I'm not sure whether this car is a Focus or a Fiesta?

It's a Focus.

I've just spoken with someone at work, who has a Puma with a coolant leak.

Hers is the EGR Unit that's leaking.

  • If the battery is original it'll probably be flat by xmas even if you disconnect it.  Would be better off leaving it connected and using a battery charger on it every couple of weeks. Worth notin

  • An hour is nowhere near long enough for such a small leak.  Needs to be done overnight at minimum. Chances are it's only leaking when hot as well, which will make it even more difficult to locate

The engine in your car was never fitted to the Puma.

Puma uses the later chain driven 1.0 engine with the turbo at the back.  I'll have to double check for an EGR cooler on those, but yours definitely doesn't have an EGR fitted.

Well, tomorrow is the day of reckoning!

🫣 😳 🤔

Good news!

It's leaking from the Thermostat Housing!

It will be around £400 to replace it.

That's going ahead, but now I have some soul searching to do.

If I'm keeping the car, I will get them to do the cam belt and water pump and 9 year service at the same time.

But if I'm considering putting it in part ex for a new car there's no point in doing the extra work.

Decisions decisions....

£400 sounds excessive, can you do it your self ? The part isn't expensive in the scheme of things.

  • Author

They said it's 2 hours labour, plus the part, plus vat.

To be honest I wouldn't know where to start myself, I don't even know where it is on the car!  😂

There was an inspection charge of £145 to fault find. Maybe the £400 includes that charge as well.

Please do let us know what the total is.  That sounds expensive for an independent.  But not quite enough for a main dealer.

I do feel for people who can't do repairs themselves as this is a simple job.  And while I linked the genuine Ford parts above for just over £100 with discount code, aftermarket versions are available for around £30.  I could have done this job on a driveway for under £50 in parts.

It was my local Ford dealer that did the work, not an independant TomsFocus.

Ah, that makes sense then.

Would expect the wetbelt change to be approx £1800 there.

Or over £2000 including 9th year service as well.

I had a guess back in October .....

Have you been given a price for this work ?

My guess would be £2395

Here is what they charged me.

Charge for fault finding (no idea how long it took them to find it.) £109.00 + VAT (They quoted £154 including but gave me a small discount.)

This was the Thermostat Housing they fitted = £128.27

ECOSPORT FIESTA GTDI ECOBOOST THERMOSTAT & HOUSING – Ford Online Shop UK

2 X 1L of Antifreeze = £23.28 + VAT

Total parts = £151.55

Total labour = £327.00

Total VAT = £95.71

Grand total was £574.26.

Their comments were as follows - "Coolant coming from Thermostat Housing. Advise new however, there could be internal damage to the engine".  🫢

Did you get a complimentary Brandy before they gave you the bill ? 🙁

If I decide to part-ex my car next year, shall I still get it serviced next month?

It has a full Ford service history. At this age, does that really add value?

Obviously I won’t get the Cam Belt/Water Pump job done though.

We’re looking maybe when it warms up, Feb/March.

It doesn't really add value but...a missing stamp gives the dealer something to knock money off for.  And leaving the oil change for another 3 or 4 months on a 1.0 EcoBoost could be a bad idea.

Problem is, 9th year scheduled service is expensive on these.  It includes spark plugs and air filter, as well as proper brake check, where you may find you need new pads as well as other items.  Realistically it's going to be another £500+.

You could choose the Essential Service instead.  That's £250 for an oil change and MOT.  I don't know whether a dealer would consider that as good as a scheduled service when it comes to part ex.  (I never got as far as part ex'ing to a dealer after the prices they offered!)

You could also consider selling the car to Motorway.co.uk, as they might offer more than the main dealer can for p/x.

Funnily enough TomsFocus, I did a price check on both We Buy Any Car and Motorway a couple of nights ago.

WBAC offered £2,600, Motorway £3,600.

I've been told they always knock you down when you actually take the car in, no idea how true that is as I've never done it.

WBAC knock you down.  Motorway generally don't.  (As long as you've described it accurately).

Only time I was considering using WBAC I got a better offer elsewhere and didn't get chance to put it to the test.

I have seen a post on another forum from a guy who did get the exact offer. BUT he'd inspected his car rigorously and described it accurately down to the last stone chip, leaving them no excuse to knock it down. I suspect generally though they rely on the (very human) tendency of owners to overrate the condition of their cars!😀

Nearly six hundred quid to change a 20 quid part that can be changed in ten minutes. And you still have a blown engine. I despair.

Not sure if this helps but Ford have a sale on and Im in the same position as you, do I get the final major service at ford for the stamp or do it myself, my thinking was I have modified my car so much and have no plans to sell or PX it anytime soon in the next few years was the stamp even worth it. I chose no.

I've bought a full service kit from Ford, it comes with sump plug, spark plugs, carbon cabin filter, air filter and oil for just £101 delivered and I'm currently waiting for the oil % to drop below 30 before fitting it because I've had the oil and filter done earlier in the year. I've kept the receipt for what it's worth and will write the date in my book when it's done, supposed to be done at 45K miles which is about 300 miles away.

I scrapped my last 2 cars that's how long I keep them my Audi had 190K on the clock when I got my ford 😂

I'm thinking of getting the cheapest service possible. Then again should I just bite the bullet and part-ex it now?

The expansion tank still has foam stuck to the top inside it. Surely that's a dead giveaway to someone buying it?

I guess an independent would charge around £70 to replace it. If I trade it in to the Ford garage that did the work, they will know exactly its history anyway, so is it even worth it?

Again, Motorway has people coming to view the car, where WBAC don't.

I really don't know what to do......

Cut your losses. It sounds like the engine is scrap, servicing it is a waste of money.

I predict that sometime in the next 1000 miles the engine is going to fail and your car will be worth scrap value only.

I am pretty certain that he is right and would counsel you not to throw good money after bad.

In your position, I would advertise the car as it is, declaring the fault openly and get rid with a clear conscience then start again.
