  • Covers are indeed available. eBay would be a good bet, although you can get them new from Ford - £53 new, £25 eBay. Any cars from Sept 2020 build onward don't now come with engine covers which is

Dribbly washer doesn't surprise me on a Ford but at least they are placed under the bonnet and so don't leave marks on the paintwork - maybe they have learned their lesson from Mk2?

I noticed the big silver box as well - will have to see what it says in the handbook

If I'm correct that should be the intercooler, one that's cooled by the coolant not air.

Spelling correction

I had a mk2 focus that caught fire on the plastic cover and burned the all engine.

I'm glad my current mk4 focus doesn't have that ***** . Spared me some time removing it !

Ah that's interesting.  Never knew that was a thing!

Lets hope they're a bit more robust than EGR coolers, turbocharging water into the intake wouldn't be ideal!

Not heard of any failures on either the old 1.5 ecoboost or this variant water cooled intercoolers . On the MK4 2.0 litre diesel the intercooler has its own coolant circuit with a small expansion bottle.

Interesting thread. I’ve commented twice early on, no recollection of much these days. About the bonnet release , am I right in saying if it won’t open , if someone pulls and holds the lever while someone else lifts the bonnet it’ll release?

You'll need someone to push down on the bonnet whilst someone else pulls on the lever to release the bonnet then the second pull allow you to lift it up. Got that issue with mine...

Just picked up my 2022/2023 Ford Focus model on Friday and I can confirm that the engine cover is no longer, isofix covers are no longer and the glovebox tray is also no longer.

it’s a shame that for a £33k car, there cutting costs like that.

What’s next,  door missing?

I've been looking into getting an engine cover for my 2022 Mk4 Focus. The insulator and studs seem to be available for dealers to order, but not now the cover itself. Looking into it more this morning, it now seems that in November 2021 (possibly 2020, I forget), Ford issued a directive saying it's a discontinued part and was left off because of problems with engine cooling.

Strangely, Ford UK's tech team never mentioned this to me at all when I asked them a few months ago, via Ford's customer services. They only said it had been left off due to 'Team Value Management'. I asked the tech team what they meant, and it basically means saving Ford money.

I'd be interested in others' views about this.

Ford had a recent annual R&D budget of about £5 Billion. If they want to leave off an item on a car, they can do what they want. You can be sure it won't be safety related, and if they want to save costs, that's their right, they're a profit making business. Anyone on this forum will not have access to that amount of research money. If you want to fit an engine cover, seek out a used one from a breaker, even a used one is likely to be in great condition. Your car will perform no better with it fitted, of course, the added weight may disrupt your fuel consumption.

This is what I suspected. Thanks for the tip about used covers.

Yes, there are lots of used ones for the Mk 4 on fleabay for instance from under £30.

People like Pumaspeed and Sico sell new ones for the Mk 3 Focus and Mk 7/8 Fiesta, but they are different to the Mk 4. Not seen any new Mk 4 ones offered.

It's only a cosmetic item, too small to have any sound deadening effects I would think. I have fitted one to the earlier version of the ecoboost in my Fiesta as there are lots of trees where I park and it does help keep stuff off the coil packs, etc.

I'd definitely feel better having one fitted, to protect from a build up of dust and the like, over the years, as I'd like to keep the car for a long time. Also looks better. Currently it looks like some sort of chemical plant. The cover only covers some of the parts, but better than nothing.

Does anyone know if an engine cover for a Mk 4 Focus could be easily fitted by myself, or is it something which a technician would need to do? It's five parts, I understand: cover, insulator, and 3 studs (all of which I have part numbers for).

Fitting it myself would assume that I could get all the parts, of course. Maybe it is a job for a dealer to do, and they seem happy to do it if I supplied the cover.

All you need to do is screw in the studs.  The cover itself is designed to be easily removed & refitted by the driver.  No need to go to a dealer.

Thanks, I assume the insulator - a part I understand is needed beneath the cover -  somehow slots or just rests beneath it. The insulator seems to be one part.

The foam insulator is already fitted.  Or at least it is on mine...  Early 2021 model without an engine cover.  If you're unsure, post a picture of the top of your engine for us to confirm.

Thanks, Tom. On the first photo:

A - I assume this sticks up into the cover and possibly requires a nut. So not sure why 3 studs are needed to fit the cover.

B - I assume this isn't exactly an attachment point, but simply rests in a space on the underside of the cover (see other photo.) Or maybe that's the insulator.

C, D - attachment points requiring studs.

I've also attached a poor image which Ford UK's tech team sent to me months ago, when I first started asking if a cover is available (yep, I'm a true beginner 🙂). The labels on Ford's image do not appear to be part numbers, as they don't match the numbers I have, which I know are correct.

Yes, as Tom says once you screw in the studs the cover just pulls off as required. I've not looked at the Mk 4 fixings, but assuming they're similar to the earlier version you might need a socket for a final turn after initially doing them finger tight. The early version needed a 12mm.

6A957B on the Ford diagram is internally threaded and will screw ONTO this stud. No nut involved.

The other two will screw INTO threaded holes.

It will probably seem a lot clearer once you have the parts and can see where they will physically fit.

No problem.  Fixing points cleared up in post above.

The big orange thing is the foam insulator.  That is already fitted on the photo, you can see it most clearly around the filler cap.

Those are not part numbers as such.  That's a screenshot image from the Ford parts catalogue. Clicking on them would bring up the real part numbers in the online catalogue.

For older models we can access the catalogues using 7zap or catcar.  But unfortunately, they've never been updated to include the Mk4 Focus.

Thank you, Tom.  Good job the insulator is already fitted. Looks pretty involved getting it on.

I'll just give my 2 cents on this : i had a mk2 focus with an engine cover . The manifold bursted and started a small fire that spread to the engine because of the cover .

I have a mk4 focus now and i'm glad i don't have the cover .

I live in a country that has hot summers and my engine has to breath well ...
