Ridiculous Insurance Quotes..

Featured Replies

Just to update a few of you, and answer a few of your questions.

I have found LV are a very good company but I simply cannot afford to pay the premium they are asking, like another poster said it is due to a number of factors such as age, postcode etc.

Another poster suggested I try direct line, online they were unable to offer me a quote online, so I haven't as yet been on the phone to them as I'm sure it's going to be an expensive quote.

I will get on tinternet and have a look at the others suggested and see what they conjure up.

Thanks for all the suggestions in the mean time

Kris Eagling

I also used to work for Direct Line, they wont quote you online as the quote will be over £3000.00

You need to shop around, I was with virgin for many years, and they wanted £365.40 for 2009-10, then in April 10, I told them of my 17" wheels and zs spoiler, so added £69.30, then for 2010-11 they wanted £830.55, so found the RAC for £519.41, but changed car so they added £13.14, but can get direct line for £372.06.

Normally, I don't have time to search, as the renewal comes I look think what the.....then have to get something quickly!

what does no claims get you though? I have 8, and if I don't protect it with direct line, they only want £328.60 saving me £43.46!!

Make sure when u leave direct line you ask them to send out your full no claims bonus in years as when u get your reminder it will say 5 or more years and other insurers will only say u have 5 not your 8 plus

Just been getting some quotes as mine is due next monrth. I'm 19, 2 years NCB drive a 2006 1.25 style, best price I found was £661, fully comp with elephant.

I really do sympathise with young drivers though - prices quoted bare no relation to the increased risk, basically I couldn't afford a car if I were your age. And the reason they get away with charging these prices is because people are still willing to pay that sort of money. Everyone knocks the EU but I really do agree with them challenging the insurance industry - how can an insurer charge two different fees depending on your s*x? Take my twins example from above, this time they've just passed their driving test and both buy identical cars. The way insurance works right now, the male will be charged more than the female :o

The insurance industry stinks something rotten. And unless people do spend time searching around for cheaper quotes then insurers will be more than happy to rip you off.

I'm glad you agree with me on the insurance industry. I too, sympathise with young drivers and no way could I afford two and a half grand for car insurance. I wouldn't be able to run a car.

As far as claims service is concerned, it is true that some companies are better than others. My son has had very good response from Swiftcover with both accidents he was involved in, neither of which were his fault. One accident wrote his car off and the other a rear-end shunt.

Try Aviva, im 18 got a 1.6 tdci and im paying £1200 :) 1 years no claims

Hi all

I would again like to thank everyone for their responses, they have been a great help.

I do agree with the posters who wrote about how silly the prices are, and I can barely afford it, so know where some of you are coming from when saying you personally couldn't afford it.

One particular poster mentioned about twins getting different quotes, how ironic, but how right you really are!

I have a twin sister, although she hasn't passed her test while we were learning we both practised in my mums 1L '02 reg ( pink) :( corsa

We both were insured via LV as provisional license holders, we live at the same address, have both had our licenses the same amount of time, as we applied on the same day, had at that time had the same amount of lessons, yet her quote was £250 while they wanted an additional £600! Yes that was right £600 to insure me to drive it....

So yes something needs to be done about insurance prices and people should shop around or these companies will continue to charge horrendous prices.

I have taken notes on all the insurance companies listed and it's on my list of things to do once I have finished my flying for the week.

Thanks again to all

Kris

the first year i was on admiral an this year am on elephant (part of admiral) i think? i gettin 2 and half k quotes... add parents on it :) my mum alone on the insurance as a second driver dropped it right down

Yeah, when I looked Admiral and Elephant quoted me the same price, I chose Admiral because my sister is with them and said they were really good when she had to make a claim. 2 and a half k 0_o ouch, makes me glad I am a women, don't think I could insure it otherwise. I have both my parents added on to my insurance, brought the cost right down :D

Definitely! Couldn't afford it otherwise, but my friend told me they were thinking of increasing insurance costs for women to match mens.... :/ I really hope they don't!

the EU are looking into it as it is 'discrimination'... they said if it does pass it will bump up female costs until they find a new pricing list so to speak...

