Difference between 1.6 and 1.8 plate?

they are different plates 1.6TDCi and 1.8TDCi

Really going to have to check that plate I've got when I'm back in the UK, I'm not 100% sure it's stainless steel... I think mine might be aluminium :(

careful you don't cut your lip when sinking the teeth in to it 😉

Alternatively use a magnet,

Stainless Steel isint magnetic

Aluminium and Stainless Steel are pretty much identical in appearance (either can be very shiny or very matte).

Three ways to tell for sure-

1, Feel the weight, for comparable mass aluminium will be noticeably lighter.

2. Take a small metal file and shave one edge of the metal, Aluminium will be easy to mark whereas stainless steel will barely mark.

3. Tap the metal with the shank end of a drill bit, aluminium will sound hollow.

There is also a way of testing involving acids but not advisable at home and likely to totally ruin what you intend to test.

Be aware that NOT all stainless steel is magnetic

Ferrous stainless steel IS magnetic

Austenitic stainless steel is NOT magnetic

Aluminium is NOT magnetic

Easy with blanking plates, "if it ain't magnetic, don't use it" lol, that way you'll cover yourself...

I seem to recall it was quite hollowy sort of feeling... But then it was a while ago I got it, so maybe my mind is playing tricks...

Best way to be sure to be sure is buy another one from seller linked on first page of this thread or this guy in uk

Also don't waste money buying a blanking plate with a hole in it as it completely defies logic ! :)

Ha ha ha Lenny ! :)

Round & round in circles - like too many posts on here !

Moral of the story - fix the root cause / source of any problem - not the symptoms !

Just fitted a plate to my 1.4 Fiesta, massive thanks to Lenny the Legend, hopefully no more 'limp home' from choked egr signal. Car certainly feels different It has given an engine warning light though p0238 (Turbo / Super Boost Sensor A Circuit High Input).

Does that make any sense to anyone as to the problem ? I cleared it but it just returns.

Also is there a better air filter I could fit ?

Sorry if I'm on the wrong forum but you guys sound like you know what you're talking about!

Thanks Martyn,

Fit a K&N or Green Cotton induction filter,

Straight swap free flowing item.

never heard of that error before but give it a few weeks to acknowledge blanked is best.

Thanks Lenny,

Sounds like a good plan!

See there other items they stock and supply; Hybrid turbo's which are a straight swap fitment take your 1.4TDCi up to 130Bhp

http://www.nbstyling.co.uk/store/?pID=61

That error would suggest it's either got a leak on the air intake (such as the turbo hose or pipe) or it may need just a new air filter.

I would suggest a boost pressure issue, however fitting the blanking plate should not cause this issue, but it could be a side effect as by blanking the EGRV there's more exhaust gas pressure through the turbo

Thanks guys I'm thinking there was more than one problem in the first place and this is all a learning curve, didn't know the egr valve existed two weeks ago! Now I think I'm chasing the problems it's caused with all the crud getting shoved in the system over the years. I think I'll take a look in the turbo and see what I can find. I did have the injector washers re-placed only a few months ago and wasn't convinced that it was 100% afterwards, that's when limp mode kicked in and flagged the egr valve 'could be up to £400 to replace' said the mechanic, at least he didn't charge for the test.

I'd far rather blank the thing off, fit a new air filter, remap the engine and still have change from that £400 plus enjoy the benefits.

It's not nearly as scarey having joined this forum, thanks again.

Be aware that P0238 is a generic code with several possible root causes

Google P0238 for more info

To eliminate contamination from the oil sump and help things run smoother;

I recommend purchasing 5 litres of cheap oil say Halfords brand for example.

drain existing oil

put cheap oil in,

Followed by a bottle of Xado Total Flush

run engine for 20 minutes,

Then drain the oil

fill up with Castrol brand

engine will run smoother,

Also use Xado Multi Cleaner prior to having fuel filter changed

the stuff really makes a difference.

the active egr circulates a lot of carbon into the oil

It won't after blanking but you need to flush out what is in there caked on the cam shaft and inside turbo.

Carbon in the engine is like cholesterol in the Human body intead of blocking arteries to the heart; it blocks up the oil feed to the turbo.

Here are links to purchase the above items;

Since sterling is very strong compared to euro at present it's 5 pounds cheaper per bottle to purchase from Xado Ireland

Total Flush (for oil)

MultiClean (For Diesel tank)

Hey Lenny

i know they are different plates :) ! was just offering the Blanking Plate for 1.8 to a new home :D..

Got my focus going into Evans Halshaw on Thursday for a FREE Health Check ! LOL and FREE updates for ECR

Then on Friday it goes for Terra clean and blanking !!!! You recommend Attomex as Oil cleaner .... That takes care of Oil side and Fuel side what do you recommend to clean out the air side without taking off and stripping EGR and inlet manifold etc ????

Thanks

Chris

Sorry mate,

I just saw the post and respond to say they were different,

Was in work at time didn't read previous posts to obtain the full story.

I've not used anything for that personally mate and I only recommend items from tried and tested experience and research

So I can't recommend anything for that.

No need to clean the egr if blanking it anyway.

Only parts worth cleaning would be induction hose between filter and turbo aswell as the intercooler pipework and intercooler.

Now there's no point in cleaning them until you fit an oil catch tank

See guide: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/74245-guide-fitting-oil-catch-tank-16tdci-ford-focus-mk2-mk25/

This prevents oil from the crank case from circulating in to the induction chamber and eventually filling up the intercooler reducing it's efficiently and purpose.

Bottom line,

Fit yourself an oil catch tank kit

Then remove and clean pipework once.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys,

Plenty to go on now, should keep me busy for a while, next Thursday before I can start. First off is to replace the temporary blanking plate with the ordered one. I installed it by feel only and I'd like to get the wipers off, rear cover etc. as Lenny explained. I tried the first time but those wiper arms just wouldn't budge so I left them on rather than risk breaking anything. Still I did give them a good soaking in wd40 with the nuts removed. While we're on it, is there any trick to help their removal because I don't have a puller.

I too had similar trouble removing wiper arms,

I too was trying to pull them but yay don't.

Fold upwards like changing blades then rock a little left to right and they just lift off.

Prior to removal; Mark windscreen with pvc tape so you know exactly where to return,

Otherwise they wipe too far.
