chris1959
I have a 2003 2-0 litre Ghia X petrol. When I start up from cold the rev counter goes up and down and nearly stalls after driving for about 10 mins it settles down. Also when driving the car jerks every so often. I have replaced the throttle position sensor and the idle control valve. Also cleaned the throttle body. Any suggestions to what else is the cause would be much appreciated. jeebowhite
MAF is one thing, this sounds more EGR to me?
chris1959
Just one other thing I replaced spark plugs recently could this av something to do with it? Sent from my HTC One using Ford OC mobile app
jeebowhite
That would probably be it, first of all, whats the brand that you put in? and did you gap them?
chris1959
Just bought the cheapest from GSF car parts. Wouldn't have a clue how to gap them mate.
jeebowhite
Hi Chris, In which case this is most likely the issue. to gap them correctly you would need a gap adjustment tool. Even then with the right gap, your looking at the performance factor of the plug. Take this thread for example: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/57743-spark-plug-issues/ You need the right part, and the right gap, oherwise the spark isnt lasting as long as the combustion cycle. which means rather than efficiently sparking 100% of the fuel, all 4 cylinders are only sparking say 50% - 80% of the fuel and its cycle, Overall, your engine is under-running anywhere between those figures. chris1959
Thanks for that mate. Had new Bosch spark plugs fitted. The car is running better, but still intermittent jerking. Is there anything else I should be looking at.
jeebowhite
if you replaced the plugs, then you should also be looking at the HT leads, I would suggest one of those might be fayed inside causing the issue.
chris1959
Replaced the HT leads but still jerking although not as much.. Sent from my HTC One using Ford OC mobile app
jeebowhite
The only other thing I can think, is that it may be the coil pack really, that is about the only thing left? Have you checked the gaps on the Bosch plugs? that is probably the best and cheapest way to go now?
chris1959
When I bought them it said they were already gapped. Sent from my HTC One using Ford OC mobile app
jeebowhite
they are, but that doesnt mean they are right is the only thing.
chris1959
Thanks mate . Do u know what the gap should be. And how much is a tool for the job. Sent from my HTC One using Ford OC mobile app
jeebowhite
I think the gaps are 1.3 or 1.4 as standard, but most people say they should be down to about 1.0mm. you would need a feeler gauge or coin gap measure to do the job properly

chris1959
Done all that mate. But the problem still persists. My mate plugged his computer to it and it says throttle position sensor. But I have had a new one fitted, so at a loss now.
jeebowhite
sounds more like its the wire going from the accelerator to the TPS then?
chris1959
Is that the one that plugs on to the TPS Sent from my HTC One using Ford OC mobile app
jeebowhite
Yeah, that should be getting the signal from the accelerator pedal (cant remember if you replaced that?) but either way, its either a duff sensor on the pedal itself, or a bad wire between the pedal and out to the TPS.
