Lights on dash flash while driving

Some may just reflow a few suspect joints in the cluster but the old lead free solder should be removed and replaced with new .

Also not just the plug pins, the end resistors at the end of the can buses have been known to loose contact as well.

I don't know if it's BS but he said to me that he does this like 5 times a week. So if he did all of them wrong then he'd be out of business from dissatisfied customers 🙂

Hopefully with @Jcwutang92doing the same, we will have a more clear picture of the main problem.

Keep in mind that the issue we are having is not the normal focus faulty behavior like every YouTube video shows. It's just /some/ lights that are flashing and not all.

🤣 No, I think it was 'wrong quote' in your post, it was my recommendation! LOL

  • Update! The small long connectors were not plugged in fully! Today I learned that I have to constantly apply force when locking the mechanism. They were locked, but not in the right depth. 🙄 For

Climate control on a Mk2 is super rare over here.  Can't remember the last one I saw with it! Are GEM's easy enough to source in your location?  I'm just thinking you could swap in a spare GEM to

My son’s cluster was the engine malfunction/limp home and the power steering malfunction warning.

The cluster specialist offered checking for £35 or reconditioning for £96 at the time with a lifetime guarantee. Senseless checking because the lead free solder is a time related failure. Usually from 10 years on.
The other common spot is the Gem/BCM Fusebox and may be more likely or the connectors around it .

Back to the dtcs I guess .

The same electrician has repaired it though. He did it in front of my eyes and he has decades of experience. Now the most possible thing to do for him is to swap cluster, suggesting it has more damage than the known one.

How can I check for the leaky GEM though? This I haven't verified. I swapped it with another one (there goes another 100 euro) but it didn't make a difference.

Could this also have anything to do with the ECU plugs by the 12V battery?

Yeah just rang them £60-80 class thanks bud

I also swapped the GEM on my 2005 model. Didn't fix it either.

Hopefully you can find the issue and report back! Turns out our cars have a very similar problem that is super rare as well.

Yeah quite irritating.

Well I will try and test the GEM and clean it maybe see if that works and report back 🙂

So been a while since I posted.

So I am no further on I got talking to a guy in my work and he said check all grounds and then replace the cluster and see how it goes.

I did however find a DTC code on it and the code is U0073 I'm not sure if that's the issue with it.

a quick update with some codes I got with IDS means nothing too me lol

I've been googling and YouTube for weeks now says the same thing resolder the instrument cluster

I got coms issues as well with diagnostics.

For the record, I did take the car to another electrician who found unsoldered contact pads. He supposedly fixed them. The problem is that the car had stopped doing it's thing with the lights anyway, so it hasn't done it for a month + anyway. Don't know if it was the issue or it's just random and it'll come back(that's what I think).

I'd like to think it was done correctly however you could be right and it's soldered incorrectly so yeah I might disassemble the cluster and check myself and then take it from there

Thanks

U1900 and other u codes, still looks like can  bus fault. Cluster or BCM  connections?

Does anyone know the exact cable run between the cluster and the GEM?  If there's a multiplug breaking that run somewhere behind the dash, that would be well worth checking.

Took this last weekend

Cleaned all the grounds and didn't fix this issue lol 😞

I seen another video however that there's a ground on the ECU wires that controls all this PCM stuff it runs into the C49 connection I think so I will get the jack out and try that when I get time.

I don't myself unfortunately but if I find out I will try that

Thanks 👍
