Obd Relocation

It's definitely something that I would recommend, even over a Ghost system.

Unfortunately though I have no experience of doing it, just heard about it and the benefits.

Just pop it out of it's fitting, fit the adapter and find somewhere tucked right up out the way to tape it or zip lock it in position. Best to use an adapter, so any one who breaks in will think it's real for long enough to feel under time pressure when they can't get the car re-programmed. They'll figure out its been tampered with but it takes a time to reach up and find the real one and by then they might give in and cut and run.

If you just tape it up out the way, they'll see the hole and go looking and only cost them 10-15 seconds. Hardly a deterrent.

Mine is done, plus pedal lock, plus discloc plus hykee door lock. It's just layers of buggeration to make them not bother. They'll still have it if they have the time and/or really want it. Such is modern life.

Thanks Marky  good advice

Cheers

just a thought but would it not be possible to get a 2nd hand OBD port from a scrap yard and glue/screw/secure that in place of the original. also with all the pinouts available would it not make sense to add power to the plug so when it's plugged into it looks to be "live" and working even if just for a few seconds until they notice they cant connect.

If you want to be pro-active, wire up a dummy port to put a full 12V with 30A fuse through the data lines rather than power lines in the OBD. If you're lucky you'll fry the device they use to reprogram your car. Personally, I'd rather catch them trying. 😈

Hello @Chainsawcharlie I see no reason why this wouldn't work on your Fiesta Mk8. It's no different to using a 4-way extension in the house, all it's doing is lengthening the cable from the OBDII port. If you are going to be doing that then I would suggest getting an old wiring harness from a scrapyard and cutting off the OBDII port leaving a good length of cable attached that you can then fit back in to the original location. just tuck up the end of the dummy cable out of sight and maybe cable tie to the vehicle to make it seem like it goes somewhere.

I'm not actually a big fan of this OBDII port relocation but everyone has their own ideas on whats best for them. I have fitted trackers to all our family vehicles and they have the ability to disable the vehicle remotely if we send it a command. Each tracker was about £50 and of course it costs £5 per month for the tracking service.

Hi Folks,

Could any of you clever techie guys let me know if possible please, if this obd2 extension would work on my Mk8 2019 registered Fiesta Vignale please

Also when fitted I would not have a visible obd port, would you suggest getting a dummy one which isn't connected?

Cheers

As @unofixsays, it will work as it's just an extension lead in simple terms. Getting a port for a scrappie is a good shout, the only problem with that is that it will have no power to it. This means a thief would know in an instant that the port is a dummy, and they may look for the original. If you were clever with wiring you could make it very difficult for them to follow the cable to its new location though.

I would probably move the port, install a dummy and then use one of the locks I linked above to actually lock the dummy. I know it might sound stupid to lock the dummy but ther is method to my madness. A thief spending a couple of minutes trying to unlock the dummy only to find it has no power probably isn't going to waste more time looking for the original (which you could also lock), they will probably scarper.

Out of interest, do you live in a high crime area or have you been burgaled before? The thiefs car of choice is normally the sportier variants like the ST, they may not target your car so readily, and if that is true you might be just as well having a big yellow disc lock as a visual deterrant.

Thanks Uno and Jonno great helpful answers guys, as always.

In answer to you Jonno, lucky for me I live in low crime area but concerned when I go to places like Manchester, or Stoke on Trent etc, and park there.

Thats sounds like a great idea and I see the method fully, dumb thief enters car, sees cover over obd, thinks its genuine obd as its covered, then finds its not  then by then he's wasted time and time is running out, then the sod thinks....what other tricks lie ahead.....I know let's scarper.

Great idea mate, think I may go for that.

Only thing I need to figure now, is where to locate obd port too, where it will be easy enough for ford tech to connect to.

Cheers guys for your help

Hi @Chainsawcharlie, the trackers I use are very easy and quick to fit. You can install them basic, or professional depending on what you feel your needs are. I buy from  a company called Rewire GPS Live, you can buy direct from them or you can buy via Amazon. Often there are deals on amazon making it cheaper to buy from them. Approximate cost is £50 for the  "Rewire Security DB1-Lite v2.0" This unit has an auxiliary output that can be used to control a relay. If you want to be able to kill your vehicle in the event it has been stolen then you simply send a command to the tracker to activate the relay. Depending what you have connected that to it can be used to kill the feed to the ECU or fuel pump or anything else you fancy (some have thought a harpoon gun under the drivers seat would be the thing to have 😂).

You do have to pay a monthly service fee for the use of the tracking site which I think may have just increased to £6 per month. I normally just pay yearly hence I'm not sure of the current cost. You can set up alerts for text/e-mail etc. which gives a bit of extra peace of mind.

I have to say, I wasn't aware that the OBD port was being used by car thieves to steal our motors.

Consider me informed👍

You can clone a key via the OBD port very easily, I won't share the procedure though. Not because I dont want competition lol, but I don't want to educate anyone haha.

Considering the OBD port is basically a portal with zero security and massive potential, I'm surprised car manufacturers haven't done more to protect their customers.

The OBD port has to be accessible to anyone working on the car, close to the drivers seat, and accessible without needing any special tools...  There's not much the manufacturers can do to protect it unfortunately.
