Clutch Dmf On Older Mondeo Help.

Right basically I've got my mk3 1.8 mondeo which has just had the clutch go... It's a 2001 with 149k on the clock and was wondering if it was worth my money (600 coz it's probably original DMF too which will need doing too) am I wasting my time putting another 600 into it at that age and mileage and will I just end up plowing more and more on it in the near future...

Its always a difficult decision - it can depend on all sorts of other things like the condition of the car, the length of the MOT, how many new parts have been bought for it etc, and if you really like the car

Given the milage, the sensible choice may be to cut your losses, not spend any more money on the car and get rid of it (it must be worth at least £200)

The £200 could go to another car, you could even get a newer, lower milage Mondeo, at an affordable price the £200+ you get for the old one and the £600 you planned to spend (£800+ in total) cpuld go towards it

to be honest thats quite a lump, the mileage and age means it may well be a waste, but you could get a cheaper kit.

Well I've just put 300 on it for mot 4 days before clutch went and it had 0 advisories on that (had to get 2 front springs and 2 rear drop links on it) so I'll hopefully get a while out of it...and I've got hold of another garage that'll do job for 450-500

But it's not the easiest... Either spend a load on a car with high mileage or get rid n hope I get something reliable coz there's nothing to say the car I'd buy is gonna last any longer.. At least I know the problems have been sorted on mine...

Oh and I live in the !Removed! end of nowhere so getting a new car would be difficult so I'm thinking more get this going again save up and get a new one in 6 months or so

Given you got the cost down more it's a good result but if I was you I would start watching the market for a replacement as personally the next thing that went wrong in the next year I would be stripping the clutch put of it and then sending it for crushing.

Yeah that's what I'm gonna do shame really as I had an 02 1.8 before at 130k and that never skipped a beat for 2 years until I sold it hence why I bought another. Really like the car just hope this isn't a dud

The comparison that you need to make is what it costs to get you to the position that you have a reliable car that actually goes. It is always difficult to estimate future costs of unreliability, but, with the car that you have got you should at least be in a good position to know the condition.

Do you think this expense is a bit of a blip, or are there going to be ongoing problems? Well, only you can make an informed guess at that, but guess is what you'll have to do.

On the other hand, you could scrap this car (by your description of your location, it might be difficult to sell bits off, but that is a possibility for making some cash back) and buy another. This is a whole new risk, as you could buy a 'lemon' that someone else is desperate to get rid of, and that would put you in an equally bad, or worse, position than you are in now. But if, looking around the on-line car sales sites, you think that it would cost a lot more to get to the situation that you have a good, going, car with a good expectation of reliability (warranty? that might be asking a bit much), then that more or less makes your decision for you.

Yeah it's not the easiest position but tbh I've got the price down 0 advisories on the MOT and I was warned that the clutch was going when he did the springs and drop links for the MOT just thought it would last longer, but everything looks in good nick apparently and the mechanic is local and known to the other halves family so I'm hoping I've not got my judgement wrong with him think only other job is a slightly sticking Handbrake on one side apparently...

I'm thinking if you can keep the costs down on the clutch and be wary of the injectors then go for it :-)

Yeah well i'm now towing it 3 miles between garages later so I can get it done how much are injectors gonna cost? Is it worth doing them before they go?

Depends average cost of refurb is 400-600,but it depends if they are delphi or not.

Ah right so if they go it's probably it then.... Might get it a decent service too just coz I don't know when it last had one

That was an interesting first tow ever thankfully my bumper is still attached and car is now in the garage for repair. Clutch totally blown goes in gear no clutch pedal n engine on n nice burning smell when being towed with engine in too....

Honestly I think doing the clutch is the only sensible option. An 11 year old mondeo with no clutch is worth virtually nothing and you could pay out thousands on another car and the clutch could go a few weeks later! If yours is a petrol the dmfs usually last the life of the car (unlike the diesels) but if you're not doing the job yourself it makes sense to change it.
