Handbrake Turn

I'm curious to know what kind of damage you can do to the car when trying to do a handbrake turn. I'll admit I've done it once before but afterwards my friend came up to me and told me it can brake off the rear brakes, needless to say I haven't done it again.

Although recently he did the same thing but a lot harder and sharper turn in his Saxo and he didn't seem to mind at all.

I've tried googling the question but apart from tyre damage nothing much seems to come up.

Note: When i did the handbrake turn it was in an empty car park with no one around so i wasn't being a risk to anyone, apart from myself.

I cant imagine it will let youre no claims build up for your neons if you have a bump anyway :lol:

I found out the hard way at 18 i had a Escort Mk1 1.3 and after some Handbrake fun...the car developed a wobble.

A trip to the local garage confirmed 2 new rear tyres were required along with a new half shaft...Cost me a few quid at the time:(...but it didn`t stop me dreaming i had a mexico on the unmade roads....:)

True but thats rear wheel drive too.

It wont damage it like that but at the end of the day if you want to behave like that IF something does happen, its well deserved.

Anyway, lets not get into that as i have done it too.

Back in my "boy racer" days, we used to do it for days at a time but never suffered ANY damage apart from your hanbrake cable getting seriously stretched and tyre wear

Ive had to remove the neons :( insurance not till ive been driving for a year...but i'll be in uni by then and have left my car behind so no point.

Ok, well thats good to know that i wont find my back brakes fall apart on me any time soon cause if it :lol:

Although i think from now on i'll be keeping handbrake turns to a minimum since i just got nice new wheels on it :P

I suppose it wouldn't cause major damage unless you fudged it up and had an accident.

In my early driving days I was stupid to do handbrakes turns when the oppurtunity arised in my little Pug I had at the time, went through rear tyres like they were going out of fashion (grown up a bit now though!).

I'd say the main thing would be excessive tyre wear on the rear tyres, probably take the wheels out of balance over time, and obviously wear and tear on the handbrake itself.

Which my friend learned is something that shouldn't be messed with, he used his Dad's '54 Renault Laguna sometimes and he used to handbrake turn it rotton ... Until he parked it on a hill outside his Nan's house. 15 minutes later, the handbrake snapped, the car rolled backwards down the hill and hit the corner of a house... And wrote itself off.

it puts excessive strain on the rear suspension obviously doesnt do youre bushes any good if you do it a lot and knackers the old tyres in extreme cases ive seen wheel bolts snap but thats about it saxo drivers need i say all the same remember he might think hes smart but youre the smarter one if the cops bust you for it and you arent doing it
