Ford Fiesta 1.0T Ecoboost Titanium X 2013 questions (Newbie)

I have now inflated/deflated the air as per recommendation (33 front / 26 rear).  I'm going to be honest, but sadly this hasn't made much of a difference.  I get the feeling that it's either the way ford fiestas are or something maybe broke, such as suspensions, shockers or bushes....MOT is due in a few weeks, so I'll get this checked out at the earliest opportunity.

@Neb_engineer I know you kindly provided a written description of how to install a camera, but I'm really struggling to understand it.  Don't forget that I want to install front and rear, so can you point me to any step-by-step video showing this?

Thanks.

I'm not sure that's correct, larger wheels are part of the X package.  Isn't that 16 the standard Titanium wheel in 2013?

My memory is failing me now,

Lol, wait until you get even older!😀

Anyway, if my memory is right Mk 7.5 Titaniums came with 16", the X still had 16s but of a different design. The 17s were a popular option on Titanium/X/Zetec S. My neighbour had them on her Mk 7.5 Titanium X but is now on her second Mk 8 Active so maybe they did firm up the ride!

Can't remember who originally posted this early Mk 7.5 brochure showing wheel options, though:

Hi

Yes you are right about wheel design and sizes. Mine has the 17" wheel but I don't find the ride firm tbh.

p.s wheels designs on the attachment are on page 24

Yes, I have 17s on my ST-Line and don't have a problem either, even with the sports suspension, but as @TomsFocus said much earlier in the thread, ride is very subjective and down to personal preference (and/or medical circumstances, of course).

PS just spotted that you'd posted the price list pdf earlier - we've got the full set (price list + brochure) there now for early Mk 7.5!😀

Morning all.

Just visited my local garage to get the issues checked out.  Just to reiterate, the issues are:

  • Clunking/Rattling noise when taking a left turn.  Sound location is difficult to gauge, but seems to be on the right.
  • Very rough when going over a bit of a pothole or a street bump.

The garage have advised the following issues:

  • Offside wishbone has play
  • Both rear axle bushes have deteriorated

Cost to replace these is approx. £220 (excluding parts).

Can anyone recommend where I can get the above parts from?  I want to avoid cheap parts and aim to get quality parts that should last longer.

BTW, could the issues found by the garage be the cause of what I've been describing?

Thanks.

Your local Ford main dealer parts department will supply genuine OEM parts, just make sure to take a big credit card !!

Thanks unofix - Why a big credit card?  Can you recommend anywhere else?  Also do the problems detected by the garage sound like the cause of the issues I've mentioned previously?

If you want genuine Ford original parts then they will be expensive.

To be honest on a 2013 car I'd just use after market parts from the likes of Euro Car Parts. They will probably last seven or so years.

Are the garage happy for you to supply the parts?  They'll probably just buy from ECP/GSF/Jayar etc anyway.  Avoid Q-Drive parts but any named brand you've heard of should be ok.

And yes, a loose/worn wishbone will cause a knock/rattle from the front over rough surfaces and potholes.  Rear bushes tend to be creaky from the back, with a loose feeling on corners.

Cheers @unofix and @TomsFocus for the advise.

The garage can get the parts, but they'll most likely go for cheap stuff and charge me for premium parts, hence I'd rather buy them myself.

So I've contacted GSFParts and they've said:

  • Lemforder wishbone (Offside Front) - £71.54 inc vat
  • Delphi rear-axle mount bushes (pair) £40 inc vat

Not sure how true this is, but the garage said that it's common for the rear-axle mount bushes to go, hence they recommended only genuine ford bushes and not any other make.  So should I go with Delphi bushes or pay a little extra and go with genuine Ford bushes?

It is a common fault.  But surely that means the Ford bushes are also rubbish or they wouldn't fail so often!

I guess it depends how much extra the Ford ones cost.

They will be as good as the Ford bushes. Just use these.

I don't think it's been mentioned so far but it you're planning on keeping the car long term you'll be due a timing belt change next year at 10 years (unless it's already been done, which is probably unlikely). That will max out the credit card, unfortunately.

do you think it will live that long ?

@TomsFocus I hope you're not implying that ford are rubbish...are you? 😟

@unofix @Eric Bloodaxe Not sure about the timing belt, but you guys are getting me very worried now.  Have we made the wrong choice in buying this vehicle because it's not reliable or costs a lot to maintain?

Just been reading a forum on HonestJohn website (link below)

https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/147404/ford-fiesta-ecoboost

The timing belt interval is either 10 years or 150k whichever is first. Also costs about £1100 at a Ford dealer due to it taking between 10-12 hours and using expensive tools.

If you don't want to pay this you could run the risk of the engine blowing and fit a good, used replacement engine for about £1500.

Hope this helps

A used engine can indeed be bought for between £1500 - £1800. Of course the exact condition would in most cases be almost impossible to ascertain without a major strip down and inspection. It would of course be a wise move to replace the wet belts before installing the replacement engine (about £700). Then using a small independent garage could see the engine installed for about £800. I would expect that the cost would still run to over £3000.

