Concerns over automatic problems

Yep likewise, my Mk3.5 conventional auto has those lit up in the same blue as the rest of the dash and radio etc.

It must be just the powershift that's left in the dark then, it does seem a bit strange when everything else lights up

  • I’m still bitter about the multi link. And the one reverse light...also the paintwork and the sat nav graphics and the mpg and the yellow halogen headlights apart from that it’s alright.

  • 2.0 diesels came with wet clutch Powershift - robust and reliable (for this type of gearbox). In fact this Peugeot engine is also said to be reliable. Not a bad combination. Gearbox oil changes are re

  • You can go a little older - the automatic gearbox on the Mk3.5 (2015-2018) petrol engines is a 6-speed torque convertor so isn’t plagued by the clutch issues.

I have a 2019 Focus Active X 1.5 Auto and have a problem with the gearbox.  I seems to change gear fine but changes up too quickly in the higher gears causing the car to struggle.  It’s been back to the garage once but they couldn’t find anything wrong with it!  Driving locally and in town is fine as only the lower gears are used but motorway and A road driving In the higher gears is not pleasurable.

Has anyone else had this proble.

Thanks

Kevin

Have you tried Sport mode ? that should hold lower gears longer.

I don't have an auto myself, I've got the 1.5 manual. The gear change indicator on that suggests changing up gears way to early, so it wouldn't surprise me if the auto was similar.

I’ve got the same 8 speed auto and similar engine. Low revs at high speeds for sure . Sports mode would remedy the issue but u shouldn’t have to . What speeds are u having this issue?
Maybe see if your dealer can get another auto focus to compare with..

The transmission control unit will be tuned for economy above performance, so realistically this will always happen. Sport mode or put it in manually for a few minutes while you sort yourself up to speed - this is a bit easier with a paddle-shift though. The 6 speed torque convertor auto I've got in the Mk3.5 isn't too bad, though sometimes at 43mph it'll change up into 6th and the car feels a bit gutless, then other times I'm accelerating on the motorway up to 70 and it'll still be hanging in 4th or 5th as I approach 70, only shifting into 6th after a few seconds at 70. Guess it depends on a lot of things these days, including accel pedal position, car tilt (incline/decline) etc.

Think we're just at the mercy of the cheaper boxes we'll have by owning a Ford (I believe my 6 speed is pretty much a GM 'box as it's also in the Astra in a very, very similar configuration) compared to the ZF8s of your BMWs etc.

I have a 2019 focus 1.5 diesel auto I’m also having gearbox problems when it changes from second to third the engine revs up a lot before changing it’s ok when the engine is cold it starts to happen when it’s warming up and is fine when the engine is at full temperature anybody else had this problem

I’ve got a Mk4 auto , done almost 18k miles. Can’t fault the gearbox.
Motorway journeys are a pleasure , B roads too!

No But. Ford have discontinued the 8 speed gearbox as of months ago. I don’t know why. Looks like it’s a 7 speed they are using now.

2012 Focus 2.0 diesel powershift, the gearbox is a piece of *****, not smooth at all. So don’t go for my model 😂

That’ll be a mk3 ? I don’t know much but I think the mk3.5 had fixed the issue.

Your maybe due a recall on that? Have you contacted ford about it?

MK3 yeah I think it applied to Australia only? Somewhere I read anyway. I could ask, no harm. I’ve had so many problems with it, new one is a hissing sound when accelerating which I guessed an intake leak somewhere but I can’t seem to find it.

I guess there's a reset / calibration procedure for the twin clutches (but I don't see how if its an engine temp related peculiarity, why this will be the best fix)....

if you can't do that or it doesn't help, go to a big dealer who likes doing software updates and get them to check the car out....

or buy the ODBlink EX cable, put a battery charger on it and using forscan check if there's newer software for the gearbox....  although the guru here suggests it doesn't always find the right software and offers something close...

don't assume its a car and so software isn't the answer...most cars these days re now full of appallingly assembled, super budget chinese computers.  And with no one left in the building writing software that's fit for purpose anywhere in the world for any application.  There's usually a software update every other day as the world falls to bits....

for example: in March 2020 Microsoft forcibly removed adobe flash player on win 10 machines... but in their incompetence they have destroyed windows.  The first 4 repair patches made it worse they are now on the 7th major patch for March with over 12 gig worth of data trying to fix windows...

Since when? Even the latest price list for the Focus shows the 8-speed auto available. Thought the 7-speed was a DCT and only on certain platforms, compared to the 8-speed torque converter box which is used on everything else?

It’s already been in for a software update at the main dealer that didn’t make any difference it’s going back this Wednesday for them to have another look just can’t understand it’s fine when the engine is cold then stats over Accelerating then it’s fine when it’s up to full temperature

Was Forduk on social media told me. But even if it’s still available, auto 8 or 7 , in petrol motors it’s 1L 125 engines only. The 155 mild hybrid is the only engine I’d consider but it’d need to be auto. Price lists change all the time , Ford don’t update them very often even after making changes.

ask for evidence they actually did it....  these days its normal to do nothing and claim they did....

if in warranty make sure you drive a couple of other ones to compare.. if they are both the same as each other and clearly different to yours... kick off and don't take the dealer's lying BS.  Tell then you want ford technical bod to see the car.

these days the dealerships are full of children, the closest they've ever got to driving a car was on grand theft auto

Yes, as mentioned earlier, latest list (25 March) shows 8 speed fwiw.

It seems odd that Ford don't do MHEV with auto (same story with the Fiesta), when VW Group are the other way round - on the new Golf and it's siblings you can't get manual with MHEV. I read a piece somewhere by a VW Group technical guy where he was saying the electronics/algorithms etc were so complicated for MHEV you couldn't have the driver messing things up by changing gear whenever they feel like it! As they're collaborating these days, perhaps VW could tell Ford how to do an MHEV auto and vice versa!😀

To be honest, nobody should sell manuals anymore regardless of MH or not. Need to get rid of this silly Victorian nonsense about having to manually engage different gears 😉

Had the car back in at Ford dealership yesterday about the gearbox problem with engine over accelerating when changing up gear all seems to sorted now they said they have done two software updates and recalibrated the gearbox up to now all is working ok

I believe the aussies called it the powersh1t gearbox and I'm pretty sure there was a lawsuit against Ford.

I owned a 2015 Mk 3.5 with a powersh1t gearbox and general driving was fine but when I would drive from Brighton to Bristol to visit my mate, by the time I got to Reading the gear change got very jumpy. It's gone now and I now own MK4 1.6 auto which I love

Hi - I have a Ford Focus 2 ltr with the automatic dual clutch transmission.  It works great most of the time, but then it seems that the computer/clutch/gearbox get into a fight.  Usually the first to second shift gets really rough. Sometimes the start out in 1st gear is rough also.

I have found that if I go to "Driver Assist" on the menu and TURN OFF THE ANTISKID feature the problem goes away for quite a while. The car will automatically turn the ANTISKID back on next time you start it. This is not a permanent fix, but it seems to work instantly and is free.   HOWEVER DO NOT do this if you are in a snow/ice drive.

Is there anyone who have already done high mileage on 6f15 on focus/fiesta/ecosport with 1.0 ecoboost? Or, even better, if you have already collected statistics on these gearboxes. Are these ATs reliable or not? Is there any common milage, when problems start?

As soon as I understand gear changes on it are often accompanied by jerks and in general it does not work very smoothly.  Well, obviously, the consumption is also far from mechanics or a preselective "robot".  But that doesn't concern me as much as the question of reliability over time.
