Nathan54771
I know it's not the right place to post, but seen a few fiesta members mention getting there new car detailed once received to give it some good base coats etc. Also vaguely remember a member saying he started a detailing bussiness up ? Looking for one in the manchester area so I can get it booked in once I get a proper date for collection in the next week or so. Also any reccomendations on what to have done and how much and if it's actually worth doing, I keep it up with weekly detailing myself every Sunday but no professional polishers etc

nath.mk7.st
I looked at this and in the end after reding loads of posts about people who do it. I decided to make use of my Halfords discount card and do it myself... But looking back I spent about 100 quid on products (even tho I still use them now) and about 7-8 hours doing it. Maybe would of been better taking to a pro but I enjoy doing it and now when I clean it it's real easy. Nathan54771
Yehhh thought of that myself and still might, I have loads of detailing stuff already and enjoy doing it just wanted a good start off professionally, but if it's quite expensive il just get the stuff that I've not got from Halfords etc like you said. P.s that's an awesome shine, looks really good :)
JoeZS19
I guess it depends on price like you said. I think adding any missing items to your current products and doing it yourself would be much more satisfying IMO :)
BigRog
Try Iain Brown at "finerdetails" in Chadderton. http://www.finerdetails.co.uk he's really good.
Nathan54771
Yehhh just looked and it's £150-£300 for a new car detail, so like you said could get stuff like clay bar and lube and a good wax/sealent etc and other bits I don't have. Spend a Saturday on it and learn myself :) Obvs won't be as good but got to learn somehow I suppose. Cheers for the link roger, looks like a good detailer and with the reccomendation I might use it in the future for a detail.
Mental_Atom
I gained a huge addiction recently, spent over £100 on gear and it never gets old! Paramanic
right here a go ....... first newb question..... what is detailing exactly i know its cleaning your car (expensively) but i would like to learn how to do it myself and haven't got a clue what equipment and stuff would i need etc my gf's sisters fiancee best pal does it but always wondered how its done and what you need and .......literally a newb at this but really interested but got to learn somewhere :)
JoeZS19
right here a go ....... first newb question..... what is detailing exactly i know its cleaning your car (expensively) but i would like to learn how to do it myself and haven't got a clue what equipment and stuff would i need etc my gf's sisters fiancee best pal does it but always wondered how its done and what you need and .......literally a newb at this but really interested but got to learn somewhere :) Where to start aha..it's not so much about the cleaning but the whole paint protection, finish etc. Washing: 2 bucket method - one with water and shampoo, one clean water to rinse the wash mit before putting back into the shampoo bucket, don't use a sponge though! A good drying towel is better to use than a chamois leather I've found. Then it's a decision on whether you want to use sealant on the paint, then polish or wax. Sealant on the alloys and trim. You've also got lime pre wash, clay bars, snow foam. There's threads on here about washing and detailing cars, also have a look on the internet at other forums and guides that can give you a good ideas on what to do. Sorry if I'm telling you things you already know :) aha
Mental_Atom
right here a go ....... first newb question..... what is detailing exactly i know its cleaning your car (expensively) but i would like to learn how to do it myself and haven't got a clue what equipment and stuff would i need etc my gf's sisters fiancee best pal does it but always wondered how its done and what you need and .......literally a newb at this but really interested but got to learn somewhere :) Since you always go super in depth when you reply, it's my turn! My process (for a full top-to-bottom details which I plan to do about twice a year, but have done on all my familys cars): 1. Rinse down entire car (including wheels) with pressure washer/hose (I use a hose since I don't have PW). This removes any super loose dirt sitting on the surface to make the next steps a bit easier. 2. Clean the wheels (this stops you getting dirty wheel water all over the car). Firstly, I spray all over with Iron X (it's a fallout remover, removes bonded iron in the paintwork. Also brake dust and things which is why it's good for wheels). Then you leave this to sit for about 5 mins (it turns purple) and then rinse it off thoroughly. I then use a sponge to get into the awkward bits of the wheels that the hose doesnt quite catch. Then I rinse them down again, and they're done! 2. Two bucket wash (part 1). You get two buckets with grit guards in, one for wash one for rinse. In the wash bucket, you want water and your shampoo (a good one is Dodo juice Born to be Mild). In the other you just want water. Then you need a decent wash mitt (NOT a sponge. Like, really!). Charge it in the wash bucket, do some washing (apply medium pressure working from the top down). Once the mitt is dirty, rinse in the rinse bucket, rub on the grit guard at the bottom of the bucket, and then charge and continue until the whole car has been done. 3. Rinse the car down with the hose. A good tip here is to take the end off the hose so it just flows freely. As you put it around the car you'll see the water just sheet off and the car will be almost self drying (but we aren't drying yet). 