Health issues...

A discussion thread for all health issues, good, or bad. Try not just to keep it just to a whinge on the NHS - it's not all bad, my own life having been saved on 4 distinct occasions by them... 😀

Some may know I was due to be admitted to hospital today for an operation. On arrival, I was then sent home because operation was cancelled! No beds, and no operating theater capacity. I was pretty up

Lol, no, I'm having a "fit day" today! Lovely morning here, so I drove a little farther afield to start my Sunday walk.Afterwards drove back home the (very!) long way round and had a rare opportunity to slip into Sport mode and give it some, so pops and bangs all the way home! Pepped me up more than all the pills!

How about " how many pills you take a day.

I will start at 6. 🤣🤣🤣

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

If you know those lyrics from Jefferson Airplane/Grace Slick it means you are of a certain age !

Another +ve experience with NHS...

This morning, had an appointment with the vascular/foot dept at RVH (Belfast). Had consult with the podiatrist who dressed my wounds, then said he'd get 'vascular surgeon' to have a chat with me. 2 minutes later, she was in the room saying that they wanted to do a full CT scan to analyse the arterial blood flow that was obstructed causing my current issues (linked to Diabetes).

Was also given one of those lovely trendy post surgery type sandals to wear which is quite comfy!

Was told I should have the scan within 3 to 4 weeks. On arriving home, got a call from appointment dept saying they had a cancellation for tomorrow morning. I know I'm just lucky, but still...

Was about to ring up private health care yesterday to arrange the test I've been waiting since june from NHS . Private cost would have been about £1k. Then a couple of minutes beforehand NHS hospital rang to confirm a date for test. Phew!!!  Good timing.

Yep, just the one LOL The other foot doesn't have wound dressings on it so can cope with my own shoe 😁

In the news this week on tv is another amazing hand transplant by Professor Simon Kay and his team in Leeds.

I've mentioned on here before that I was left with a useless "flail" left arm after an accident over 25 years ago now. Pioneering (at the time) surgery by Professor Kay ultimately gave me sufficient useful function to perform normal daily tasks, including driving a manual car, which I was initially told would be impossible.

Sensation in my hand is not great mind, (but I'm not complaining!) though that's the main reason I'm not very keen on touchscreens.

A top man to whom I shall forever be grateful.

In further health good news, just got back the results of my latest bowel cancer screening, which was clear.

One of our friends won't do the test as she "doesn't like the sound of it". We think she's nuts and tell her so, as bowel cancer is generally successfully treatable if identified early. I'm sure many on here would agree.

Absolutely - I'm genuine living proof of that.

I'll second that 👍

I was extremely lucky at it was not identified in me until 'stage 3' almost too late. After surgery I had a  colostomy bag for just over two years before I was 'put back together again'.

Now here is a very odd thing that's happened, where the large sticky adhesive ring of the bag used to be stuck. Three years later my skin colour is like it has has been bleached, and if I go out in the sun (if we ever get any) I'm left with a white patch about the size of a CD. All things considered a small price to pay 👍

That is fantastic the way they could 'reverse' the need for one. I keep saying, without the NHS, I'd have been dead decades ago. I had about 3ft cut out of my bowel, as a result I have a lasting side effect of getting very little notice should I need to use a bathroom. I take up to 8 x 'immodiums'/day to try and control. A small price to pay indeed for still being here...

Oh that brings back memories. I used to get through one box of 12 per day. It never felt like it was making any difference, but wasn't brave enough to try not using them. I probably still have about 10 unopened boxes left  🙂

When I went to see the cardiologist nurse specialist originally Oct 2023, she asked me questions about my health and illnesses, conditions etc. when I said just high blood pressure is all I've had in my life, plus minor issue with carpul tunnel in one hand , knee ops , she  was quite surprised. Obviously by 60 you can have all sorts of conditions then?
