as above i need some info as soon as possible . can you just take the 1.4 out an drop the 1.6 straight in without alterations?? also do the ecu and loom have to be changed? or can the 1.6 run off the 1.4 ?? one more thing , are the mk1 and mk2 engines pretty much the same?

the rings went in my 99 focus today and 1.6 engines are the same price as 1.4 so nows my chance. any info much appreciated

99 focus had 3 ecu configurations for 1.4...1 for auto, one for with egr and one without egr. also 2 hardware types eec4 and eec5 were both used on your car on your year. you need to determine which your car has. also do homework on clutch, flywheel starter, gearbox and driveshafts ie are 1.4 and 1.6 same? i had a 99 focus that i put a 2nd hand engine in....i changed 1.6 for 1.6 but new engine had a knock sensor and original didnt. in thise case no probs as cars ecu and wiring didnt "look" for this sensor.......imagine the scenario the other way round eml on and codes for knock sensor open circuit. the reason for telling this story is to advise you to look, look and LOOK AGAIN at an engine before you buy it. take a tape measure and check everything is in same position, also check sensor plugs/looms are same fitting. check ecu pinouts are same for 1.4 and 1.6 or 99 against 2004. i can say eec4 didnt have can bus but eec5 did. if you have eec4 and you need to put a 1.6 ecu in car and its eec5 you will have a headache of MASSIVE proportions. consider if you need that bit extra power against losing mpg...also people dont notify dvla and insurance, problem is insurance loss adjusters turn cars inside out looking for reasons to void a policy, enough rambling good luck, steve

Pretty much as above.

I'm not 100% sure on the Focus as i'm an Escort man, but the ECU and wiring will 99.9% have to be changed.

Why go for a 1.6? I'd be tempted to go for a 2.0.

But the easiest way to do these types of conversion is to buy a donor car, either a written off rear/side impacted car or an MOT failure. As long as it runs, you then swap EVERYTHING over, scrap the donor car for £120+ and happy days

personally id chuck a 1.4 in>sell the car>buy a 1.6 or 2.0. much less hassle and with insurance what it is now you should have no probs shifting a 1.4.

if you want power and your budget allows maybe something like this

vinny is bang on but is it worth it on a 99 focus (no disrespect but when you end up removing a dashboard to change loom surely you will think "wish id never bothered")

anyway good luck whatever you decide,

regards steve