Not necessarily, but you do need to bear in mind this is a nine year old car. When I started driving that would be one step from the scrapyard mainly due to rust (my first two Fords - Cortina Mk 1 and Escort Mk 1 - needed an annual visit to the friendly local welder to get through the MOT😀) but that is usually no longer the case.

However it is inevitable that items such as brakes, exhaust, suspension joints, bushes etc will need replacement as the car ages and in that respect I would say Fords are no worse than other makes and traditionally have been cheaper to repair. Depending on when you buy a car you can be lucky in that such things have just been done or vice versa.

With regard to the cambelt issue, most makes need replacement at 4-5 year intervals at a typical dealer cost (including water pump) of around £450, so over say, a 10-12 year ownership the 1.0 ecoboost would be comparable, it's just that it comes in one big hit at 10 years. An awful lot of 1.0 ecoboosts will be reaching the cambelt replacement date in the next year or so.

If I was buying an older car I would expect the price to reflect work needing to be done in the short term. Obviously we don't know what you paid or how long you intended to keep the vehicle.

Ford in general, or just the bushes?  There are definitely plenty of rubbish parts on Ford vehicles, mainly due to cost cutting!  Rubber is one area where Ford really do seem to skimp compared to some rivals...engine mounts are a good example of that!  And rear bushes have been common on the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo for as long as I can remember.  That certainly suggests that there's either a design flaw or material issue there...  And considering the major differences in suspension design between the Fiesta and the larger models, that does suggest it's the latter!

Lemforder are usually a good quality.  Remember that Ford don't make rubber bushes - they just rebrand someone else's.

I'd look on 'carparts4less' for the exact same or equivalent parts - this is the same company as EuroCarParts but sell them even cheaper... strange business model but it seems to work for them.

I'm afraid Ford will be nowhere near as reliable as Nissan nor as cheap to maintain.

For the 220 GBP have the garage said how many hours labour that is?  Seems a bit high?  I haven't done it on a Ford so their quote may be fine.

...and you said your issues were

  • Clunking/Rattling noise when taking a left turn.  Sound location is difficult to gauge, but seems to be on the right.
  • Very rough when going over a bit of a pothole or a street bump

...be aware that the work above may make no difference to your issues.... didn't you say the previous MOT advisory was 'nearside'?

When did you say you were due the next MOT?  I would put it through the MOT first, as then you may get an alternate diagnosis.

...and I don't know what wheel-sizes you are used to, but the 17s on the Fiesta mean that the tyres have a very narrow tyrewall (to maintain the correct overall diameter) and it's not going to cope well with potholes/bumps/tiny-stones/feather.

Thanks everyone.  I really appreciate your advise and suggestions.

@statts @unofix @Eric Bloodaxe - Being honest, I'd rather not think about it at this very moment.  I want to see how it drives for at least a few months to ensure that it runs okay and we're not going to have a car that is a money cesspit.  We don't do a lot of mileage (approx. 3-5k per year).  If all is well in 6 months time, then yes, I will replace the timing belt and any other relevant parts.

@TomsFocus @orangecurry - I have some good news.  I got another mechanic to have a look at it and he said the other guy is ripping me off as the rear-axle mount bushes are fine...only very little wear/tear.  He's charged me £30 labour for changing the wishbone.  I've tested the car and it's made a world of difference and all the noise has also gone.  I'm going to ditch the scammer and will be leaving him a bad review.

So now that's resolved, my next plan is to get the service done.  Does anyone know what parts need changing and how much/what type oil this model takes?  I assume it's worth purchasing all service parts from Carparts4less?  I usually purchase my car parts from https://www.gsfcarparts.com/

Great news - your 2nd mechanic sounds like a good 'un.

For sourcing parts, just look at all of the above three websites - depending what discounts are running, any can be cheapest.

I don't have that model of engine myself, but I understand oil choice for it is critical.

With a 'new' car I always look for as much info as I can, and in this case finding oil through 'Ford' as they have a partnership with Castrol is the easy choice, but I would include checking what OPIE have listed, as they are oil specialists, have a very good website look-up, and also welcome phonecalls with the person answering knowing 'oil'.

This may be the ones..

https://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-2125-ford-wss-m2c948-b-engine-oil.aspx

Given the sensitive nature of the engine the only oil I would be putting in it is the 'Exact' Ford specification Castrol oil.

Check the sticker under the bonnet for details of the oil, or check your owners hand book. It is probably 5W-20 to Ford spec. WSS-M2C948-B but please DO NOT take my word for it, check the specification for yourself.

Also very important: NEVER use any flushing oil or any oil treatment/additive in an Ecoboost engine.

If you don't have an owners manual you can access the electronic version here, might answer a few questions:

Thanks guys for the links and info.

The opieoils website has correctly detected my vehicle because I have compared the VIN plate number it has found.  The title states "Ford WSS-M2C948-B Engine Oil" and below are the oils it's recommended:
