Nut size without nut cover

Featured Replies

Hi all. I'm running a 57 plate zetec. Some of the nut covers have fell off of my wheel nuts so the supplied wheel brace won't remove them. Does anyone know what size it drops down to without the covers? Cheers

Try Demon Tweeks - search "TPI SD Tuner Style Wheel Nuts & Lockers - Closed End Type"

No stock in for 10 days though, but they are good quality have a set on my Focus.

Without the metal cover they become what they were originally --  7/16 BSW

Ok. So I've looked on eBay for a 18mm wheel brace, but theyre all 17,19,21 mm 🤔 how do I get round it

Breaker bar and a socket, or just a breaker bar if you have a socket set (with 18mm socket).

With out the cap on the nuts are NOT metric they are British Standard Whitworth

No. Those are plastic covers to fit over a 19mm nut.

Ok. Can you get the wheel nut caps anywhere? If not I'll have to go the breaker bar/socket route. Cheers

I think you've got confused here. A 7/16 socket is smaller than 12mm, there's no way the head is that small without the cap. The threads themselves are M12, and the thread wouldn't magically change when the cap falls off. Not sure where you've got this Whitworth thing from.

The actual socket you need is an 18mm. The cap is hardened, where as the 18mm nut underneath is very soft in comparison. You have to be careful you don't slip and round that nut off as it's very easy to do.

The caps aren't meant to be separate so no.  You can buy brand new nuts with caps on them from various shops.  Just make sure you get the old style ones like this, not the newer global nuts with the extra lump on top.

Hi @Luke4efc , a 7/16 AF socket is indeed smaller than 12mm, but that is why I said that it is British Standard Whitworth. Hence 7/16 BSW which is 18.03mm

Would you happen to know the thickness of these wheel nuts? Or does it even make a difference when looking for replacements?

I’ve run my reg and they’ve come with various thicknesses of these wheel nuts as compatible.

I know so far they’re a

Inner thread - M12 x 1.5

Outer diameter - 28mm

Spanner Size - 19

Thickness - ?? 27.5mm / 31mm

The actual height of the 'nut' part is not of importance.

Just make sure that the wheel nuts you buy are for the correct type of wheel. Nuts for steel wheels are not the same as nuts for alloy wheels.

There are the wheels I’ve got

205-55 16R …I believe from memory

The nuts I have are the middle one, 18mm or 19 with the nut cover.

Do you know the year of the vehicle that they were originally from ?

All I know is the motor is 2009 and the wheels were onit when I bought it a few years back now.

I would have left these be but they’ve totally seized up on the drivers side. I will crack them with a bar eventually, but just thinking to get some new ones in possibly. Didn’t realise the extent of variations for getting the correct wheel nuts.

The wheels look like they are from a newer model, so are probably using the Ford 'Global' nuts. See the picture above - Bottom row.

Just to clarify, are these the ones you’re talking about

They should be OK for your wheels 👍

Those wheels are 17" and from a Mk2 C-Max (2010-2015).

If yours are 16" and originally from a 2009 Focus Titanium then they should be these ones.

Yes they are the correct ones. Will these nuts be ok? Solid one pieces nuts?

I can’t be dealing with the headache of the original seized lug nuts again
