Ford Focus ST '22 Battery Drain!

Featured Replies

It's not like it's a hard to miss colour!

The ST has an e-brake that applies automatically normally (as I'm sure you know) Although I do always check it's on.

  • Not having much luck am I?! Hire Van pulled over to park and got a little too close. Logged it with Enterprise, and now the fun begins.

  • Don't be disappointed, 12.6V is the correct level that you should expect. The cars Smart charging system will aim to keep the charge level at 80% unless the SOC has been otherwise adjusted. The batter

  • 14.8 is the charging voltage. A brand new 100% charged 12V battery would never actually read over 12.7-12.8V once it’s settled. 12.6 is absolutely fine. I’d only worry if it dropped below 12.

I thought this but it doesn't apply automatically - the car bings at you after turning the engine off, but if you ignore it the car rolls.

I've done some digging to see if you can turn auto-apply using ForScan but can't see anything - anyone know? I'll apply it to mine and his!

Mine auto applies.

Auto-hold must be turned on. Come to complete stop, switch engine off, unclip seat belt, ebrake auto applies.

I actually think ebrake applies as engine switches off, I only mention seat belt as if you unclip seat belt before switching off the engine it won't apply (same restriction as the auto release)

Hmmmm ok. I will give this a go when I get it back. Thinking about it, I tend to unclip then press the engine button. So maybe that's why It's never auto-applied for me. (the hold button is always on).

Good shout though! I'll try mine then let the guy know too! He only lives 2 mins from my house.

The Mk4 EPB is unreliable.  Mine auto applied for about 90% of the time switching the engine off.  But every few drives it would fail to apply and I'd have to do it manually.

Didn't take much notice of the belt being clipped or unclipped, but I still can't see how it safer to not apply with the belt unclipped!

I agree - I've read online about it failing a lot so always leave mine in gear. My uncle as a 68 plate and his went the other week (plenty of warning on the dash board so least it failed before it rolling into something)

It would just be better to apply all the time once the engine is powered off regardless of seat belt placing etc. Surely it being electric would mean they can do more things with it to ensure its a safer option than the old skool ones?

I will get to enjoy this car at some point, even if it kills me.

Is that colour Magnetic Green ? 🤣

Just pull the door opening catch from the inside whilst the engine is running. It auto applies everytime.

Mine always auto applies, only very rarely has auto-hold somehow got turned off and then it doesn't, but it always applies if I stop in the correct order when auto-hold is on.

I think leaving it in gear might stop it auto applying too.

Once you figure out what works and what doesn't, it seems to be pretty easy to come to a routine where it always auto applies. It is just a computer program if you "tick" the right boxes it will apply.

Guy admitted full fault and admitted to me he forgot to apply his handbrake.

What rotten luck and it just goes to show what I have said on this forum many times and been berated for it, the Electronic Handbrake is not an Automatic Handbrake even though there are some failsafes built in, there are times when it will not apply itself.

A bit like auto lights you should still be checking the system has done it's job, I always have to turn mine on in fog.

And people can equally forget to apply a manual handbrake.

The real problem here isn't the EPB, it's Ford's poor programming.

The auto-hold shouldn't be randomly turning off.

And there shouldn't need to be any specific requirements for auto-EPB other than stationary & ignition off.

Until it works every time without fail and without having to double check, I don't class that as reliable.

I don't know what the Owners Manual for cars equipped with Electronic Brake Boosters say, but for my conventional Servo equipped car the Instructions for the Electronic Handbrake are quite clear, you apply it by pulling the lever.

Members who've read my previous posts on this subject will know that I think EPBs are A Very Bad Idea and until some means is provided to quickly release the EPB to allow the car to be moved when the battery is flat I won't be persuaded otherwise.

Cars will all be auto soon too, so you won't be able to get it in to neutral with a flat battery either.

Well, if I'm still alive and able to drive when I next need to change my car I'll be going EV anyway.

Even if the Government paid me, I still wouldn't buy an Electric car. They once told us to buy Diesel cars. I'll hold on to my car for as long as possible, or until someone else bumps into it.

On a better note, the two new doors have arrived from Germany, and the body shop are making a start today.

They reckon perhaps Wednesday next week but will take that with a pinch of salt.

These are the guys who have repaired it twice now - utterly amazing work can't lie - https://mch999.com

Looking forward to all the legal company ads and cold calls in a few years asking if you were mis-sold your EV.

Just a pity they don't have a branch in Durham 🙄

If anyone knows of a GOOD car body repair shop around the Durham area please send me a message.

Give them a call - they might do a pick up and drop off for not too much money. Tell them Luke recommended them - I'm in their good jobs for leaving them 1 of two google reviews ha

@LukeJQuinnI've been away from the forums for the last couple months and I can't believe what you've been going through mate!fingers crossed everything gets sorted quickly with the latest bump! I cried when I saw the first one and about died when I saw the second! 😩

Glad you're staying positive though! I've clocked just around 2500 miles now and I've loved every single one of them! So far (touch wood) she's been a dream and I've had very few issues! An odd android auto not connecting here or there, and nearly slicing my finger off off when cleaning the exhausts 😅 but all good otherwise!

I'll monitor my hand brake, but I'm pretty sure it auto applies when I've come to a complete stop and turned the engine off. I sometimes park on a slight incline at work and it's yet to roll back! 🤞

  • 2 weeks later...

@LukeJQuinn - just read through the whole thread. What a journey 😂

I've got a mk4.5 ST too and I've been getting similar issues for about a week or so now (not long after I first got the car) whereby I was getting the notifications from the FordPass Pro app that the car was in deep sleep, keyless on passengers side doesn't work and the infotainment switches straight off instead of waiting for the drivers door to open etc. I've done good runs in it and that still doesn't seem to resolve the issue so the car is booked in on Monday with the dealer, now the worrying part is that it's M53 Ford in Ellesmere Port....

I'm going to refer them to this thread and let them know that it looks like it will need a new battery as that seemed to be the root cause of the problem, I'm hoping they've learnt from the mistakes on your case!
