Hi,

my ford focus 1.8 makes a tapping noise only when it has been sitting for a long time let it stand for about 2 minutes running and its fine.I have changed the oil and fillter on it + i put STP in but still has not changed anything, i think they are hydraulic tappets but not to sure if they are. This has only started the last few weeks as the frost and the snow has fell. Any help on this problem or places that could work on it would be appreciated...

Thanks jamie .

They will be hydrolic cam followers(also called tappets), so long as it quietens down once the oil has reached them I wouldnt be to concerned, the oil is a lot thicker this time of year aswell adding the stp has made it even thicker so's making it a little harder for the pump to push it to the top of the engine when cold, as said nothing to be worried about yet/for a while so long as it quietens down once the oil reaches them, you could try a thinner oil but I myself wouldnt.
