Immediately after starting a cold engine I can hear a noise that goes after several seconds. What is this? Car has only done 750 miles, I am getting very poor MPG. Stethoscopes for automotive and industrial purposes are available quite cheaply on the Internet. I think the point that everyone is trying to make is that you haven't told us what the noise sounds like so the suggestion is get someone else to start the engine while you have the engine open to see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from. To me, the Noise /Sound is quiet and lasts 8 to 10 seconds, it could be longer ....it sounds as if something is being engaged or disengaged. Perhaps it is the choke configuration. It only happens on cold start with foot on brake (its an Automatic) Throttle not touched, Engine on tick-over. The car is a dream to drive. Goodkat Posted November 9, 2014 Share Posted November 9, 2014 All fords nowadays make odd noises of some sort, my Focus, for instance, sounds like a jet shutting down when the engine is shut down, it makes an odd ABS noise when going at 15mph for the first time in a journey and makes a weird noise when locking. It could be a perfectly normal noise, but not many people have noticed it on their car yet so the internets doesn't know about it. If you are very worried and cannot find the answer have a word with Ford, I doubt they will be overly helpful but it would be worth a shot.
