I hated the start stop when I first got my car, I love it now and try and use it at every opportunity

  • Ford have done extensive testing of stop start, battery more than capable, starter bench tested to death , they seem to cope OK . I've not heard of any starter failures so far and stop start been a w

  • Wouldn't buy a car without stop start

  • I usually keep cars until I find'em in a heap of rust and I refuse to pay a right arm to get a new starter-ring fitted :)

So bascially stop start is to make the figres look good on ford mpg on the fiesta, or does it help you get free car tax aswell due to emmisions

Both.

Both :)

Both, with the addition that it does actually save you some fuel :)

EDIT: Lol, 3 people all saying both at the same time.

Save enough fuel to warrent a new starter and battery when ever how long they last? I really want to know how long the starter and battery last with stop start compared to non stop start

I'd expect it to last the same amount of time.

They should both have the same "design life".

Didn't think the little ecoboost was DMF.

Its not - It has an intentionally unbalanced flywheel per this link

When my car was involved in a crash, and was left standing at the repair place for 6 weeks, the battery died from lack of use. Not just discharged, properly died.

Fortunately it was all covered under warranty (amazingly). What is more amazing though is they drove the car back 15 miles with the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree and thought it was all fine! With the Stop/Start and TCS seemingly disabled..

Took them another 2 weeks to pick it up and repair after that.. Ballbags.

I wouldn't worry about how long the starter will last for, some people still drive 80's escorts with several hundred K's clocked up and on the factory starter, you have a very long time to go before it will become an issue, Ford actually seem to have decent starter motors, just the rust you have to worry about after 3 years.

Yebut, replacing the starter motor is pennies compared to replacing a starter-ring.

You mention 80's Escorts, in todays traffic the ecoboost might start 10 times in a 5 mile "queue", that's maybe 3 days worth for an old Escort.

If i'm stuck in miles of traffic, I will turn off the stop/start. Just for peace of mind really, and to give that little start motor a well deserved rest ;)

the escort has 20+years over the fiesta, plus 20+ years of newer, better materials and manufacturing R&D, the list goes on and on.

Not to mention it has to be a tiny little thing on this car and cost under £100 to buy one in years to come.

I'd be more worries about it rusting as some MK7's already have or the tiny little matchstick internals bending under 140BHP+ as some of them have, or the tiny little turbo burning out, that'll be £800+ just to buy, not to mention these cars will be neglected beyond belief as most Fiesta owners only car for them in the first 3 years for fear of invalidating warranty and never change the oil on them after.

Far more worrying things to replace than a starter motor, it's even in a very easy to access place and a 14year old could do it with a beer in one hand in under 30mins.

Since I bought my car 2 months ago the s/s hasn't worked. I have looked into the reasons and found that the battery is faulty it will not charge above 60%. You need 75% for the s/s to work. The car is 2 years old and 28000mls. The most likely reason for the duff battery is that someone jump started it or jump started another car, this a big no no with s/s batteries as is using a home battery charger. A replacement is over £200 as it has to be coded to the car.

Mac

Battery doesn't have to be coded to the car, not sure what gave you that idea...

Salesman must have loved you.

When fitting new battery the battery monitoring needs resetting, so probably what he been told as coding,

Resetting takes all of 10 seconds if you know how,

How do you reset the battery? Is it something can be done without going to a dealer. I doubt if I will bother to get the s/s working as there are a lot of mixed feelings about the value of it. It was never fitted on cars to save money but to get the emissions lower.

if you want to reset battery monitoring, its fairly straight forward. got it written down somewhere, will let you know tommorow , unless anyone on here knows before me.

know its along shot but arnt the enhanced flooded batterys got 3 year warranty through ford?, i might be wrong, will find out also.

know standard battery is 12 months

when you fit a new battery, resetting of battery monitoring is as follows

Ign on for 10 secs

press foglamp swith 5 times

press hazard switch 3 times

wait up to 10 while watching battery light

battery light flashes

ign off.

job done

now use car as normal

Just hate it lol, i know they beef up starter and battery but how long you reakon they will last?

thats what you call a beefed up starter, solenoid nearly as big as motor, or motor nearly as small as solenoid

Thanks Ian for the information, when I get a new battery it will be invaluable and save a few quid on dealer prices.

Mac

Just out of interest how was your battery checked? As it needs to be a start stop battery tester for the type of battery, Ford dealers obiously use the right tester.but non ford may not and give wrong result.

While on electrics, are there any wiring diagrams anywhere?