4. Decontamination time (step 1). I have 2 types of contaminant remover, Tar X and Iron X. Unsuprisingly, Tar X removes tar and bugs and any other icky stuff stuck to your paint/windscreen. Iron X removes iron bonded to the paint. With both of these, you spray them on, wait about 5 mins, and rinse them right off. This removes about 80% of the contamination on your paint (even the bits that you don't see!). 5. Decontamination (step 2). Using a clay bar, clay the car. This is a tough one to explain, this video does it much better: 6. Now, do a two bucket wash again and rinse with the end off the hose again. This time we'll dry! 7. Dry. Get a decent drying towel, and dry the car by laying the towel over the car and patting it dry. This minimizes small scratches from anything left on the paint that avoided the many previous steps. 7.5 (optional). I use an all-in-one paint cleaner to get rid of anything that managed to survive the rest of the steps. I use DoDo need for speed and it also leaves a nice layer of wax as a base, which is awesome. At this point, you have super clean and super shiny paint. Free of contaminants, dirt, and pretty much anything else (including protection!). So now, we protect! 8. And now we wax (or we seal). In general, you want one or the other but not both. I don't have any experience with sealants so I'll focus on wax. There are two kinds of waxes... Hard wax and Soft wax. Soft wax tends to be easier to apply but also a lot easier to over-apply (and with wax, less is always more). Hard wax is slightly trickier to apply and if you put too much on it'll be a right pain to get off, but it's harder to over-apply. The instructions on use vary by the kind of wax, but in most cases you apply it with a wax applicator in small circles (I'll put what I use at the bottom), leave it to haze for about 5-10 mins and then buff it off again. 9. Buff! Get a nice plush buffing cloth or a polishing cloth and polish all the residue off. Now you'll see the true fruits of your labor as it'll be gleaming! 10. Glass - I then polish my glass with Autoglym Glass polish. You literally slap it on a foam pad, put it all over the window, wait for it to buff and take it right off. It's easy and your windows will be gleaming! Also you'll notice much improved visibility in rain. 11 (optional). Interior - I use an interior APC (again I'll link below) and spray over all the surfaces and then take it right back off again with microfibre cloths. Leaves everything clean but kinda boring looking. 12 (also optional) Interior dressing - I use Poorboys natural look dressing. As with almost everything else, you put it on and take it right off and it gives all the surfaces a nice look (basically "natural" as in how they would look when they are new). Can be used on most everything - Plastic, leather, Vinyl, Rubber etc. 13. I collpase in a corner after spending 5-6 hours cleaning my car! Products I use: IronX (for the wheels): http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=726 (it does stink though!) Buckets with grit guard: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=393 DoDo Born to be Mild Shampoo: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=490 Wash Mitt: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/washing-and-drying/meguiars-lambswool-wash-mitt/prod_282.html TarX (for the bugs n stuff): http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=925 The clay I use (it uses water for a lube so it's easy): http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/detailing-clay/detailing-clay-bars/bilt-hamber-auto-clay-medium-200g-/prod_1163.html Drying Towel: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=634 DoDo Need for speed: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=501 My wax of choice (not so easy to apply, but lasts for ages): http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=281 Buffing towel (polishing technically, but they do a great job): http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=85 Glass polish: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=748 Interior all purpose cleaner: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=1346 Interior Dressing: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=328 Other useful things: Spray bottle (e.g. for putting water in as clay lube): http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/accessories/600ml-plastic-bottle-with-sprayer/prod_178.html Wax applicator: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=977 General microfibre cloths (you'll need a few, the CYC own ones are cheap - the blue, pink, white): http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/microfibre-cloths/cat_5.html General foam applicator (good for things like the dressing): http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=89 And finally... I'm not trying to advertice CleanYourCar honest, it's just where I get my stuff from and it's so much easier to link all from one place! Open for questions :D
JoeZS19
I agree with you Mental_Atom! Gave a bit more detail then I did aha. 5-6hours though!? No wonder you said it gets dark at night now ;) Clean your car is an awesome site though, i see the drying towel is out of stock, think I must of ordered the last one earlier haha. The initial cost of everything may seem high but most of the stuff lasts ages and keeps your new car looking nice! Dodo juice hard candy wax is another product I would recommend and a single application lasts 2-3 months which isn't bad. Just read reviews, take the plunge and experiment until you find your ideal set up :) Enjoy!
