So, Friday night I was driving along (2006 st) and out of no where the car suddenly cuts out and I have to coast it to the road side, at first I thought the one of the front tyres had blown as it went with abit of a pop! But clearly it wasn't! Anyway while at the side of the road I tried to start it but it wasn't having any of it, was turning over alright but it wasn't even trying to fire up.

So I called the old man to get a tow to the garage and When I dropped it off at the garage that night the bloke at the garage thought crankshaft sensor? What do you guys think?

That happened on my A3, it turned out to be the cam belt, basically it won't start as the engine isn't actually moving and there the position sensor doesn't see anything and thinks it's at fault.

The popping sound would have been the belt slapping about

I thought the st's had a chain not cambelt? So it shouldn't slip/snap? But I hope to god it's not that though!

Chains can still go too. Even worse when they go as they get sucked into the pulleys and go round and round where a belt just gets shredded. Open the oil cap and turn the key, if the cams aren't turning the belt is gone.

Yeah I suppose they can, I didn't think of that :/ I havnt got the car as it's at the garage and he's going to have a look first thing in the morning and let me know

but that's a good tip mate for looking into the oil cap to see if the cams turning, wish I thought of that at the time!
