I am pretty certain that he is right and would counsel you not to throw good money after bad.

In your position, I would advertise the car as it is, declaring the fault openly and get rid with a clear conscience then start again.

I would never sell anything that I knew wasn't going to last long, and cost someone a small fortune. That's not my style.

But I hate selling privately.

I'll probably part-ex it with the Ford dealer who repaired it.

  • If the battery is original it'll probably be flat by xmas even if you disconnect it.  Would be better off leaving it connected and using a battery charger on it every couple of weeks. Worth notin

  • Not sure if this helps but Ford have a sale on and Im in the same position as you, do I get the final major service at ford for the stamp or do it myself, my thinking was I have modified my car so muc

  • An hour is nowhere near long enough for such a small leak.  Needs to be done overnight at minimum. Chances are it's only leaking when hot as well, which will make it even more difficult to locate

Is it worth fitting a new engine isn't that about the same price as the current value? 3K.

Edit.. sorry I meant replacement engine either s/hand or refurb

I'll speak to the independent mechanic I sometimes use, to see the cheapest way of sorting it.

I spoke to him at lunch, and I explained the situation to him fully.

He said that I’d been ripped off by Ford’s, for a job that should have cost in his words “a hundred and odd pounds”.

As for possibly having internal engine damage, he said that it was highly unlikely, as at no point was the antifreeze/coolant level dangerously low (ie below the minimum point).

He said that as the car didn’t overheat once, and it simply had a slow leak that was tricky to find initially, the engine should be fine.

Oh dear !!!

There speaks a mechanic with little or no knowledge of the 1.0 EcoBoost engine. 🙁

So if the engine is damaged internally, what will have caused it exactly?

And what will happen to the car?

Will I get an engine warning light on, or will it just break down at some point?

It will break down. It will do so at an inconvenient time and place, possibly dangerously so. It will do so soon. If your dealer will take it as a trade in, brush your teeth before biting his hand off.

Is that with the Colgate ring of confidence ? 🤣

I’m not sure why (probably because before I had the leak fixed, I was checking it every day or so) but since I’ve had it repaired I’ve still been checking it probably twice a week.

A few days ago I checked the level, and it was under (although not drastically under) the min level.

I topped it up. I checked it again at lunchtime today, and the expansion tank was almost empty!

I phoned the garage who fixed it, and they said they were booked up all week.

So I told them that as I had paid almost £600 to have it fixed, and it was still leaking, that I would drop it off after work tonight, and they can keep it until it’s repaired.

They then phoned back, and said to drop it off tonight, and a mechanic will take a look at it tomorrow.

Goodness knows what’s wrong now, but let’s hope they don’t try to charge me more!

Ironically the car’s running fine, as it has done all the time it had been leaking.

I despair. Haven't you learned your lesson yet?

Some are beyond help.

Same as what was wrong the first time, the engine is scrap.

I can't believe there's no oil in the water or water in the oil, might not be a duff engine quite yet ?

You're just late to the party 😉. You missed the good photos posted at the beginning of November.

After checking the coolant level last week, I noticed there seemed to be around an inch of something that was floating on the top of the coolant. You know like oil would separate with water?

But it was a light beige colour. Today I got a pipette, to empty the expansion tank. I then rinsed it out the best I could, but haven't re-filled it yet. The inside top of the expansion tank was also covered in a type of beige cream/foam.

It's booked in for early December, so I may ask them to also replace the expansion tank if it won't come clean when they flush the system/replace the coolant.

Ooh yeah milkshake mix, had a head gasket go on an old PUG206 and it went like that, oil in the coolant, coolant in the engine. Milky foam all over the place. Wasn't pleasant.

Your engine is toast. If not head gasket then cracked head. Sorry for you.

You were told a month ago but you won't hear us.

I heard you.

But as I have no other mode of transport for now, and apart from the leak the car is driving 100% fine, just what do you want me to do?  🤔

If its anything like my PUG it does seem to drive fine ( i drove mine for 2 days to work and back ) but all that time water and oil were mixing all over the place, eventually thats going to have a big impact on lots of things, the oil lubes the belts, the turbo, loads of stuff. water in it will not be a good mix.

If your having work done on it at the garage cant you just get a loaner from them? i wouldn't risk driving it know its got a suspect internal coolant leak.

That's just it, suspected.

I'm not a mechanic, and Ford have told me it's not got an internal coolant leak, but a couple of people on here say it has.

The car is in with Ford now, as it was still leaking, but not foaming. They are replacing the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor, charging me £52 just for the part, with no labour charge.

Like I said, it's driving fine for now. I'm not saying the engine's not knackered, but if it is I guess it will break down at some point.

Luckily I very rarely drive on the motorway these days. Hopefully it won't break down before I get a replacement.

Just be prepared to write it off when it goes bang. You were advised to trade it in.

I've ordered a new car, without using it as part-ex.

I guess I'll just have to sell for parts/scrap if it goes bang.

Well that's certainly one way to fix the problem 👍

It's a real shame too. 2 owners from new. Just under 71,500 on the clock. Hardly a mark on it, and a full Ford service history to boot. The salesman said they'd sell it on the forecourt.

Not bad for a car over 9 years old.  He said I'd be looking around £2,500 part-ex. Unfortunately I'd already decided on the colour and model/extras I wanted if I was buying new. None of theirs matched, (they were pre-reg), so I went the whole hog and built my own on the Ford website..

Luckily for me the car with the exact trim/colour, and extras was sitting in their stock somewhere, not being advertised, so I'd gotten lucky.

Going back to the foaming/milky coolant, It's strange how it's only happened the once.

Should it happen all of the time?

**Disclaimer**   I'm NOT saying my engine isn't toast for those who said it was!   😂

If it has happened once, then the fault is there for good and once the engine has failed in this way, it can be impossible to predict how it will subsequently annoy you beyond the inevitable pain in the wallet Foaming or milky coolant is only ever due to water mixing with the oil, usually called mayonnaise. Unless there is a crack in head or block, it is caused by head gasket failure. This fantastic, tiny engine puts out the sort of power per litre of an eighties F1 engine and tows a ton and a quarter of car about. It has to be well looked after. If you grew up with early turbo cars or light aircraft, warming up gently and cooling down likewise are second nature but  most people have never been told that and are not expected to know. Oil in the radiator is a great insulator and the mayo doesn't circulate like coolant should. Things get hot and Ecoboosts tend towards runnng hot anyway so once broken, one has to be lottery lucky to escape a big bill. At least this time you will have a decent warranty.

There is much to be said for Vorsprung Dutch Chequebook.

Enjoy your new car.
