I heard a clunky noise on the way home tonight, then went round a corner and heard metal hit the ground. I stopped and eventually found this?

I'm no expert but looks like part of a coil spring, have you checked the suspension?

It does look like one now that I look at the suspension, I cannot see one missing maybe the bottom one as it does look a bit different on one side to the other.

How safe is it to drive it? Not daily but just to a car garage?

Not sure if I would risk driving it myself, probably safe for a short distance but I wouldn't recommend it with the handling being off.

Without doubt it's a coil from a spring.

If you are driving it to the garage take it veerrrryyyy gently!! Worth getting both sides done even if only one has broken

Recovery is preferable

Very common. many people drive for years with broken coil springs, get the pair replaced and just tone down the corners till its fixed
