Dropping Rear Door Windows

Featured Replies

About every 200- 300 miles our rear door windows drop by about 15 mm, to begin with they stay up for some time but then drop quickly once on the move. We have always had four door cars and have had windows creep down by small amounts from time to time, but not quite as quickly or with a gap large enough to get your fingers in. Has anyone else had this problem? Luckily it is noticeable by the air noise once they have started to move, so I try not to leave the car parked with them down.

Honestly, no. I haven't had this problem at all. Mine stay rock solid no matter how far. Probably haven't rolled mine down in 5k miles and they haven't moved at all. Are they electric or manual windows?

They are manual, at first I thought they hadn't been closed properly, shortly after that when giving the car a wash, I managed to run water down the inside of the glass. They move down to be noticeable within a day of each other, when closing them there is a distinct resistance as the glass goes up into the top weather shield so they aren't loose. My only worry is forgetting to check them before leaving it unattended, as some light fingered lot might try to force the windows down if they see a gap to get a purchase on. I had an attempt like this on my truck in daylight in a hotel car park, luckily they were seen and chased off by one of the staff.

Have look at the winder handles and when shut fully where are they pointing, may need handles repositioning , contact your dealer to have them altered.

Thought I was going mad! Mine does the same!..came out this morning and rear driver manual window open about 6 inches! Storm last night so seats soaking wet!..

no consellation but glad it’s not just me!... will be phoning ford on Monday!

I agree with iantt, I have always made sure window window handles are positioned on the shaft so that if vibration etc makes the handle want to creep downwards under their own weight, they are going in the direction of winding window upwards.

Mine does this regularly but as soon as they get 1/2 inch   down you can hear the wind noise so I just wind them up again.

I thought it was me going mad too, though strange forces have been at work lol. I never thought about it before but the explanation that @iantt and @isetta makes perfect sense.

I've had exactly the same issue with my car since new and it always bothered me.

At first I used to blame the kids for not closing them properly, feel really bad about that now!

Never even thought about position of the window handle itself and how that could affect it with vibration of driving, etc.

However I have actually found a unintended "cure" for the problem...I noticed no more dropped windows as soon as I'd fitted my wind deflectors!  I suspect this is due to the extra resistance and friction when the window is put into the fully closed position due to the additional material of the deflector pressing against the glass.

im still in the habit of checking the rear windows every time I use the car wash which is probably no bad thing but am going to check window handle positions very soon.

Is it easy enough to change the handle positions oneself rather than wasting a day waiting for my Ford dealer to do it?

Just checked my rear window handle positions...it's only by lifting the handle in an upwards direction that the window lowers so don't think that the handle position is the cause for the window dropping over a period of time.

First photograph shows the handle position when window is fully closed, and second photograph shows the inadvertent solution I found to prevent the window from dropping...

That's a great idea and might prevent my wife from knocking the window slightly open with her knee whenever she sits in the back with out little 'un. Thanks Ian!

thanks for something i posted 3 yrs ago. lol

Blame Caebach1 for resurrecting the thread... ;-)

Besides which - better late than never!

Yeah, take the window winder handles off and repostion so they point more upwards rather than downwards . , so if for example your winding the handle clockwise to close, the handle wants to be at 2 o clock in the closed position . Winding the handle anticlockwise the handle wants to be at 11o clock in the closed position

My current car has electric rear windows and this has never happened so I think it has got to be the window winders that are causing it.

Many thank for suggestion , ive just relocated winding handles, will post to to forum if it give a fix.
