Unknown Clutch/gearbox Noise 03 Focus Zetec

Hi folks,

I'm looking for some help with our Focus which developed an eyebrow-raising noise when changing up, I'm fairly sure it's always when changing from 2nd to 3rd. Car is 2003 1.6 Zetec petrol.

It doesn't happen every time, maybe one in five 2nd-3rd changes. The noise sounds just like a short tire squeal, but it's definitely not tire noise. There's no other abnormal noise or feel, just this. Mechanically-minded friends say this could be a clutch release bearing that's going, but not yet been confirmed. Had hoped to get another oppinion from Focus owners.

Does anyone here have any experience with a problem like this?
