Labour condemns expected delay in ban on new petrol and diesel cars

A senior Labour MP has reiterated the party's commitment to reinstate the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, if Rishi Sunak confirms the delay this afternoon.

The party's shadow transport secretary, Louise Haigh, has signalled this on X, formerly Twitter, arguing the government's change in policy will damage the British car industry.

How's everyone going to vote at next election? Not conservative? Not labour? Etc. Is there a monster raving loony party still? 😂😂

I always thought Ford were too keen to try and go all electric and ditch the Fiesta to totally convert the Cologne plant to electric, a thought shared by my 2 nearest Ford dealers staff. When in there last week I said I wouldn't be surprised if Ford did a tie-up venture with another manufacturer for a small petrol car to tie them over in the run up to 2030. Both dealers said there isn't much of an appetite to make the change to electric amongst there regular customers. Looking forward to Ford's response over the next few weeks if the new date is 2035.

Looking like a sensible option compared to the rest of them!

It does seem, though, that (depending on which survey you believe) the public mood is not yet that supportive of a 2030 ICE ban, so this could be a reason to vote one way or another. (I'm very much in the "none of the above camp" at the mo.)

But really, all this "will they, won't they" just adds uncertainty for manufacturers who are, after all, trying to run a business. This is the kind of issue that requires a national consensus (as do health and education imo) not political game playing.

I don't blame you to honest, I've tried putting the miss information straight then get silence after.

I'm keeping an open mind on zero emission vehicles and when I'm fully convinced that an alternative to ICE will work for me, I'll no doubt go for it (if I'm still around!).

So I for one find your comments on your EV experiences very interesting and informative and hope you'll keep them coming.

My apologies Tom. My bad. Consider my wrists slapped.

I've always said and still stand by it "GREEN" is expensive

On a positive note, couple of forthcoming approximately Fiesta-size EVs that could get me seriously interested, SUVs not being my cup of tea:

If VW can get near that target price I'll be surprised, but equally very interested if they do.

Yes Ford charge a fortune for that 'Mean Green' 🤣

Eric. If you're looking for a smallish Fiestaish size EV then consider the MG4. It's the only one I'd personally consider if I was in a position to afford everything associated with having one. They look absolutely superb and the latest 400bhp one geeeez yum yum.

I started this thread 10 years ago to gain support for a then petition against the government 10 year deadline to ban sale of new petrol/diesel cars. The result of the petition is quite interesting, showing the amount of apathy at the time, and mis - understanding of what a significant change was proposed.

I'm guessing if it was re run now, the result may be a bit different...

Even if they scrap the sale  of NEW ICE cars in 2030, we will still see them on the road until beyond 2048 as can be seen by Stephen driving an 18 year old car today. The vast majority of people buy second-hand / used cars, and there is no threat to ban the sale of those.

The bigger issue with the delay is it will inevitably delay the new infrastructure need and it will then cost even more to implement. Remember net zero by 2050 it not a target it's a legal binding commitment, we don't have a choice.

As for costs to buy new and going of the current websites

MG4 EV from £26,995

Ford Puma from £24,940

Ford Focus from £28,490

Indeed you are correct, I remember a recent stat from AutoTrader that 83% of all car sales are 'used'. One of my (many) objections is government telling me what I could potentially buy. It should be MY decision whether to buy petrol/diesel/hybrid or even EV. Not some government official.

Again, absolutely correct, a decision made by one of our worst PMs, Theresa May, who also made a right *****-up of our Brexit deal, she makes Liz Trust look inspirational!

of our Brexit deal,

What Brexit deal, I thought NI was still in the European union 🤣

Personally I don't think it will matter for very much longer. The EU looks close to imploding as more and more of the liberal policies bring it closer to collapse. If only Emperor Blair was in charge, then there would be harmony in the United States of Europe and peace across the world.  🤣

Yes, impressive performance and vfm, not keen on the looks myself but that's just personal taste. Only snag is I have no wish to give my business to its producers.

+1 on that point!

The Chinese government is not doing anything to "go green". They will be allowed to pollute the air and waters as they have for the past fifty years. Instead of selling the world cheap electronics and such, they will be the source for solar panels and EV vehicles and batteries. Still manufactured with poisonous processes.

The Chinese government has never been honest and that is not going to change.

What a refreshing change to see a former Conservative leader talking SENCE 👌👏👍

IDS is a regular guest on the Julia morning show, he also talked much sense during the 'covid' debacle too. He did much detailed work on the most vulnerable in society being critical on 'universal credits' and how they often don't help the most needy. He would have made a very sensible PM.

The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, the Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith, announced the introduction of a Universal Credit.

It was his policy

iPhones are still made in China, whereas Samsung are made in VietNam. Really hard to find anything not, 'made in China'...

Just checked my Motorola and that's made in china, well it would be as the company was bought by Lenovo.

I wonder where all the lithium and cobalt comes from for all the 15 billion mobile phones? 😂

It's easy to slag china off for it's green credentials, and yes it's a massive polluter , but I'm lead to believe that if you go by population it fairs much better than the global north, and by land mass too.

Yes it's still burning huge amounts of fossil fuel, but China's total installed photovoltaic capacity is over 253 GW, accounting for one-third of the world's total installed photovoltaic capacity.

There are plenty of other reason people may wish to avoid products made there, but to do so completely you'd have to make a large sacrifice in the way we consume goods. If those products were made in the west, out pollution would go up, its a complicated and divisive problem.

Unfortunately the UK government is not prepared to invest the billions that the USA and now EU are doing in "greening" industry, we will just be left far and far behind and investment will go elsewhere along with jobs and the economy .
