GPS not working after SYNC3 update

Featured Replies

My car is being worked on tomorrow to hopefully solve this problem.  I spoke to the engineer on the phone about updating my wife’s fiesta, and suggested that since its out of warranty, i might try the cyan labs route.  He said it should work however, he stated that using the cyan labs fix would invalidate the warranty where one existed.  I’m going to assume there would be a way of them telling, maybe in a hidden log file somewhere, or a telltale installation trait.

Since its out of warranty there is no reason not to choose cyanlabs for the update. At the worst case that gps signal get lost you can go back to 3.3 version where everything is working correctly.

I believe that if update with cyanlabs finishes without problems there is no way ford to discover and invalidate the warranty. Moreover if everything on sync works fine i see no reason ford or you deal with warranty.

As i mentioned before , the last working ( as a matter of fact , the only one i knew , as i never upgraded since i bought the car ) was a sync 3.3 build and i guess not even the final one . So i held my breath and took my chances to downgrading from 3.4.21020/maps f10 to the last 3.3 available at cyanlabs and , boooooommm, gps working again!!! To say my full truth , i even like the old interface more than the new one . The clock issue is also fixed , i guess because navigation is working again. I am definitely cancelling my appointment to have it checked by Ford , and i will just be around to see if a working 3.4 build that works in every unit will come around.

I applied the same solution and....It works!!!!!!!!!!. Thank you!!!!!!! (after the downgrade I had to do a reset)

I also prefer the old interface.

Hi,

Just to add to the discussion, I had the same problem (no GPS after SYNC update from Ford website) as reported here with my 2019 reg.

I followed the process highlighted above (download downgrade package through Cyan labs and install) and this now seems rectified. I'm running the old SYNC version, but with updated maps, thanks to the Cyanlabs download.

I wont be upgrading the system any time soon.

What happens if Cyanlabs can no longer offer updates (perhaps they choose not to or perhaps Ford take action to prevent them)? Can the car still be updated using the Ford system or would that be the end of any future updates?

That's exactly my concern. If we stay at working 3.3 version we will be capable of installing the latest maps updates? Do not forget ford believes that we have latest 3.4 version.

If i was brave enough and have plenty of time i would try to install every 3.4 version from oldest to newest to see if there is any that gps works with it...

Sorry.  Should have been more specific.  My car is in warranty, my wife’s is not, hence why the dealership is doing the work on mine. I’m nervous about using the software as I’ve heard some tales of bricked systems and the like.  That’s an expensive fix i can ill afford.

When my CYANLABS install for 3.4 Build 21194 (Navigation F10) showed the "No GPS" logo, I reinstalled the previous CYANLABS 3.4 Build 21098 (Navigation F10) to solve the problem. I did not go back to 3.3.

ok now i understand. I believe that cynalabs process is straighforward and with minimum posibilities of fail.

That's great news. So there is a working 3.4 version that fixes the "no gps" problem. You put me in thoughts to do the same in my focus !!!

One more info. Today i logged in official ford account and guess what!! The sync update link is greyed out and says it 's not for your model. I suspect they realized the problem and try to fix it uploading a suitable update. I hope i am right!

Update on mine. Waited over 2 weeks for parts, didn't tell me what parts. Got them fitted today and told me they replaced the GPS unit/antenna... Which hasn't fixed it like others on here have found out *facepalm*

They are keeping it to have a further look, tried to tell reception our findings but they don't listen or understand, very frustrating.

That’s exactly the same conversation I’ve had with mine just yesterday, with the second attempt at fitting a new part.  They are keeping it for a bit longer to try and fix.  I’ve got a horrible feeling that its slowly killing parts of the car, as about an hour before they rang me, my ford pass app notified me of a hill start assist fault, whilst the car was still at the garage.

hill start assist fault,

The car battery is getting low and needs charged. Often happens when vehicles are being worked on and the ignition is left on. Many garages now have a battery support supply (fancy battery charger) that they connect while working to save the battery running down,

Also comes up after doing some module configs for some reason 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ok - further update on my sorry tale.  Car has now ‘killed’ 3 chips.  Ford engineers term, not mine.  They are sending a senior level tech to look at it.  Perhaps I have a rogue unit, as the engineer confirmed that the other cars with this problem he has seen, have been fixed with the chip swap.  The car remains at the dealers at least until tomorrow.

I’m beginning to get annoyed now.

..... and there is your problem !

Garages very rarely have Engineers, some have technicians, and even fewer have specialist electrical technicians. From the people I've delt with in diffrent dealerships in the last ten years (Ford, Vauxhall, Jaguar, Land Rover) there level of understanding of the vehicles electronics is at best poor/basic.

I doubt very much if the technician is swaping 'chips' far more likely that he/she is changing the APIM. As however many on this forum have discovered the issue seems to be the latest software release and the fix is to down grade to the previous version. Maybe it would be a good idea for your garage spending sometime on this forum and read the problems and fixes that members have discovered for themself.

I doubt that they have managed to get hold of 3 new APIM's to swap out. More than likely as @idcool discovered, they are changing the GPS unit and discovering that it still doesnt work and assuming its 'bricked' the new GPS unit, when in reality, the combination of old APIM and new software likely is just not initialising the GPS unit.

So a very long chat with the senior guy who confirmed that my car has rendered 3 brand new modules ‘dead’. When you try to run any form of diagnostic on the APIM after it has been fitted, the diagnostic fails. Apparently Ford are aware that this does happen with a small number of cars, and they have to discard the modules as they cannot be accessed to overwrite new software.
Ford are aware of the downgrade options presented by “third party” software, and whilst this may work for some, in my case it wouldn’t, and perhaps for around 20% of these cases.
They’re waiting on a call from another software team tomorrow.
hey ho. Such is life.

Hmm, personally I doubt its your car causing this, as the APIM worked fine (apart from the GPS) before this and to make the replacement modules "dead" would need to be some sort of mad power issues.

Here's an idea for your ford tech's to try with the next Apim that they try and fit.

Fit the new APIM it to another focus, run the diagnostic, make sure its ok, update it, confirm it works and then fit it to your car.  If your car is the issue, it will then fry a known working good unit rather than potentially being unlucky and being supplied with 3 x non-working units.

Personally, that's a step I would have taken after it "fried" the second unit. not waited until its fried 3 of them...

I'm beginning to serious mull the Cyanlabs route for mine ... it doesn't look like there will be the software update to fix this anytime soon.

It’s a nice idea, and I think it was tried with the last one fitted, as the tech said it was a verified working module.  One assumes this sort of method is used.

I must admit to getting really annoyed at Ford HQs lack of action on this issue, as its growing in number of affected cars.

Just an update on mine, Dealer had it twice now, first time for a day, then for a week after the gearbox also failed. They said they were waiting for more information from Ford on what to do to resolve the GPS issue. Anyway, I used the Cyanlabs tool to downgrade back to the last 3.3 update and my GPS started working again. I then used the same tool to upgrade to their latest 3.4 and the GPS is still working.

It seems to me that Ford just need to release a new update to their webpage and reset everyone's status to "update required".

Very usefull reply. Can you tell the exact 3.4 version that worked for you?

Have a look at my post Friday at 09:10 PM on this link:

I have just had mine in at evans halshaw in preston after a 6 week wait for this issue. Just had a call back to tell me they can't fix it and ford are aware of the issue and it should be resolved in the next update so I have to wait...how long who knows. I'm just being palmed off with an excuse by the dealers and I have to accept it. Really annoyed because I wanted this feature in car. The entertainment unit in my corsa was better than this and that car cost me half as much. Sort it out ford!
