Car battery MK8

Featured Replies

First question I'd ask is why do you think you need a new battery ?

Next question would be - if you do need a new battery and it's the original still fitted then it's lasted 9 years so why wouldn't you just replace it with the exact same and hope it will last another 9 years ?

just do a reset to bmc or do you need to change the values in ford scan?

BCM = Body Control Module       BMS = Battery Monitor System       BMC = British Motor Corporation

If you are changing the capacity of the battery you need to change the settings using FORScan.

It should still fit it did in mine at least went from 242 175 175 to 278 175 190 just had to modify top bracket to allow for increased hight. You will need to use forscan to change battery spec.

Can any tell me what would happen if you did not change the battery Spec?

Then the car will only part charge the battery and you will get zero benefit from fitting a higher capacity

car will still work but battery won't ever be fully charged. one other benefit i noticed was auto start stop stopped for longer without restarting and more often probably because it new it had a larger power reserve.

If u don't have forscan , does that mean that you need to go to a main dealer to replace the battery so they can then rescan ? By the way mine is I think a mark 7  a 63 plate but reg Jan of 2014

I'd hope a tank of fuel and a hooker for that too. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I bought it in Spain at 114€ equivalent to 125 dollars

in the ford scan, I could not find a specification equal to the E39 battery,
is there any way to add the values?

What will be the best choice?

Do I keep the usage percentage at 80%?

You need to adjust the 'State Of Charge' (SOC) to 95%

It is not the battery type or capacity that you should change, unless of course you have fitted a different battery.

Você precisa ajustar o ' State Of Charge ' (SOC) para 95%

Não é o tipo ou a capacidade da bateria que você deve alterar, a menos, é claro, que você tenha instalado uma bateria diferente.

I installed a varta E39 70 Ah and 760cca

Best option is to set battery type '2'  80Ah and 700cca

Also change SOC to 95%

A melhor opção é definir o tipo de bateria '2' 80Ah e 700cca

Altere também o SOC para 95%

Will there be a problem with the battery having 70Ah and this choice 80ah?

It should be OK. The charging system will automatically adjust it's rate of charge to deal with it.

I would set it to No1 70 ah cca value is less important than ah rating

Battery soc is best at 80% for battery longevity.

well if you consider disposing of car batteries every 3 years because owners get fed up with things not working then 80% is the way to go.

Or you could set it for 90 or even 95% and have a battery that will last for 5 to 7 years and for most of the time provide all the power needed and have owners who enjoy having the car work as it was designed.

if changing from efb to agm then things like SS will work more often and for longer without increasing SOC. if increasing SOC target from 80% to 95% expect a battery service life reduction of around 50% and fuel economy will be slightly lower  as the car will be less able to charge during trailing throttle due to reduced charging capacity (20% to 5%).

my original lasted 3 years, so now I switched to an agm to see if it lasts longer.
So as recommended I chose option 2 in forscan, but kept it at 80% to see if it behaves.

However, despite having 80Ah and the battery only 70Ah, I still haven't had any errors in forscan.

The thing about fitting an AGM Battery to a EFB one is that the AGM one can take a more onerous charging cycle, so to get the maximum benefit then it is a good idea to change the charging cycle to an AGM one.

Not changing it will just mean that the Battery will be given a charge as if it was an EFB one, which will not do it any harm, may even be better for longevity, but better to give it the charge that it has been designed for to get the maximum benefit for the extra that you paid.
