New Car Miles, How Many Is Too Much?

I'm asking this because I've recently just brought a new ford fiesta black edition and the dealer said no one will drive it and no one had test driven it when I picked it up. He assured me this however when I picked it up it had 20 miles on the clock. Am I being stupid? Just kinda thinking anything could of happened in them miles from someone red lining it to someone grinding the gears...

Mine had 13 miles on it when I picked it up. Makes me wonder, cos I've seen others had about 5. And I've ground the gears a couple of times myself lol, hopefully these gears can take a lot of punishment though.

Driving onto/off transporters, driven out of the factory, all add up. If it was over 50 I would be asking questions, 20 seems reasonable to me

The average speed was also 14 I'm sure they don't drive on and off the transporter that quick however...

I'm pretty sure they have to test drive it, and part of that is to put a bit of petrol in? Maybe I'm completely wrong. Picked up mine today and it had 10 miles on it

Yeah fair enough just not having the best of experiences now with the dealer after picking it up and it's making me question things that's all

I would say it's normal. Not only on and off transporters but between parking too. As said above its only a concern if it's 50 or over.

20 miles is perfectly normal for a new car, its not far when you consider how much it goes through between leaving the production line and sitting in the showroom for you to collect. :)

Generally new cars can build up a bit of mileage just from being driven round the factory plus in and out of the various compounds they transit through on their way to the dealer.

Generally drive-testing is slimmed down to a bare minimum but in some cases they'll sample certain cars which then go on an extended drive test at the factory, if any dynamic issues are picked up this may be repeated to validate it's been repaired properly.

As above, it's not something to worry about.

I believe the rules are up to around 150 delivery miles ford are allowed to put on the car. 20 is very low yours is about average. I've had a 33 , a 80 and a mid 20 ish new fiestas.

Mine had 10 and a full tank of fuel so wasn't complaining :P only 7 when I'd viewed it in the showroom *sighs* haha 20 seems fine though :)

I win. Mine had 127 miles on the clock. Delivered from Midlands to my home by driver. Upside was the ~half tank fuel.

Couldn't you buy a new car more locally?!

Would have to wonder if the dealer can 'reset' the delivery mileage if they feel the need.

Reason I say this is that I can't imagine a car being able to go through all it's production processes and drive test then driven around various compounds and only put 1 mile on the clock. Typically the car will be driven between different facilities in the factory for 'on wheels' processes, undergo a rolling road test doing dynamic brakes and gears testing, a squeak and rattle road test possibly incorporating some functional testing as well, then be driven to dispatch compound and on/off various trains and transporters on it's merry way to the dealer. That's for a car going straight through production with no repairs or re-tests required, which will add to the mileage.

Manufacturers would love it if they could get cars to customers with only 1 mile on the clock as this would vastly reduce the amount of fuel they need to put in before the car (hopefully) drives off the production line.

I had 171! Delivered to Bedfordshire all the way from Halifax. And yeah, so fuel efficient I had basically 2/3 of the tank afterwards :D

Reason it was ordered from so far away was the ~3k difference in price to any other dealer locally :) and 171 miles is worth that much saving!

I've read that dealers can reset the mileage upto 30miles.

Bought my car through Drive The Deal and saved a few thousand. Damn beaten into second :)

Same here but I went and collected mine, nice 230 mile drive enjoyed by me not a delivery driver. Lol

Id be !Removed! it driving up there in the car I'm trading in lol. Was on high alert just driving a mile to the dealers to get mine

Same here, I saved about £2600 off the retail price, took the train to pick it up and by the time I got it home it had about 200 miles on it :)

6 months later and it has just over 6000 miles, and you can tell how much I enjoy driving it because my daily commutes would have only added up to just under 2000 miles in that time. Any excuse to go for a drive haha.
