Use AGM first. Charge for at least 8 hours.

If battery fails to fully recharge, then try again with the recondition mode.

Remember: Positive (red) lead of charger on to the positive + battery terminal.

Negative (black) lead of charger on to the main chassis earth point, Do NOT connect to the battery terminal.

Thanks so much pal. A newb at this stuff. So helpful. Going to go sort it now and hopefully by tonight it will fire back to life 😁

We have a winner ! A.A. patrolman turns up after just 15 minutes, he's seen the issue before & as stated by Alex & others there is indeed a securing clip lurking behind the release cover

  • @unofix Thanks for that helpful idea. Great news all i went back out side and tried the handle again as per @TomsFocus video but this time instead of trying to pull it laying across the seats as

  • If the battery is below 7v then get the engine jump started and leave it running for half an hour.  That'll put enough charge back in the battery for the Maypole to work.  That's what I did with mine.

Well hanging upside down with a torch and a knife and can't for life of me see this clip I have to try to knock off. Checked the manual and just don't see it. So frustrating.

Don't want to call out RAC at this point as they always try flog you a battery. Trying to find a YouTube video but still no joy......will update if I manage to get in 😂😂

The clip pulls out of the top, it's part of the lever. It's hard to explain but not too difficult when you've done it once.

40 mins later and took your advice. I could here a small rattle when angling knife down and up. Chuff knows where the clip went if it existed, but the lever has fallen off now.

Just need to climb through the car and get the socket set now 😂

Hopefully it goes back on and I find where ever the clip went. Failing that I carry a socket around with me for next time I want to pop bonnet. Thanks for staying with me Have all the sockets but can't work out which fits. Is it a special ford tool?

 😁

Well managed to get in. Connected the battery charger but just gives flashing green light as though it isn't connected right.

Tssssssk. Maybe I will have to call out RAC after all 😢

I wonder if it's too dead to charge and needs a jump start. Or the battery so low it's dead!?

**Update**

I have now attached the negative to the end of the negative metal that connects to the car. Maybe the negative has to be in right place. I had attached to a metal part of the body work. Anyways lights are on part 2 and making some strange clocking noises. Hopefully all part of the process 🤞

If you look carefully in the engine bay, there is an upright piece of metal with a circular hole which just sits to the left of the passenger headlight housing behind the radiator. Gives you plenty of room to connect the negative clamp.

Thanks all. Still charging on cycle number 3 now.

So that I don't leave it all outside in damp overnight. Is it fine to disconnect after a few hours and then hook it all up tomorrow? Will the charger pick up where it left off?

Also, would it be safe to try start the car once unhooked, for curiosity that it now turns on. I can then switch immediately back off and go bed with price of mind.

Or is it best to complete a full charge before doing anything? Thanks in advance again 👍

Can anyone please tell me what size socket i need to the release bonnet system? The biggest HEX i have is 24mm and that doesnt fit (might do with a mallet but dont want to break anything else.)

Remove the kick panel from the body (by the release handle) and get someone to sit on the front of the bonnet while you pull the release lever

Thanks Dave, although isn't that a bit drastic and could i even do that with the passenger door closed? I have the release handle off no problem.

I just need the correct HEX size and socket everyone else used to attach to the hood release mechanism, im currently borrowing a set but I dont believe I have big enough. I dont want to keep purchasing incorrect sizes. Thanks all.

Do you have a tape measure near the car?

I found I could open mine without removing the lever on a 2021 Focus Active.  Did you attempt that before dismantling it?

@TomsFocus I have same 21 Focus Active but alas i cannot open it that way. It this rate it seems easier to get a hand saw out and chop the curve off the leaver!!!

Strange.  They must have changed the shape of the lever or the door card at some point.  If you've got any mole grips or waterpump pliers they'd probably do the same job.

This is the video I took of mine.

Why can't you open the passenger door?

Use the key

There is only a key barrel on the driver's side.

The bonnet release was designed for LHD, RHD disassembly of the handle is an after thought.

If you Dead Lock the car then opening the Drivers Door with the Key does not open the other doors, Single Locking does, which is why I never Dead Locked my car until I fitted a decent Battery.

Single locking doesn't unlock the others when you use the key if the main battery is flat, it's just that you can use the inside door handle to unlock/open the door.

@TomsFocus Thanks for the video, handle looks similar in shape, just not working for me. So frustrating. Mines Active X model, maybe door shape is more forgiving on yours 🤷‍♂️

@alexp999 such an oversight for RHD vehicles, really poor from Ford.

@Tizer What battery did you fit? I might have to go that option if recharge doesnt work

currently looking on amazon for supersized tin openers lol... 😅

Yep, that's what I was getting at, you can't use the inside Handle if the car is Double Locked but you can if it is Single Locked, which is the smart thing to do if someone is unsure whether their Battery will give up before they unlock the car again.

Not everyone knows that which is why I mentioned it.

Like most of the other Mk4 Focus owners on here I fitted this one and bought it from Tanya. It has a higher capacity than the Factory Fitted one.

Just how dead/flat is the battery ? do you get any ignition lights on the instrument panel (not trying to start it) ?

@unofix I tried the passive key method, power came back on for the dash cam, couple of lights on the centre console but nothing else. But car did nothing else...

@Tizer Cheers will look at those thanks.

Just real strange no issues prior to this to give any kind of warning, came back from the gym saturday night at 8pm, sunday 9am this situation...Factory fitted one sucks if it dies after less then 3.5 years!!

That's good news 😀

You can make up a little lead for use with your battery charger. Then you can recharge the battery via the cigar/power socket in the centre consul. The thing is with the Mk4 the power socket is only live if the ignition is on (which is why I asked if there was any power in the battery). You can charge the battery for about 15 minutes via the socket and then you will be able to use the central locking to unlock the doors and open the bonnet.

Ask if you want a little diagram of how to do it, if this is something you want to do.

@unofix Thanks. That was yesterday morning when I tried that, not had a chance to anything else. Still stuck with not being able to open bonnet yet. You think there will still be power even after this amount of time?

How do you charge the battery your way if I cannot open the bonnet? or did you just miss type that?

Thanks

No need to open the bonnet.

You will need a cigar lighter plug (for example: from Amazon or from Halfords).

Connect up the leads from your battery charger to the leads on the cigar lighter plug. Make sure to insulate them with some tape. Open the drivers door and then plug in to the power socket in the centre consul. Switch on the battery charger, and turn on the cars ignition. DO NOT try and start the car. Let it charge the battery for about 15 minutes. Then use your key fob and press the unlock button. There should be enough power in the battery to open the doors. Once the car is fully unlocked you can then open the bonnet as normal and charge the battery in the usual manner.
