Energy chat, the future of car propulsion

A certain petition will probably have gained a few extra signatures in Luton and Sunderland, then!

Not seen much about HVO diesel for a while.

However, amongst the furore over ZEV mandates, etc, I spotted that Stellantis have now approved this for use in their present range and many of their earlier diesels.

Also spotted that BP and Esso are starting a limited roll out of this at forecourts.

Interestingly there was a petition on this a few years back which was rejected "because the Government is not directly responsible". Funny that, when you might think they're not directly responsible for how we use other fuels either, yet are happy to interfere:

Rejected petition

Offer HVO carbon net fuel on forecourts

Force fuel companies to offer HVO fossil free diesel on forecourts.

More details

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise. This is a decision for retailers.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.

It's such a shame that developments like 'vegetable oil' which has such a green agenda got a total misunderstanding from government who let Greta persuade them otherwise.

But ever since Milliband in the 90s persuaded everyone that standard diesel was the fuel of the future, awful that no one learned that 'government' are the worst agent for predicting car development. Basically, stop interfering and let the market decide, they'd do quite well if you left them alone...

Greta Thunberg is a tool of the elite Left. If she were actually so brilliant she would have stayed in school. In America we have given her type of finger wagging and attempting to publicly shame people who she doesn’t agree with as a “Karen”.  When a Karen starts her bleating on about this or that person or issue it’s appropriate to say “shut up Karen”. That usually elicits laughter from the crowd in the immediate vicinity.

Is Kamala a Karen? 🤣

Most definitely! YouTube has many videos of her standing at a podium and scolding the people about something. My personal favorite is the one where she angrily scolded everyone who dared to say “Merry Christmas “. So, yeah. She is a Karen.

In other news, The U.S. CEO of Stellantis has resigned! Something about disagreement with the business strategy. The next guy will be the one who gets to drag the company out behind the barn and thump it in the head with a shovel.

Yes, Carlos Tavares was the CEO of Stellantis, not just the US, though reports here suggest the situation of the US arm has brought it about. Unsold stocks of vehicles customers don't want to buy, etc, as you've commented previously.

The "surplus wind" problem has been known for years, but the more turbines you build, the worse it gets unless you put in place methods of storing/using the surpluses (pumped storage, battery storage, hydrogen production, etc.)

There are however plans afoot for large battery storage facilities in North Yorkshire, but the sites proposed (farmland) have, unsurprisingly, met with some opposition, both from a visual and more seriously a food security perspective.

 https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/environment/north-yorkshire-farmland-at-centre-of-ps10bn-battery-energy-storage-scheme-4888652

There are plenty of brownfield sites around Yorkshire and the North East (e.g. former Redcar steelworks or the site of the planned British Volt battery factory at Blyth, which has collapsed into administration, not to mention various former collieries and coal power stations).

No surplus today, though. From my house, now the trees have shed their leaves, I have a distant view of the nearest windfarm. Not a blade is stirring at present, and the Energy Dashboard site shows that at the moment we are importing more electricity (12.4%) than we are producing from wind (10.8%). Meanwhile gas is providing 54.5%.

Alot of nuclear is offline at the moment for maintenance/ refueling.

For the week it's importing 11.7% exporting 1.1%( Ireland) and wind 36.2%

You truly gotta laugh. It's reported today that government is going to carry out a 'consultation' on how to implement the ban on ICE cars!!

Government introduced this outrageous planned ban 4 years ago, and they didn't even think that they may need policies to ensure the smooth transition from tossing petrol/diesel cars in the bin, and the compulsory production of battery cars!

Proof, if indeed any were needed, that government is inherently incompetent, and shouldn't be let near important decisions that will effect every single citizen in the land. (not just drivers)

Looking at that articke, there seems to be a lot of "doublethink" going on. Do they get their script from George Orwell?

However, firms have also announced thousands of job cuts, partly because of EV targets.

Today's measures will help us capitalise on the clean energy transition to support thousands of jobs, make the UK a clean energy superpower, and rebuild Britain," Alexander said.

and there we have it. The 1000s of jobs that are supported will be based in China, and India. Why has government got this ludicrous obsession of being a 'clean energy superpower'?? I couldn't care less if we used some 'dirty' power, as long as people maintained their jobs, and the economy grew.

Thankfully, in the last few months there has definitely been a change in the public mood on the validity of 'net zero'. No one voted for it, and folk can now see the absolute horrendous cost involved with Milliband bleating on how about how wonderful things will be.

Even his atrocious promise that his policies will save us £300 on annual energy bills, that's nothing over 10 years! If ever a government minister could be accused of 'the emperors new clothes', it's him...

That BBC story (which is widely repeated across the media) also highlights another point. Even after all this time, they still can't decide what constitutes a hybrid permitted to be sold from 2030 to 2035:

The government's eight-week consultation aims to gather views on which cars can be sold alongside zero emission vehicles from 2030, including full hybrids and plug-in hybrids, as well as the strategy for vans and the policy for small volume manufacturers.

If the factory that produces an electric vehicle is powered by coal fueled power plants, then it could be argued that those vehicles are not zero emissions and carbon neutral. The British people need to stand up to their government and stop this nonsense. The government and the elites are going to become even richer while the people will be poorer. Anyone who can’t read the tea leaves over the past twenty five years as this fallacy has been rolled out deserves to be a pedestrian. Or worse yet, a passenger on one of those China built electric buses.

There's the nub of the discussion, I think. Do we want clean air and a healthy environment (for us and our grandchildren)or do we want more material 'stuff'??

We're paying more for our electricity because our fossil fuelled power stations had to install flue gas desulphurisation so that we didn't export acid rain to northern Europe. Was that the right thing to do?

Modern manufacturing processes are so much cleaner than the old industrial models that it’s literally night and day different. The argument that we have to choose between “one or the other “or “all or nothing” is a trope of groups of a certain mindset.

i had a eureka business idea this morning driving down the road, mobile EV charging stations! you can't walk to a petrol station with a fuel can for an EV 🤩 should have known it was already a thing 🤐😄

https://www.rac.co.uk/innovation/ev-boost

when we're all driving electric though you might just see NorthernSky mobile charging units 😉
