Screen Smearing

Featured Replies

I'll admit, I used to use Autoglym when I got my first car, just for cleaning, then started using the glass cleaner and all the polish etc. Started using the rest of the kit for all the trims, interior shampoo etc.

Ford gave me some **** called Diamondbrite that I actually paid for... just leave's white marks on anything black, especially after the guys at Ford do it, that went in the bin, asked me if I wanted it for my next car, said I wasn't prepared to pay £200 quid for it again and they did it for free... Third time I told them not even to touch the car!

For the glass cleaner and the interior stuff it seems alright, I haven't really paid for anything other than the interior cleaners and some microfibre cloths and the screen wash.

But i've heard from professional detailers it's just for the "standard car wash kind of people", still need to use the rest of mine...

  • Black residue is perfectly normal and would happen even if the blades were only a few weeks old.  Just make sure you give them a good wipe and do so regularly so they don't start to smear/streak.

  • Small story for you, last Ford Fair... Screen was smearing for some reason, remembered I was behind a Larry st some point and realised it must have been the spray/dirt, tried spraying screen wash

It's interesting to hear some negative comments about Autoglym, normally it's the opposite. I was going to recommend their glass polish to the OP because I've used it a lot and it works well. Yes it creates some powder but I assumed that's just part of the process. But of course I'm no professional so I'm not going to try and persuade everyone to go out and buy some Autoglym products lol.

Autoglym is along the most powdery glass polishes ive ever used. You get to the end of a job go to polish the glass and the whole car is covered in dust

I haven't had any powder with the fast glass.

Some of their products are overpriced, I tend to pick and choose the best products (up to a certain price) between various manufacturers.

I have Dodo Juice, Meguiars, Autoglym, all sorts depending on the product. I'm not loyal to a particular brand, lol.

Fast glass is glass cleaner, not polish[emoji14]

Its basically a high % alcohol mixture as are most glass cleaners

Ah ok, well it does what I want it to, don't feel a need to polish the glass on mine.

My car only really gets cleaned a handful of times a year, lol.

I never polish glass unless I'm applying a ceramic Hydrophobic coating to it. Every other time I use Kleen freaks glass cleaner & sealant 👍

What is a ceramic Hydrophobic coating Kieran?

And why would you want one?

Now that's a lot clearer (no pun intended)

Haha! They're a game changer. I use Gtechniq G1 on my car now, I used it on all Windows, and the front is always topped up with Kleen freaks glass cleaner & sealant to aid the screenwash in cleaning and lay down extra protection.

Perhaps G1 would be of help to the OP...

Are you going to stock it?

Or do you, and I've missed it?

Always seen this, is it actually worth it? Will I ever need to use wipers in the rain or can I just out my foot down and watch it disappear?

I might have to check out the Gtechniq stuff, my wipers are smearing a bit. But maybe the wipers need cleaning or even replacing after nearly 2 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if that stuff will make the rain flow off the windscreen without using wipers - I've seen that before after using the Autoglym polish but it never lasted (probably need something better for a lasting effect).

Mine smears a bit and tried a few,Rain x being one and cleaned the blades with it,they do judder a bit off and on.

New'ish blades,i never wash my screen when car is washed unless i clean the screen after,be great help to know the best stuff.

And screen wash.

Above 30mph, you won't need to use your wipers. It will also stop ice sticking to your windscreen :)

Lasts upto 2 years too!

If you've got grease on the screen, try panel wipe

Also, cleanyourride.co.uk has samples of sonax Apple screenwash. 50ml makes 5L

What do you think of Rain X,it helps a lot and had it in the shed for a while now, just to clean windows and blades and use Sonax screen wash after.

I use Rain X. Seems fairly good and over 40ish its really good. Have it on my back window, side windows, mirror and front window. See below though as I'm unsure if its causing smearing.

I have a smearing, but unsure if its my window or what. @GingerFlame you can help me on this one.

First issue:

1) After cleaning my car,  I still notice the 'dirty' area at the top of my window there the wipers miss. Now I cleaned my full windscreen with simonz car wax/shampoo (whilst I was going around the car) and then I used Vinegar on the screen (didn't read the bit about not doing it first...). But Even when the car was dry I could still see a little area at the top of my windows there the car missed (when I was wiping the vinegar off). Over a day/2 it comes back quite quickly - how can I get rid of this?

2) My windows streak a bit when the wipers move, after I have wiped them and cleaned the window. Now is this just the Rain X smearing since there isn't much rain on the window or do I need to try and clean the screen with something else?

I'm also using Car Plan ready mixed screenwash (I ran out and it was the only thing at the petrol station)

Just got some Fast Glass just waiting for it to come, only £6.50 so had some.

Its like oil slick on the screen in places, all colours as just had a look, getting some Autoglym screen wash tomorrow as

im close to halfords so will try that, clean my screen and new screen wash and see what goes on then, use halfords own screen wash now,

Have you tried Degreaser or panel wipe on the glass for the "oil slick" spots?

Also, using cheap screenwash won't help with the wiper judder as it won't break down any dirt on the screen before the wipers hit it

I have gtechniq G1 as a base with Kleen freaks glass cleaner & sealant mixed into the screenwash.

Whatever you do, you'll never prevent the dirty edges altogether. I drive the girlfriend crazy because I don't use the wipers unless I absolutely have to. Then I sulk, and break out the glass cleaner & sealant at the next opportunity :)

Well i tried Rain X and cleaned wipers and screen and works great for a while,i tend to get wax soap on it when washing the car at times but

only having this Autoglym screenwash as close to halfords,i have used halfords screenwash for ages so this may be the problem.

Never tried the wipes, trying from start, even new blades as i have had these blades off ebay on 3 of my cars and always 100% so cant go to them.
