Ford Puma Locking Wheel Nuts

Hi,

Can anyone help?

I need to remove the locking wheel nut from my Puma and do not have the key. I've never seen locking nuts quite like this!

Any ideas as to where I can get the relevant tool from, Ford say I need the code but I cannot locate this. I can't get a tool on the nut as there is a ring around it protecting it.

Please see piccy and let me know if you have thoughts.

I cant see the picture as work have blocked the website. you will have one of three main designs... Round nuts with a locking pattern ground into them, nuts with a sort of "Torx" (Star) shape hole in the middle, there may be other designs (I wish I could see those pictures!).

You may need to try and buy a similar style key, but worst case scenario they will need to be removed by a garage. I will try and take a look at the pics when I get home, and will try and post a further update if I get the chance...

There are ways that you can resolve this. if you cannot get ahold of the key...

1) use a slightly larger socket than the nut (i.e. if the nut is 21mm diameter, will a 21 mm just fit over the top, or try a 22mm) - Basically you can mallet this socket over the top and remove the nut with a standard extendable wheel wrench, or ratchet. this can remove the nuts

2) angle grinder - the most painful method to watch, but I had to have it done on one wheel, the nut was so badly damaged that they had to try axle grind the nut then they had to take the wheel off!

3) Spot Welder - If you can get a spot welder to weld the nut to an old socket then you can remove it - yes its a waste of four good sockets, but its much cheaper than replacing four wheels!

Unfortunately I had this on the focus, so feel your pain, in the end I removed the lock nuts from the car!

Thanks for the info. I can't see a way out of this. I thought about using a slightly larger socket but there is this protective metal ring around the nut itself (which is attached loosely behind the nut) and is blocking my ability to put a socket anywhere over the nut.

I look forward to receiving any thoughts hopefully after you've managed to see the photo.

Can you just double check that the link you posted is definately right?

the =directlink at the end seems unusual. I keep clicking it and get "Page Not Found" and wonder if its a link problem in place of a work blocking everything problem?

They don't look ford standard, look like after markets, so the choice is endless.

If it were me, I would personally get a spot welder to just weld on a smaller socket and take them off, you could be searching years for that key! there isnt any sort of key card anywhere in the car is there?

Im afraid I am stumped for a way to get them off without "minor surgery"!

Unfortunately I like you have had that fate and it irritated the hell out of me...

Sorry I couldnt give good news. Mind you, I doubt anyone would succeed in getting those bad boys off in a midnight alloy wheel raid!

Hope you get them off without any damage! My stupid wheel nuts ended up costing me an alloy as they had to angle grind the entire thing off! so I hope you dont suffer the same fate!

Success!

I managed with the help of a rather large screw driver to break the metal surrounding the nut. Once this was off it was relatively easy to hammer on a 16mm socket and unscrew the damaged nut.

I managed to save myself some pennies by the looks of things.

I hope my problem doesn't occur with anyone else. It looked daunting at first!

Fantastic news! im glad that you managed to get them off, I didnnt think that would work as you said there was the roational part of the nut, but none the less, you have probably saved yourself a few quid!
