Engine Stays Running After Key Removal

Featured Replies

Morning People!

Hope you all have a good weekend planned?

I have a quick question that someone may be able to help with! Namely that i drove into work today, stopped off at Greggs (hmmmmmm) and after removing my keys the engine stayed on for about a minute, then turned off. now the car is sat in the car park and won't turn over. all the power is there but the red flashing light in the middle of my dash (the one that flashes after you have locked it - top center) flashes rapidly when i try and turn it over.

the weather has been lousy last couple of days, and i have read elsewhere that it could be a bad earth, power train control module or possibly something else?

i'm leaving it to dry out for an hour before having another crack at it. failing that ill call the AA (but i would rather sort it out without having to wait ages for them!)

any help is most definitely appreciated!

Thanks for your time!

  • Definitely check all connections in the footwell fusebox. They are easy to kick by accident and a common cause of random power/system problems.

Diesel?

If so, it's a reasonably well known "feature" of diseasal engines

I can't remember what the flash sequences are. But I reckon you car is leaving the car park on the back of an AA wagon :(

i don't mind it leaving on the back of a wagon, i don't need it for the next 2 weeks.

But i don't like not knowing what the issue is!

i do love bonus features. its the first time its happened, so i can't complain too much...not like the cars given me tons of headaches!

the alarm light flashing quickly when turning over would lead me to think of an immobiliser/ignition barrel issue

Nexus, this is what i thought at first, the immobilizer, because it just doesn't do anything when turning the key. no nothing! not even a groan! i'm hoping its something simple so i can do it myself!

any other thoughts guys?

Check the engine bay fuse box for water ingress or corrosion.

thanks guys, spoke to my mate at the AA and they reckon the chip in my fob is broke and that i need my spare, which i have! fingers crossed, still need to get the chip recoded though!

quick update if anyone is interested: the AA guy said his computer reckons i need the alarm system rebooting :\

thanks for your help/advice guys, much appreciated :)

How is that done then? Just leave the battery off for a while or does it need resetting/coding electronically?

Just be useful to know in case it happens to anyone else! :)

Yeah gotta get a machine hooked up. They say a ford dealership, but AA man said any ford specialist will do. Didn't give a price. But im sure it's pricey!

When my diesal key screwed up engine still turned over (just didn't start)

Your keys should alreaddy be programmed to the car. I'd just leave battery off and try and start it again.

The AA guy tried that for about 3 mins. No change in symptoms!

Do you let your car sit ? Or had new battery

If the light stays solid. The flashes twice then flashes 3 times. That's code 23 meaning ecu as lost your code

3mins wouldn't discharge the capacitors in most of the cars electrical system. Should be left off for atleast 20-30mins

It was 1 flash followed by 16 rapid flashes

Run onboard dignostics ? Hold trip mileage reset button and turn key to ign. Go though the menu on the mileage LCD and look for dtcs and should give u a code

This can happen also if you stalled the car and restarted it too quickly.

Are u local too Birmingham ?

  • Author

No not local to Birmingham!

It started fine this morning. Drove fine. I stopped, pulled the keys out the ignition and the engine carried on running for 90s. Then nothing when I tried to fire her up. Tried doing the code but on the dash, but it only comes up with loads of dash marks and then cuts to the main distance covered screen

Your code flashing makes no sence.

Should flash 1 min. Then flash 3 times code 13.. flash 5 times code 15.

Your code should be 13 if the transponder in key is at fault.

If I was u leave battery off overnight.

Put it back on. Tap the key (blade down) (incase transponder as moved back) and see if it starts.

I say tap key down cause Iv seen a few fake keys have transponder move. (Also on your model of focus it will cut off ur starter if transponder isn't readable)
