  • Any good tips to look after a diesel car? Yes, don't put petrol in it 😉

  • But where is the fun in that ? froggy88 is never happier than when he has something to worry about. Now he's going to start and worry that he's got nothing to worry about !! 🤔

Surely that would cause a blockage? Seriously, I used to use Miller's occasionally if having to fill up with dubious fuel from certain supermarkets. I very much doubt I'd bother now, might just a

Deactivate stsrt-stop?

I am of the opinion that it is generally bad for the life of engines, starters, alternators and batteries, be it petrol or diesel.

Saving about £50 in fuel over the life of the car doesn't seem to be worth it.

Same here I always turn mine off every time I start the car.

How do you deactivate start stop and what is it?

No need to go fast, only high rpm.

Old car with old egr and no dpf.

Old egr can be disabled.

I rarely deactivated stop/start myself.  In fact I like the calm it provides while waiting at traffic lights or level crossings.  If you drive 'normal' roads it's likely to be fine.  Only an issue if you do a lot of town traffic.  Chances are it probably won't be working anyway if the battery is still original from 2016.

Do you suggest I should buy another battery for it? I was thinking if they had replaced it as batteries is normally 4 years.

Agree. Mine stopped working a few weeks back but I suspect the battery is on way out front a quick test due to age  but when I service it at end of summer I will replace it with a new one before winter.

I do feel though that using start stop long term would have some effect on components lifespan but how much I really don't know

No, I wouldn't.  If the car starts fine and you're not getting any battery warnings then the battery is still fine.  Stop/start isn't a necessity.  As you'll see on here, most deactivate it anyway.

That is what we might expect on paper.  However, in the real world, I've driven cars with stop start since 2018 and not had any failures relating to that at all.  My Golf is on 112k miles on the original clutch, DMF, starter, etc...  The starter motors and batteries are different for SS cars, so they don't really get damaged by SS.  There is some thought about the engine components taking a bit more abuse, but I've known quite a few delivery drivers stopping and starting engines for hours every day without breaking the engine at all...  Each to their own at the end of the day, my own testing suggests there isn't a noticeable increase in wear from using stop start, but if others want to deactivate it every drive then that's their choice.

That's a fair point. I did read that the components of a SS system are made a bit stronger to take the abuse from the normal workings of it but I haven't tested it long enough to see if it makes any difference to the lifespan or even if the fuel savings are much. I always feared that if in operation in traffic the SS kicked in and wouldn't start again but thank fully this has not happen and I'm unaware of it happening to anyone so it must not be an issue with these modern systems as I think the system automatically disables if the battery is below a certain voltage to prevent this type of thing.

It won't save a noticeable amount of fuel.  It was never designed to do that.  The main benefit is reducing exhaust emissions in built up areas where traffic sits idling all day every day.

That makes more sense. Every little bit helps I guess.

My son had this happen to him on his driving test, not in a Ford but in a Mini. Stopped at a set of traffic lights, stop start switched off the engine. Wouldn't start again. Examiner didn't know how to get it started and it was near the test centre at the end of the test, so the examiner left my son in the car at the lights and walked back to the test centre to fetch the instructor who owned the car.

Meanwhile the police turn up to find my son in a car on L plates, unsupervised and unable to get the car started. The police couldn't start it and neither could the instructor when he returned to it. The car had to be recovered on a breakdown truck.

Amazingly, after all that, my son passed the test.

@pcaouolte congratulations to your son 😊

Picked up my new car, the ss did work on my car and started up no problem. Need time to get used to it though and everything seems so sensitive.

I think the best advice to give you is to stop reading stuff about your new car on the internet and frightening yourself, keep using good fuel and engine oil, and enjoy driving your car.

Stop worrying about things that will likely never happen!

Also, in an earlier post, you were talking about getting glow plugs. Don't bother, these are normally only changed when they go wrong (quite rare)!

Agreed. Only ever replaced one in all the 9 diesel cars we've had. And that was at 13 years old.😀

I've just had a terrible thought 😲

Have you checked that you have the locking wheel nut key ? and if you have, does it fit ?

OK guys I will calm down with the worrying 😂

@unofix yes I wrote a list down on what to ask in case I forget 😂

Here's my new car 😊

You do realise he's now going to have to check through every item to check the Ford Build Sheet is correct!

10 hours ago, froggy8 said:

has anyone heard of GAP insurance? just had a read online and it seems like a good idea.

what do you guys think?

Depends on how cheap it is and how likely you think the car is to get stolen or written off within the first couple of years.

In theory it's a good idea with a loan but if the car is only losing £250 a year in depreciation, and you're having to pay £250 a year for GAP insurance, then it's not worth it.
