Automatic Windscreen wipers?

Featured Replies

Well while I'm sure my GF would be very grateful, she'd call me a tit for being the one that gets wet.

Do you open the door for your passenger first, then get in? Or rather, get in, and make your passenger wait in the rain? Central locking is a god-send!

I always open the door for passengers first even though there is central locking. mostly my passenger is either the missus, any of our parents or siblings or close friends. I would consider not showing this simple courtesy to be extremely rude behaviour although I accept that others don't bother these days.

Courtesy? It's !Removed! patronising.

Extremely rude? You're 'avin a laugh.

Young kids and old codgers fair enough, but anyone else should be able to open a !Removed! door for themselves. I take it your missus isn't Germaine Greer?

Joking apart, next time you do it, can you get someone to video it as I'll !Removed! myself watching, honestly, the world has gone mad.

Hey Keith...

I'm with Am here. It IS common courtesy to open doors for passengers...especially Ladies, regardless of age.

I was bought up in a generation that ACTUALLY taught manners.

This is why there are so many s**ts around who don't give a f**k about anyone!!

This attitude makes me puke!!! Sorry

incar tv systems have a safty system where an earth wire that connects into the handbrake wiring so that when the handbrake is in the off position the tv will not work, so people find this wire and fix it to a perminant earth point so the tv works all the time. just do not tell your insurance when you pile into the car infront

TBH I'm in agreement with Keith on this one

Only people I would open the door for are elderly relatives or my mother. Friends, GF, the bruv can all let themselves in. Don't get me wrong, I do hold the door open for the person behind me, I do give up my seat to those who I deem actually have a greater need for it than me. I do offer assistance to people who are clearly in need of it to get up the stairs at the train station like mothers & grandmothers with prams, 90 year olds with luggage that weighs more than they do etc etc etc

On top of that, if I opened the car door for my gf or others I would thouroughly expect and deserve the reaction to be "WTF?"

If opened the door first for any of my passengers, old or new, they'd think I was the one being rude.

The only person who gets a hand is my grandma, and only when she's getting into something lower than normal. Even then I only close the door for her - it's seriously patronising otherwise. Makes people think you are treating them like an invalid.

My GF would laugh in my face (and so would I). It's a modern world - chivalry is NOT dead; but common sense prevails. I still hold a door in a shop etc for man OR woman. I'll say 'after you' when getting out of a lift to a man or woman.

There's nothing wrong with doing that if you choose to do so, I'm just pointing out that nobody in my social groups would ever consider it normal. And that's not wrong or right :)

You bad mannered so and sos  the reason you get a WTF reaction is because those concerned aren't used to it - if they were, they'd appreciate it, and wouldn't be patronised by it. I ALWAYS open the door for the other half, same as I offer her her coat, pull out her chair when sitting (if appropriate), walk on the outside of the pavement etc etc etc. For others I also give up my seat on a train, hold doors open, etc etc etc.

One receives many positive comments for good manners - nobody has EVER said 'erm, excuse me, let go of that door immediately, how dare you patronise me?' in fact, the idea is :lol::lol:

I do all sorts for the GF (seriously), but door opening is a bit extreme. My manners are often complimented (last night at midnight I helped neighbours rescue their cars and gritted 100 yards of road), but you don't need to open someone's door to be polite :) It's utter madness in the pouring rain!

I really don't understand how opening a car door can ever be deemed patronising!? Yes, people rarely open a car door for me (if ever  ) it's the kinda thing you see in a mushy film really, but the last thing I would be is offended if someone felt the need to do so for me... What planet are you all on?? lol

Yet you're the one with the foul language, go figure.

Irony at it's best.

So, where does it stop?

Do you open the front door of the house for them when they arrive home?

Do you pull the sheets back before she gets into bed?

Do you wipe her backside for her when she's dropped the kids of at the pool?

I have plenty of manners but what you're suggested, opening car doors for all and sundry is way over the top. But, if it makes you feel important and good, you carry on, but cut the language, you just look a hypocrite. ;)

Not all of us Flic... ;)

amen....

Britain is getting a bad rep....this thread is demonstrating why.

Back to a previous comment...its a proven fact that the human brain assumes a smaller object is going slower than a large object, IE lorry fast, bike slow...just thought maybe interesting to some of ya'll.

Plus are not DRL sidelights?? and motorbikes used dipped??

Also, if the few 1000 numpties who dont check bulbs and go round with one headlight all the time put a new bulb in...then its quite easy to tell diiference between a bike and car!!!!

All about observation....thats true....but once observed its just as important with what you do next!! ;)

Why?

coz people just don't care anymore...shows when people walk, talk and drive.

I gota admit, when i go abroad, I pretend to be Irish! not english!

So, why is this thread demonstrating why people don't care?

I must admit that I'm also a bit surprised by the chivalry section of this thread. Can't say I ever open the car door for anyone except my Granny, who I deem to be potentially incapable of doing it.

Whether thats because I'm the result of the decline of British soceity or not I'll let everyone else be the judge. I'm not going to list things I've done which make me a decent person but I like to think that I've been brought up well and have better manners than most, but opening the car door for passengers is something which I've never done, and nobody has ever mentioned it. (Including my mum, who screams when we pass a lorry on the motorway! :P )

coz people just don't care anymore...shows when people walk, talk and drive.

