Wizhunter
Hi Guys Almost bought my 1st Ford for a few years after being a Citroen owner. The Car is a 51 Plate Mondeo 2.0ltr TDDI..Its Only cheap but the mate i am buying it from says it isn't getting its full power because of the Air Flow Filter needs Cleaning..He says he knows someone who can do it in the new year but i need the car for work etc.So i am wondering if its an easy fix, that i can do myself or is it a money eating problem that i should leave well alone..He said there is no smoke when you drive it..it just lacks power Thanks Wiz
FOCA
Do you mean the air filter?
Ford Loyalty MK3
Sounds like your filter might be clogged, best bet is to check out first, removed the air filter check the filter is clean, if its black and dusty replace as your car needs clean air, as diesels need air for the combustion process to work. Remove the 4 screws on the air filter housing, there are three clips at the black, tilt the housing for the clips to relase there you can see the air filter, if you want to be really sure check the hoses and clean them if requied. Carb cleaner or maintence spray should do the trick, make sure its dry before fitting. :) If that doesn't inprove power, then check the MAF sensor/Mass Air Flow Sensor, which located by the air filter, clean the contacts with a cotton bud, spray some WD 40 on the end of it and clean the contacts, use the other end of the bud to dry the contacts. Hope this will help. :)
Wizhunter
Thanks For The Advice..I thought i had never heard of an Air Flow Filter..As long as i know it won't be costly to fix i can go buy it Thanks Again Wiz
mintalkin
if you use a cotton bud be carefull not to damage the sensitive electrical wires,wd40 tends to leave a residue so you are better to use a contact cleaner like this, http://www.screwfix.com/p/wd-40-specialist-contact-cleaner-400ml/92716
Ford Loyalty MK3
Thats a lot better then my idea, plus last thing you want is to bugger the contacts up.

BigD
Just to add - WD40 is EVIL. Boils my pee the way it is marketed as a "one-product-fix-everything" solution. It's not. It's dangerous if misused. The MAF ain't a cheap part and I can virtually guarantee WD40 will kill it. It's a penetrant, and it will penetrate (and therefore break) soldered joints in electronic components, as well as leaving a horrible residue which will attract every bit of dust, dirt and filth that goes anywhere near it. Never ever EVER put WD40 on or near electronic parts. It will destroy them. Just don't do it. It also is not a lubricant. Yes, it lubricates, but that particular property is very short-lived. For cleaning electrical components - Servisol switch/contact cleaner. For lubrication of moving parts - a good quality light oil. For undoing rusty bolts - WD40.

Agreed - WD40 aka fish oil - once marketed as "rocket" WD40 and was the "universal alixir" (that can fix everything on the car) like other stuff in cans are - moterists must have an illogical compulsion to believe that if they spray something on/ in their car/fuel tank its going to fix/ make the car faster (eg - EGR cleaner/ BG69/ redex/ fuel additives/ v-power etc etc ) Many TDDIs often don't have MAFs anyway
Ford Loyalty MK3
As they said above don't use it, Sorry for the whole confusion.
