No speakers except for front passenger door not working

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I bought a Ford Focus MK2 (1.8 Petrol flexifuel) from 2007, and I noticed that no speakers except for the front passenger door ones work at all. Front Doors have 2 speakers each (small tweeter one and lower bass), while rear doors have the lower ones only.

  1. First I thought it must be the connectors coming from the original radio (blaupunkt travelpilot ex), given that other door handles (ones for windows) work just fine.
  2. Then I replaced the radio with another one (mostly because I wanted Bluetooth connectivity without the need for a transmitter like before), but the situation remained the same.
  3. Then, I made an additional check by removing the plastic from driver door to check if there was something wrong with the speakers themselves, and I did an additional check by unplugging the small tweeter speaker from the connector, then plugged it into the passenger front door - it worked. Checking the cables visible in the door, nothing seems broken, and the both the speakers seem fine. I didn't have the chance to check the rear door speakers, but at the moment I can only assume that the situation might be the same there.

Reading through various posts I could only think that the cables might just be broken somewhere before they even get trough to the doors, but cannot be sure. Didn't have much luck finding an easy way to identify the root to the problem on youtube as well.

So, again:

  • Front passenger door speakers (2x)- both work
  • Front driver door speakers (2x) - none work
  • Rear driver door speakers (both sides 1x speaker) - none work.

Any kind of suggestion is more than welcome, I'm new to this forum and to Ford in general, so appreciate any help!

The standard Focus MK2/MK2.5 speakers are poor quality and are well known to fail prematurely. It is not uncommon for several speakers to fail at around the same time.

The tweeters are connected to the main speaker and do not have their own signal. I have seen before that a broken main speaker also breaks the signal to the tweeter. I have also seen that a broken main speaker causes the amplifier to go into protective mode and switches off the output to the particular speaker channel.

It is extremely uncommon to have broken speaker wiring at three doors at the same time.

I suggest to remove all door panels to get access to all speakers. Now remove the working main speaker (front passenger door) and use it to test the output on all of the other doors.

I concur about poor quality speakers. Both my rear speakers have been dead since I bought the car 5 years ago, it doesn't bother me as I have long passed the age of wanting 'bangin tunes'. Also, every other month, the driver speaker goes dead but a hard slap on the grill panel sees it burst into life. The passenger front has never given me any issues 🤣

Well that was really quick, thanks both @JW1982 and @StephenFord!

Not really that I want “Tomorrowland” in my car lolz (and definitely not even considering putting subwoofers in the trunk), but rather “I don’t want to be deaf on one ear” 🤣, as there were cases when the music was a bit louder I could’t understand what the passenger was saying because the music from his side was louder 😆.

I’ll still follow your suggestion for the amplifier check, as I wasn’t aware of the main and tweeter dependence to be honest (but yet, there are the ones at home functioning the same was, bravo myself genius…) 😄

I’ll let you know the outcome as well

I have had this same problem before. See the thread at the link. If your car still has the factory fitted head unit, it has a function to test the speakers. There is a video at the link showing how to do this.

Do you have a multimeter? This can be used to test the continuity of the speaker coil. They normally fail as the coil burns out.

The speakers are pop riveted to the window regulator sheet steel. The rivets will need to be drilled out to remove them.

Try to find a set of used speakers from a Ghia, Titanium or ST spec car. These had better quality speakers from the factory, which do not seem to fail as often. These have dark blue plastic speaker cones so are easy to tell apart from the lower spec ones. These cones were made from black paper.

Hey @AntonovAN12, so the car had the original radio (blaupunkt, but not the 6000CD, I’ll post the image below), and I did that balance/fade test while I had that unit inside, but only the front passenger one had the sound.

Good question about the multimeter though, just bought it recently for these tests, didn’t have the chance yet to do the continuity test, I’ll do it in the next days when I get some time.

I also agreed to purchase the used ones (from a ford car part dealer), the 3 pieces of the main speakers (confirmed both tweeters work already)

Try pressing and holding these two buttons at the same time.

This may access the speaker test mode on this unit.

hey @AntonovAN12, I already replaced this radio with an aftermarket one, which also has the option to test out all speakers (front and rear), but only the front passenger one still has sound (it has a "pull" to each corner of the screen representing each speaker).
I am still to check the continuity against the speaker coil, and will let you know the results.

  • 1 year later...

Hey, did you find a solution? I have the same problem, one speaker plays, but when I enter the speed bump, once a month for a while, all the speakers start playing. The problem of the radio was ruled out, I checked it.
