The company I used to work for always had a problems with diesel being stolen from vehicles parked in the yard over night, I suspect with the rise in fuel costs recently  it's even more of an issue now.

At the end of the day if something has value, someone will try and steal it.

But joking apart, if someone just wants the cable for the scrap value, heavily insulated cutters are readily available online from tool specialists plus the usual marketplaces. If they want to sell the cable intact though, I guess they'd need to be a bit more clever.

There are a fair number of EVs left plugged in overnight around where I live, so I guess someone could make a couple of grand in a night just on the scrap value.

Have any of you tried scrapping stuff in the last decade?  You have to give loads of details and have any money paid into a bank account now.

Stealing the cable intact to sell privately would be the way to go ideally.

Well, they've made things a lot harder for honest folks, but obviously criminals can find buyers, given that the electricity distribution companies and Network Rail are still plagued by cable thefts.

Disposal of (legitimate) scrap used to fall under my responsibilities for a short time, and you were never quite sure about scrap dealers, even large operations that seemed pretty straight on the surface. One or two I encountered certainly seemed downright sinister (we used to refer to one as "the Godfather") and I was glad to pass that particular buck on to someone else at the earliest opportunity!

Brand new cables would need to be programmed to your car at the dealership, point of purchase (think Halfords) AA, RAC or authorised garages

Actually in my whole working life in electronics I've never tried this .

Another one in the "I hadn't thought of that" category. Wind turbine blades (normally made from glass fibre/composite materials) apparently have a service life of 20-25 years and it seems they are proving difficult to recycle, many ending up in landfill, though research is ongoing into a sustainable recycling method.

In other news, just reading that a Which? survey has found that EVs are proving more likely to develop a fault than ICE.

 "Motoring groups" dispute the findings. The RAC spokesperson said they are mostly software faults which can be resolved easily by updates or restarts like your home computer. So that's all right then!😀

Sounds a bit like a documentary I watched a while back about the new high tech F-35 Lightning jet fighter. Basically it wouldn't start up and they had to turn everything off and back on a couple of times to reboot it. I laughed at the time but given what's going on at the moment it doesn't seem quite so funny!

I also heard that on the news this morning, I actually laughed out loud! 🤣 Of course, when we're in blackouts due to no electrical power, those sensible ones with a proper ICE car can just get in and start it right up...

Fair point, the price of all energy in the last few weeks has sky rocketed. My recent electric bill rose 60% over last with a KwH now 22p. Also my heating oil (nearly all houses in NI are on oil as gas infrastructure was never installed during 'the troubles') is now 80p/liter, so to full up my 1400 liter tank is a considerable £1120 which will last about 6 to 8 weeks. (though now I just wear a coat/scarf in the house and only turn it on when temp drops to 15c inside house)

22p per kWh sounds reasonable tbh.  Mines going to be that on the cheap rate from April, 34p on day rate!!  :o. I'm not allowed to change supplier anyway but have wondered how that compares to others?

Maybe we're a bit soft nowadays. I remember as a kid, ice on the inside of my bedroom window in winter was a common occurence, and my Mum telling me to make sure I was wearing a thick jumper and coat if I wanted to play in there.😀