So because someone doesn't deem opening a door for someone a requirement, we are suddenly the dregs of society?

Very much a laughable conclusion to come to. Particularly from only one aspect alone.

I bet plenty of people who don't open doors for passengers still do plenty of good for society. I'm quite content with my input to the world, so don't see why I should continue to justify an argument.

This thread has win written all over it. Firstly, people moaning about innovative electrics in modern cars. On a car enthusiast thread? Then moaning about chivalry with respect to opening a car door. Interesting. We must be stuck in the early Victorian times where electric was suspicious and we all wore frilly clothing. (I still do wear frilly clothes by the way)

no no...it was just an attitude I picked up from a couple of posts...I don't open doors on me car unless its me mum or nan either...but some were talking abou attitude...thats more what I meant...I notice it a lot on the roads no, just no one cares about anyone else...all me me me...wasn't being specific bout openin a car door! Put ya hackles down...

"Firstly, people moaning about innovative electrics in modern cars. On a car enthusiast thread?"....

... to be particular, are you saying a site dedicated to classic cars that have no electric annoyances are not a car enthusiast threads/forums???

Its all about opinions etc...and I been there with these auto gadgets, trying to fix the dam ecu that is convinced that they don't exist or that its dark or that its raining or that the stereo has no CD player or that the car has no PAS...I have worked late into the night on these cars and sigh whenever I hear someone moaning or buying a car with these coz I know the headaches and annoyance when they go wrong or decide to override your decision!

But if someone else loves them, so be it, don't let me be the one to remove the love for the gadgets...I love gadgets as much as the next male!! I just worry as to where we are gona end up...they already developing fly by wire brakes and steering...and that simply scares me.

But this is not a classic forum and we are not discussing classic cars - that's the only point I feel the need to make.

Make no bones about it: electrics can and do fail. But modern cars are far more reliable than yester-year, even with electronics all over. You don't see that many cars (as a percentage on the roads) broken down like in the seventies, when cars broke down regularly and that was normal!

While problems do exist, most of it can be attributed to PEBCAK in my experience. I've had the odd issue with my cars over time, but nothing that's worth getting hot under the collar about. I'm sure plenty of people have though, and I feel for them. But you pay your money, you take your chance.

Electronic devices in cars are tested extensively for safety and reliability. We read about the problems daily on forums, but you don't read about the millions that are absolutely 100% satisfied, because that's boring and nobody cares to write "I have a Ford Mondeo and it works fine".

ah, but the 70s cars were easy to fix...make your own conclusion on this but...

Older cars not so reliable but simply to repair when did go wrong...

New cars more reliable but could be a write off when go wrong without a scratch on the bodywork!!

And this is Ford Owners Club, not Brand New Ford Owners Club!!!

There are mk1/2/3 fiesta owners, and same with other models...we can't forget where our nice new cars started...and this accommodates that nicely :)

and I can't believe that the electronics are tested that well...sure they say they are....but greed makes me think otherwise!! and I got to admit, it was always the brand new cars, and high end (BMW, Merc, Audi) that when I was a mechanic were the common diagnostic headaches...I just going from my experience...thats not to say its the same across the board :)

Piggy :)

And this is Ford Owners Club, not Brand New Ford Owners Club!!!

What's the title of this thread?

As far as I can see, that points me to the direction of the modern Ford.

This thread is turning into a bit of a tennis match with not much actually very close to its original topic.

For my part - I think the disappearance of manners and courtesy is indeed a shame - I do not however think that anyone who doesn't hold open doors for their passengers is the scum of the earth, actually I look on it as their loss but nothing more.

With my moderator hat on, let's stop going round in circles and dead horse flogging please - there is clearly a difference of opinion, and neither is right or wrong, that's how opinions work.

Oh, and Piggy - fly by wire is safer than a conventional linkage any day of the week - which is why the most advanced aircraft in the world make use of it. A problem with a physical linkage means a problem that probably can't be fixed without external help - fly-by-wire systems have back ups on back ups on back ups, with redundancy and other similar things taken into account. Don't fear it - embrace it, because it's already in your Fiesta in basic form.

thank goodness...back to topic or what....

but heck no with fly by wire...have you thought what may happen when the power goes...oh yeah, nothing coz you can't control it no more!!! its nuts!!!

little bit of water and an ECU goes nuts, what do you think wil happen then when its controling your steering and brakes...I either want to be dead when they bring that in or driving a 1990 colt with cables and a carb!!!

I will take a mechanical linkage over an electrical connection any day of the week, year and month!!!

Guys - I guess fly by wire is 'progress' and to be honest whilst I never had any problems with the cable system on my older cars I’ve had fly by wire on my last 4 cars and never had a problem either.

Just going back on topic for a second having had auto wipers on other cars I find they can be a useful addition particularly on wet roads when an HGV comes around the bend and chucks a load of spray at you the wipers go into quick mode automatically and you can keep you hands on the steering wheel turning the corner – auto wipers get 9/10 from me :)

The auto lights mmmmmm not sure, I find often on grey days when 60% of traffic have their lights on and I should too the system can fail to switch them on, so I’ll give it an 7/10
