Proposed new laws to decrease road deaths

IMHO, people staying in the middle lane are reducing the traffic capacity of a 3-lane road to that of three single lane roads. One hits the break anywhere and everybody hits the break. Because no one's overtaking anymore. Cruise control just make the thing worse as you're driving barely half a M/h faster than the car on your left and you don't care what's in front of him(/her).

Sorry to continue dragging this off the thread subject but what has happened to Linehan is appalling, extremely worrying. Not just the freedom of speech angle*, which would be bad enough, but this com

  • agreed I do not drink a DROP if I am going to drive; but I would like to see how many accidents are caused by people that have, between say 15 and 35 ug of breath alcohol. I would suspect it

Not sure I agree with that.

Let's just assume that nobody overtakes on the inside. Under those circumstance what you have is a triple carriageway road whose maximum speed in the inside two lanes is that (or less) of the driver in the middle lane. The outer lane is "unrestricted", apart from the speed limit of course.

It seems most people agree with most of us on here that the drink drive limit is about right where it is :

But I will not hold my breath for the government to listen to the people and read the stats from Scotland. No, they'll be more bothered about virtue signalling and "being seen to do something", anything (even if it is a waste of time and effort). Bit like the Covid madness really !

It gives me no pleasure to say it looks like I was right :

Drink-drive limit set to be slashed in England and Wales under new plans to improve road safety

The government will drop the limit because they, as most politicians are these days, are a bunch of authoritarian virtue signalling kill joys : "Look, we care about people so much, every single life, that we are going to drop the drink drive limit (even though the people do not want it and it has been proved it will make no discernible difference)" :

Scotland have already got these lower limits - they make no difference whatsoever...

https://www.ias.org.uk/2021/08/25/none-for-the-road-why-lowering-drink-drive-limits-didnt-lower-road-traffic-collisions/

The UK government has a propensity to follow Scottish legislation in the fear of being seen to be left out. During COVID, Boris followed St Nicola on numerous laws in the hope of being seen to do good. It's pathetic...

I agree with the compulsory eye and cognitive tests, but only if everyone has to have them on a regular basis.

There are plenty of people that are half 70 who would fail and a lot of them look like they passed their driving tests abroad.
