My Black Edition is on lease too, and my daughters Red Edition, best way to run a car I say!

  • Here you go, you all owe me £2.50 :)

  • Finally arrived yesterday, not driven it much but so far very happy. Looks good inside & out, not sure what the person who said the seats looks tatty & cheap was on about. Must be very fussy

  • Back at Wiscombe Park hillclimb today. A bit outclassed by modified competition, and just 0.05 of my PB.. but still great fun to drive.

First time I've ever done it. Always outright purchase or HP. (Only had 3 of my own). If this goes well I can see me doing it again or even buying this one at the end. Lease is about 4.3k for the 2 years with about £800 of options. After 2 years and 20k miles, I'd be surprised if it was worth £9k

Have an ST if outright performance is your need.

Re Leasing, I had a 1.0 ZS Ecoboost on a 3 yr lease originally but swapped into my Black Edition after 12 months at no extra lump sum and £7 (seven pounds) a month more.

I love that flexibility and the fact it will always be under warranty while I have it means it's dead easy to budget my motoring costs.

Who is that leasing with? I'm currently leasing my ZS for £130 a month with 6 payments deposit

Mines is a little more expensive. I'm £123.63 (12 upfront and 23 payments). I was originally a little less, but I added a spare, privacy glass and sat Nav. I think it's a decent deal.

Out of interest, did either of you take a maintenance pack for the leases? My mob want £442 for a 2 year lease. I think I'm going to leave it as I would be very unlikely (I hope) to burn through enough tires and have enough problems to justify it.

No I didn't, there's usually offers on at a Ford dealer nearby and my money is better in my wallet than a Ford dealers bank account lol!

In Autocar this week, there's a review of "Britain's Top 50 Cars".. the Red Edition comes in at... Number 5. A fine effort, and very much looking forward to getting hold of one.

This makes me wonder why the ST isn't on the list. I guess they had to choose one Fiesta, but surely the ST is worthy of more praise than the red/black edition. If it was much more expensive I'd understand, but it isn't. They could have at least mentioned why they ignored the ST, the phrase "elephant in the room" comes to mind.

To be honest, it depends on a lot of stuff whether or not it's more expensive (even if RRP was the same). Insurance for me was about £140 less (420 vs 280), tax is less, so is fuel.

I loved the ST but I found it was going to be a good £600 extra for me on a 2 year lease, then take into account the extra fuel costs for about 10k miles a year and the increased chance I might die, I thought the Red edition was a good choice for me. Plus, do they not say it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow?

But if it was penny for penny the same, of course I'd take an ST(3 in molten orange).

I agree Kieran, for a lot of people the red/black is the better choice. However if you look at their review for each car there's something a bit strange about the rating:

Red/Black: http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/ford/fiesta/first-drives/ford-fiesta-red-and-black-editions-first-drive-review - 4 stars

ST: http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/ford/fiesta-st - 4.5 stars

So they were both reviewed by the same person, and he preferred the ST lol. To be fair the introduction says they basically argued amongst themselves about which cars to include instead of being really organised about it, but it still seems silly to me. It's like writing a list of the 50 best gadgets, putting the Xbox One at number 5 and not mentioning the PS4.

The ST is more niche, more hardcore and less "normal" which is where the Red and Black fit in, between the ST and the cooking Fez.

Example:- more families are likely to buy a Black or Red than an ST.

I'm guessing but maybe it is just the sector the cars sit in?

That's true Keith, but you could say the same about the Golf GTI and the Golf R, and they chose the R.

I too wondered why they picked the red/black over the ST when I scanned through autocar, I put it down to the ST being launched in 2013 and this list seemed to be 2014 released cars.

Yeah I thought it might by something like that too, but they called it "The top 50 cars on sale today". The ST is most definitely still on sale looking at how many new ST threads there are on here.

Maybe the ST was featured in a similar thing last year?

Will they bring out a 'normal' paint job for the 140 at some point do you think?. I'd really like one of these but try as a might I don't like either colour scheme.

Doubt it! You could just get a regular one and remap?

Or vinyl wrap the roof??

thats what I've done and mine is even quicker than the red edition hahah post-50940-141755030092_thumb.jpg

I think the 138 BHP motor will become the standard.

Remapping is fine in as far as it goes if your Insurer is happy with it.

Of course the Red and Black versions have more than just a remap to get itchy where it is.

Is that a DIY red edition? Or is it a private reg? Looks spot on if it is.

My thoughts are that the reason that they have chosen the red edition is purely down to the 1.0L EcoBoost engine and it's also a usable everyday car, cheap to insure, cheap to tax and cheap to run.

The ST is most of those things too, they can't have been bothered about running costs looking at most of the cars in the list.
