Hello

I started replacing the head gasket. I hope to finish this week. It's my first head gasket so I'm taking the time. But I didn't know if it was damaged, I don't know enough to make a decision

I will come back to give news once restart done with still flushing the cooling circuit

Hi,

I come back for the news of the problem, i have been replaced the head gasket, the motor restarts but the water after the thermostat stay cold despite the motor is hot. I think the calorstat is damaged, perhaps sticked with the mixture oil/water ?

What do you think of my hypothesis ?

Thanks

change the thermostat and carefully feel all pipes and parts of the engine for heat. try a backflush on the cooling system.

Hi Jimpster, thanks for your reply. What do you mean by "try a backflush" ? i don't know how to do it...🫣

Hi @JimpsterI think I misunderstood due to the language. Were you talking about some kind of air purge? If so, I followed Ford's procedure, namely refueling, 2500rpm for 2 minutes, then turning off and topping up.
But once the 2 minutes have passed, the engine is very hot but the 2 hoses that go to the radiators are not. That's why I'm thinking about the calorstat

Where did you find that procedure?  The stat won't open in 2 minutes of fast idle on a diesel.  I had to drive mine 1.6 TDCI over 3 miles to get the stat to open after a coolant change as I couldn't get it hot enough on the driveway.

Do you have an OBD2 gauge to check the coolant temp accurately?  The stat should open at 84c.  If it isn't that hot, the stat won't be open.

Hi @TomsFocus, i found this procedure in ; (french traduction) Automotive Technical Review. In France results on google tape RTA or MTA and in the MTA of this fiesta for the refill of coolant it's the procedure. (3000 rpm 2 minutes, refill, and 3000 rpm 2 minutes)

hello,

You were right. not hot enough for it to open. On the other hand the fan doesn't trip, I see the thermistor hanging down. I can't find a reference for replacement if anyone knows.

change the thermostat and thermistor [sensor] before that undo a few hoses and connect a hose pipe to them and blast the cooling system to clean it, tighten all up refill the cooling system and run to temp with the radiator cap off.

The thermostat is ok, the pipe after the thermostat are hot when cooland is 83°C with ODB scan. But the fan don't turn, i see a thermistor for fan control broken on the fan.

The fan won't come on until around 97c.

That resistor does break quite often though.  I got a few from a scrap yard.  Though you can buy them on eBay etc.

Hi,

I drove 20 kilometers to test the car, for the moment no worries. Could you tell me I couldn't find the colors of the cables that go on the fan motor? thank you in advance

I don't know the cable colours unfortunately.

shouldnt there only be 2 ???????

as i believe you can short it out to constantly run

  • Author

Hi,

Yes there are 2 wires, like on the thermistor and it's the same sockets. I made a mistake, I didn't think to look while disassembling.
