Energy chat, the future of car propulsion

The government boasted yesterday that Britain has a network of 25,000 charging points, which sounds quite a lot until you realise that according to the CMA Britain actually needs 250,000 points in the long-term – at a cost of untold billions. It will also require a fundamental re-organising of the electricity grid by the time of the 2030 combustion engine ban. Our green government’s ministers will, of course, be leading the way…

Alok Sharma, who is the President of the upcoming COP26 summit, drives a diesel car, his spokesperson Allegra Stratton drives a diesel, most of the government’s chauffeur-driven Jaguars are diesel too. In fact, the only cabinet minister Guido has identified as owning an electric car is the Tesla-driving Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps. The rest of the government’s ministers are hardly leading by example…

In 2019, the Department for Transport claimed that one-in-four government vehicles would be pure-electric by 2022. Better get a move on…

Do you mean the blood curdling screams as folk get run over trying to cross the road and being hit by a vehicle with no sound? 🤣

I can't hear anything over all of these damn ICE cars passing...

No, the screams of your wives and girlfriends who have to charge at the nearest charging point 500 yards from their homes and have to walk (run) that distance, in the dark, in the hope they make it inside before some low-life sees them as an easy target and attacks.

keep guessing what noise polution im refering too.

That'll be the politicians bleating on how bl**dy great battery cars are, and the 'green' party having noisy wet dreams over them??

its noise pollution from the cooling fans going constantly when charging the battery. when  charging the battery neads to be kept cool. tesla apparently is a noisey one at 80 decibels , others slightly less so. can you imagine that noise outside your house multiplied by the millions of elec cars in the years to come. esp if you live where on street parking is the norm . some person parks outside your house and leaves there car to charge for 8+hrs.

Wouldn't worry about it - the local hoodlums will simply vandalise the charging points, so, no noise! Can you imagine the fun they'll have sticking a bent wire coat hanger into the charger and watching it light up! It'll be 'phone boxes' in the 70s all over again LOL

Apparently you have the option to increase your vehicle's cooling fan operation and volume by manually adjusting your vehicle's charge rate through the FordPass App if you don't like your neighbours.

That's an interesting one Ian. So some of the electricity you're trying to get into your battery actually gets "wasted" in effect by running the cooling fans while you're doing so.

Talking of noise, we now seem to have quite a few EVs where I live and I've noticed no difference in noise levels as they drive by, compared to most ICE cars. Most noise now (apart from d****heads who've fitted a drainpipe to their Corsa, etc) is road noise so there's no difference. If anything, with their increased weight and accordingly large tyres, some EVs seem even noisier.

I've noticed this too.  Small modern petrols make about the same amount of noise as EVs pulling away from a junction...then as the motor noise eases off the road noise takes over instead.  They're only silent when stationary...same as ICE vehicles with stop start...

Yes, but we know how rare a working ICE stop/start car is LOL

Let's not start that one!

Or even stop it 😀

I am pleased to report that my stop/start has worked twice in the last 3 weeks. Both times it was on my driveway just before I was going to switch it off anyway. 🙄

You're certainly right about that, Ian. Walking through a car park this morning I heard what sounded like a giant vacuum cleaner. Sure enough, followed the sound to a charging point and there was a Model 3!

Interestingly, it wasn't a Tesla supercharger, just a normal one, and one of those that needed an app to pay.

Just across the road was a Booths supermarket with a row of four 50kw chargers, with payment by contactless, all cables present and correct, and very clear instructions, like these:

If they really want to encourage take up the Government need to ensure they all attain that standard.

You only have to watch some Formula E racing! With the sound off, it looks quite an exciting race, put the volume up and it sounds like a herd of Dysons, just horrible!

I have to hear that noise all day X 4 or 6 plugged in at a time. Quite annoying after a while. Imagine the whole country at night humming away street by street.

Interesting to see that solid state batteries are in the news again this week, eg:

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/aug/19/uk-consortium-solid-state-batteries-electric-cars-prototype

Quite an interesting article here on benefits of solid state batteries:

https://lithium-news.com/2021/06/14/how-solid-state-battery-technology-will-change-the-world/

If the claimed advantages prove achievable we could be looking at charging within 10 minutes for ranges of 300 miles plus, which is the kind of thing which might persuade people out of ICE.

The snag, however, is like so many things, solid state seems to be up to 10 years away from becoming the norm, although the second article above suggests that Toyota are looking at it already. Doesn't make clear whether that's for pure EVs or hybrids, though.

Other intresting news is that the single largest know Lithium deposit in the world just happens to be in Afganistan !!

Then to just put the icing on the cake sort of speak, the Chinese goverment are already in talks with the Taliban over mineral rights, which looks like going ahead.

On the plus side, the US withdrawl from Afganistan may just have set the future of lithium battery powered cars back another twenty years.

Think I will hang on to my diesel for the next decade at least.
