Immobiliser light?

Earlier on today, I noticed a light flashing as I drove along the road, a red dot continuously flashing in/out. I don't know much about cars, but I'm taking this to be the engine immobiliser light? as it was in that region, where the alarm dot flahes, shouldn't it disable and stay off, as soon as you start the car? I found it kinda freaky, but continued the short distance to the supermarket anyway, where upon leaving there all was back to normal, no lights flashing when driving.

This is the first time I've noticed it, and am now a little worried incase it's some kinda fault and it means the immobiliser isn't working like it ought to be.

Can anyone enlighten me? is this something to worry about?

had the same thing on my car a few days ago, switched off and it disappeared, not had it since but made a note for my 12 week check up, if it happens again will go to dealer before the check date.