To be fair, you're not the same s*x so there's no comparison.

At the end of the day, it's young lads that cost the insurance companies more than any other group, therefore, they should pay more, it's as simple as that and nothing to do with discrimination. Why should young women pay the same when the risk isn't the same.

Now, if young women and young men had the same accident and claim statistics and one was paying higher than the other, then there would be fair grounds for discrimination, but as they aren't, then there's not.

Lads have your fingers crossed for today! Our insurance might go down and I have a feeling it will!

Ring up NFU and ask for someone called Jill. She put me on a 6months booster package but am still paying 265 a month with 2 years NCB. Am 18.

Insurers cannot charge different premiums to men and women because of their gender, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled.

The decision means that women can no longer be charged lower car insurance premiums than men.

The court was ruling on a challenge by a Belgian consumer group Test-Achats.

It had argued that a current exemption for insurers contradicted the wider European principle of gender equality.

"Taking the gender of the insured individual into account as a risk factor in insurance contracts constitutes discrimination," the ECJ said.

The requirement for unisex insurance premium and benefits will start on 21 December 2012, giving national governments and the European insurance industry time to adjust

So everyone should have to pay the same because why should a 45 yr old pay less than a 17 yr old, that's ageism.

Why should someone with no eyes pay the same as someone with full sight, that's disabledism.

Why should someone who lives in london pay more than someone in Cheshire, that's locationism.

The world has and is going madder by the day.

I can't help but agree with Keith on this one - somewhat a rare occurrence but still.

Unfortunately the crash statistics speak for themselves - uninsured drivers on the other hand cost all of us a fortune.

in all honesty it did use to annoy me when girls where gettin cheap quotes on cars, i insured a mate on mine on them daft sites and the insurance came out a good grand less and really i dont drive like an idiot everywhere like the stereotype of a lad my age... it should more so on the first year take into account the car, its value and power etc then after the 1st year look at claims made etc on top and charge on that basis and not take the person behind the wheel into account... just my idea at least :)

Surely you should be annoyed at the lads your age for driving like nobs and putting their cars into hedges and others peoples bumpers, instead of a section of the driving community who don't increase your premiums.

How is the insurance company to know you don't drive lke an idiot? That's why people build up no claims, to offer some kind of indication that they are reliable and safe drivers.

It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of insurance companies just said sod it, we're not insuring anyone under 25, it's not worth it. I'll tell you what, they'd get my custom as I wouldn't be subsidising the youths who drive recklessly. A bit like Saga but for the over 40's, that'd do me. ;)

I'm with Direct line.

I'm 28, ive got 2 years NCB, Its a 05 Silver Fiesta Fineese 1.25 no mods no nothing. *as u can see in my pic.*

It costs me 1.5k a year to drive it. Thats the Cheapest i could find. And thats also with my bro having his own policy at the same address.

Why would they do that? Insurance companies aren't some kind of benevolent entity that does everyone a favour by providing car insurance. Policies are priced in order to turn a profit given the estimated value of claims.

I can understand them aiming at the older generation to attract more business at lower risk, but with this they'll inevitably make less profit - imagine the 17 year old kid who pays 4k to insure his new car and doesn't claim on it.

NFU?! when i rung them up they said they would insure anyone under 21 -.- dam them!!!

NFU?! when i rung them up they said they would insure anyone under 21 -.- dam them!!!

Would or would'nt?

Just because i have a brand new 1.6 Zetec S, doesn't mean I drive it fast, I have the slowest ever 0-60, and barley get above that, as I need to make fuel last, if I fill up 5 times in a month, I'm skint really!

We don't all drive like idiots, my 8 year NCB will show that, only had first car (Ka) used as launch pad for speeding motorbike, I barley moved, and wrote off second car (MK6) and was I speeding? No, car infront was going slower, infact not moving, but I tried to steer on to the verge so twisted the chassis, 3rd car (Mk6.5) fine, 4th (MK7) off insurance vanity bumper replacement, and upto date on 5th (MK7)
