Smart Unlock Function

Featured Replies

The Smart Unlock Function has stopped working on one of the door handles on my 2022 ST Line Focus.

Last month the passengers door handle stopped working but the car was under warranty and the main dealer "reset" the handle. Now the drivers door has stopped working 😐

Anyone know the procedure on how to reset?

Are the door handles notorious for being unreliable or have I just been unlucky so far?

Thanks.

It's one of the things that shuts down when the battery is worn out.

Yep, needs a battery

Ford didn't reset it, they just charged your battery so it would start working again

Yes, charge your car battery for at least 12 hours.

The battery state of charge is low. Given that the car is a 2022 model and will probably still have the "not so good" factory fitted battery you may find that it is time to fit a new good quality battery.

Then why is the passenger and boot doors still working ok?

Have you got a multimeter and do you know how to check the battery terminal voltage ?

The hows and whys of what happens when the SOC approaches a critical level is not totally consistent from vehicle to vehicle. I repeat my advice that you should charge the battery for at least 12 hours. Normal door locking is usually then restored after the next time the vehicle driven.

Yes I have a multimeter. I will check tomorrow and report back.

Thanks

It's best checked first thing in the morning after it has stood overnight.

Check the battery this morning 12.36v.

Think I might try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting. Power cycle seems to fix most things lol.

Borderline for things operating (or not) in my experience. Take Unofix's advice and give it a charge as a first step.

No more than any other, really. They're not known as Fix Or Repair Daily for nothing!😀

The last battery I changed was at 12.43v after standing overnight.

That one gave frequent messages in FordPass about the battery being low, would not enable stop start even after being charged for 12 hours, gave frequent messages on the screen in the car about the system being off to save the battery.

FORScan reported the State Of Charge as 33%

I changed it because it struggled to start the car on a couple of occasions.

Just while on the subject of batteries failing. This is my own Focus Mk4 at 8:10AM this morning. The battery had been on charge overnight for a total of 16 hours.

This screen shot was taken with the engine running at ~2000RPM

The SOC is still only 77% despite a 16 hour charge. Note that the charging current from the alternator is 'zero' and the charging voltage is 14.60V In conclusion the battery is falling to accept any further charge and has maxed out at 77% seems like I need to look at replacing the battery which you will see is 888 days old. Somewhat disappointing since this is a Yuasa YBX7096  which is usually what we recommend on this forum.

No.  Certainly not limited to just 2022! :whistling:

I've kept a "battery diary" for my present and previous cars (both original batteries), so getting on for 8 years now.

I've never seen more than 12.43v except after a 12 hour charge, but never had any starting issues. Most of that time even S/S has been working when I've forgotten to turn it off. (As mentioned on another thread, in the current car S/S went AWOL from last June until this February when it suddenly started working again but I could see no reason why.)

As Unofix says, how and why vehicles differ is by no means clear.

The battery that I refer to above would max out at about 55% after a full charge and then drop back to 33% over the course of a week. It was just over 6 years old so I considered that it had done well.

Just back from a drive and the battery is 12.72v. I’ll check again in the morning but seems to be losing 0.4v overnight. 🧐

12.72V will be a surface charge because you checked it soon after a drive when it had been charged by the alternator. It will be lower than that after an hour and you will get a true reading in the morning.

Also I tried this key today but it doesn’t seem to work. If I turn it to the right the indicator light flashes but the door does not open. If I open the door using the fob the key will not lock the door.

Any ideas please?

Fit the key blade in to the slot of the keyfob to use it as a handle.

  • Clockwise to Lock  --  Turn key firmly to the 2 O'clock position to lock.
  • Anti-Clockwise to Unlock  --  Turn key firmly to the 10 O'clock position to unlock.

Sometimes need to spray the lock with a bit of WD40 to get it working freely.

Anti-clockwise to unlock is so unintuitive on a RHD car.  We naturally expect a lock to turn 'away' from the door frame.

Here's how the key blade fits back in to the keyfob so it becomes a handle

Are you using the keyblade stuck back in the fob?  You'll never have enough strength to turn it without.

The keyfob has a slot in it so you can use it as a 'handle' on the end of the emergency blade.

Every day's a school day. I've had those keys ever since they first came out and never realised what that slot was for.  Although in fairness I've never tried to use the key blade either.

If you want the ease of buying from Halfords they sell the Yuasa.

Or you can pay a bit extra for the Halfords version.  Which is also made by Yuasa. 🤔

Halfords EFB096 Start Stop Car Battery 5 Year Guarantee | Halfords UK

The one you linked from Halfords only has a 12 month warranty.  Not worth the hassle of replacing one cheap battery with another cheap battery imo.  If you're going to replace it, get a decent one.

Tayna Batteries = £84.80 plus £7.99 delivery total £92.79  👍

Halfords = £217.99 fitting is an option for £267.99 🤣
