Obviously you don't have to buy from OPIE - you may prefer your local Ford dealer or (say) carparts4less once you know the correct oil that you want.  I often buy from Pipercross (Ebay) as they have great prices for the same oils.  Whatever works for you.

No affiliation with any of the above, but I've used them all, and OPIE are excellent to talk to if you have any doubts. They sell via Ebay as well.

Good luck!

I don't know if Ford dealers still sell oil in 5 Litre containers, but if they do and it is in a Ford branded container then it will be Castrol oil.

Given the sensitive nature of the engine the only oil I would be putting in it is the 'Exact' Ford specification Castrol oil.

Check the sticker under the bonnet for details of the oil, or check your owners hand book. It is probably 5W-20 to Ford spec. WSS-M2C948-B but please DO NOT take my word for it, check the specification for yourself.

Also very important: NEVER use any flushing oil or any oil treatment/additive in an Ecoboost engine.

It does NOT matter what brand of oil you choose/mechanic use,as long as it meets OR exceeds Ford specs.(fact).I have Penrite in mine(Australian) they have been around for years here, they meet & actually exceed the specs.

Not necessarily, dealers buy in bulk,it can be any brand. All comes down to the best price for them.I know of quite a few Ford dealers who do not use Castrol oil.

Not in the UK. The stuff they sold to the public used to be called Ford Formula F and it was made by Castrol.

All marketing. As I alluded to,don’t be ‘sucked’ in that you have to use a certain brand.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I can see that there are strong opinions on what make/type of oil should be used, but surely this is only one part of the servicing. Don't we need to get other items such as spark plugs, oil/air filters or anything else? Or are these not needed?

Sure.... but when was it last serviced?  I'm always one for an oil+filter change when I buy a car, as oil condition in every car is critical, and you never really know when it was last changed, and how it's been treated since.

But plugs and air filter are not *critical* and may have been done recently.

If you know they haven't, and they need doing by time/mileage, then any of the websites I mentioned will have the correct fitment parts.

The only thing I'd source differently is spark-plugs. Once you know the correct plug, by looking on those websites or searching on here, I'd look again at specialists, or just on ebay.

I'd recommend Mahle oil-filters, as Mahle are specialists in filtration, air-filter too, and they are OEM on Porsche/MB/BMW/everyone really.

....and oil always causes strong opinions on every car forum 😂

Recently serviced my daughters Ecosport 1.5 and bought the oil on line from Arnold Clark Ford dealers.

‘Strong opinions’?No,not really as long as you go by any vehicle manufacturers specs on oil you will be fine.Brand is really irrelevant. As far as Castrol is concerned it is owned by BP.BMW awarded BP the contract to supply Castrol oils, but it does make them the ‘best’,all about what price an auto manufacturer has to pay for the contract @ the best price.Mobil is the #1 brand globally.

Keyless - Thank you.  I'm happy with the solution of a Faraday Pouch.

Just be careful with a Faraday pouch.   I used to use them before I had the Ghost II immobiliser fitted and two of them failed.   Just check occasionally that your car won't unlock if you have the key in the Faraday Pouch.   At night my keys live in a Faraday Box.

I'm not disagreeing with you on branding - most 'brands' are owned by a very small number of producers.  Comma for instance as a brand were owned by Exxon Mobil for many years, but some people turn their noses up at it.

I am happy to use any 'brand', once I've established what's in the bottle.

I am disagreeing with you on the strong opinions - many people, on many car forums get astonishingly aggressive and sanctimonious about oil.  Subaru, BMW, VAG, Porsche you name it.  Some of the oil-threads on Rennlist are legendary.  Chuck older API formulations and ZDDP into the mix, and 'strong opinions' is more like war!

Off-topic slightly - apologies to the OP :)

Worth remembering that just because a brand is owned by the same company, it doesn't mean they make products of equal quality.

A VW Up is considerably different to a VW Arteon...and of course Bentley & Bugatti are also owned by VW!  Different quality products for different price points and different markets.

:) what you say is true.... but not quite an analogy that fits oil manufacture.

Oil has to meet API and ACEA specifications. Oil gets tested by those organisations. None of the western refineries will be selling a substandard oil where those regulations hold - it would be marketing/commercial suicide.  For example, Comma Oil meets or exceeds the specifications written on the side of the bottle. Dunno if they make this Ford-specific one.

If you think (say) Exxon-Mobil have a refinery that makes both a high quality oil, and a low quality oil but lies about the specifications, I think you may be advised to do some research :)

That's NOT to say that some oils don't perform better than others, or take longer to break down yadda yadda yadda, but then we'll be into a real oil-discussion/fight 😄
