is where RAF police accompany flights to provide overnight airport protection of the aircraft, in countries with less than satisfactory security.

Since leaving the RAF, he has done a few jobs including embassy security manager, oil field security management [back to back month on month off] managing a force of 150 locally hired security officers some of whom where armed with AK 47's. In his current position he manages the security and health and safety department of a Multi National Company working in the oil support and major infrastructure field. His immediate boss is the company president.

Fantastic money, and being non UK resident he only pays 10% local country income tax. Plenty stress with the job though, so he earns it. Ten hour days, six days a week but he gets two weeks off every six weeks. And the company will pay there and back flights to anywhere in the world on those leave periods.

I came home today from work (to those regular posters thats where ive been 5am starts dont do me any justice) my road is never in the sun and its got a blind point on as you go up a fairly normal gradient so there i was half asleep on my heated leathers after an 8hr busy shift and next thing i new i was sideways after not even turning a corner the car just slid :huh: in complete truth i just didnt care its my road all my neibours and i get on and i was just far to tired to care and the focus has been a complete !Removed! recently so if it gets written of il jump for joy.

Night before that i nipped into the local morrisons with a few mates in there cars and we checked the handbrake cables :P Is it just me or does doing this (with in reason) teach you about car control more and how to control slides etc and also about controlling the throttle alot more.

Dont have any family in the RAF just the army :( commandos though muahhaha not me my cusin im to fat and lazy :rolleyes:

dont blame ya mate, i'm absolutly knackered after a night shift 8pm till 8am followed by a 90 mile drive to gateshead, so i know whats its like.

oh god, chav! haha funny thing is, in darlington, we too have a chav boy racer group in their corsa, pintos etc at morrisons. i had one the other week, not sure on what car tho (looked like a corsa), no more than a 1.2 engine, had a wide body kit on and had 5 chavs in(really chaved out). they came along side me on a normal 30mph road (traffic both ways) looked, gave me a few hand gestures...so me being me i kept up behind them, got to a 2 lane point before a roundabout, dropped it to 4th at *ahem* 80mph, got along side smiled and waved and took off...their faces were priceless, should of got a photo really..

Ahh the chav often get a few round here at night in corsa's battered them all bar the redtops 1.6 sport's do well to keep up though lol one in a vtr saxo i banned off at the lights (must of been around the world) pulled up along side n was like wtf's in that "2.5 v6 mondeo engine mate fully converted" pfft &#33;Removed&#33; believed me haha love chavs there just fun :P . I just love the sleeper look of my focus + the exhaust ive got is mega you can crawl quietly upto the lights then just boot it and it roars its heads of there usually like :o really tickles me pickle.

Lol, I do love my car, when it works, I have given many a chav a run for their money... even a 1.6 110 HP. its pretty funny as the car is entirely standard, and as you say, get on a motorway, and do approximately speed limit and still cane them! I have challenged many a vehicle and come up trumps, but till I get the begger sorted out, I will be "allowing" the chavs to win... I like to tease them, and accelerate to "the legal limit" and then I ease off the throttle, let them catch up to me and then put my foot down and laugh as I see the look of dissapointment in the rear view mirror! that is priceless!

The best one so far, and my most prized moment in this car, was a drive down a lot of A roads, whereby I kept a 2.5 ltr Jaguar XJS with an old chav in it, he kept going for the overtake, I kept kicking the gears down, and kept him behind me on every corner for a good 30 miles... that was fun :)

Anyway getting back to the topic at hand, and the comment I was originally going to reply to... Edge, I do think that throwing your car into a skid on the ice can help you to control the car more. I am myself a northerner, and my first car was a 1.0 ltr 4 Gears Citroen AX. I had muchos funos on the empty, icy dual carriageways, I used to deliberately try to skid the car to practice getting it back under me. It came in handy many a time so far, and has yet to let me down *knock on wood*
