1L or 1.6L Ecoboost?

Featured Replies

My mum's is silent at a steady speed. At idle from inside you can't hear a thing. It's only on throttle it makes a noise. Only really wobbles if you let the revs get to low and put it under load.

  • Until 05-05-2014 the electric coolant pump is installed on the 1.0 ECOboost with a factory fitted towing hook only. After 05-05-2014 all 1.0 ECOboosts have the electric coolant pump as standard.

It's not unpleasant at all and maybe it is normal. It's just that if there was a potential DMF problem I'd obviously like to get it diagnosed ASAP. It's definitely quite throaty if you accelerate from low revs.

Mines quiet enough, and even at high speeds its quiet. Mines not got dmf to worry about, one of the reasons why I bought the 100hp then just bluefin to 140,

How is the 1.6 ti vct faster then it's replacement 1.0? It's obviously slower much less torque and no turbo!!!! I've had both,

1.6 ti vct no power low in the Rev range at all.

it has cheaper tax on the 1.0 better mpg too so less fuel costs but.....

actually the 1.0 weighs 1279kg the newer focus is heavier the old ti weighs 1182kg so its lighter 0-60 on the 1.0 10.9-11.3 secs old ti 10.2 -10.6 secs its faster with no turbo torque 1.0 is 125lbft 148lb ft with overboost for 30 secs at 1400-4500 rpm old Ti 114lb ft at 1400-4000 rpm 16valves versus 12 valves I'm not doubting its a lively car but I know for a fact its not quicker but impressive for a 1.0 you must have had bad cars mine was dynod with just a k and n filter at 123bhp and 121lbft torque 0-60 10.1 secs

how can an old car be faster the its replacement the figures tell you why

I've got the 1.6 and to be honest, I'd look at the 1L.  Or if you got the 1.6, I'd look at the Mountune MP200 package, as the 1.6 just feels underpowered/you can tell it's got more to give.

Do you mean the 1.6 ti vct feels underpowered. Or the 1.6 ecoboost SCTi engine feels underpowered?

The 1.0 is more free-revving than the 1.5/1.6 imo.

I think that's why I find it more fun to drive.

The 1.5/1.6 is faster, but it is so undramatic, it doesn't feel as fun as wringing out the 1.0.

It is probably a combination of the power delivery and noise too.

To be honest, I have a motorcycle for rev'ing fun. If the 1.6 is undramatic but has the power when you need it, I reckon that is what I want :-)

Ecoboost

1.0 Ecoboost here and I love it, has a bit of a kick and a decent engine. Cheap tax too :D

Hi,

This may seem a strange question, but How's the 1.0 EcoBoost on motorway cruising and going up hills? When you driving along a motorway and going up a hill, can you accelerate easily to overtake those slow cars in the first or second lane going up that hill?

Sorry, I had to ask these questions, because a 1.0 EcoBoost in a light car like the Fiesta, I no doubt would cope with it pretty well. 1.0 EcoBoost in a heavier car like a Focus or B-Max, surely it's going to be a bit more work for it to do.

P.S. Very nice Focus you got there Nick. I see it's got front parking sensors, so I'm assuming it's the Titanium X trim?

Liam.

My 125 HP 1.0 ECOboost drives very well on (longer) motorway trips. Overtaking and driving up hills even at higher speeds is no problem at all.

Last Year I drove my car on German Motorways which do not have a speed restriction. I drove the car at a constant speed of 160 KM/H (100 MPH) on Cruise Control for about 2,5 Hours. Even at this speeds the car accelerated relatively easy to about 180 KM/H (112 MPH) to overtake other cars. The top speed of my car is 202 KM/H (125 MPH) measured by GPS on a flat road. Even at these higher speeds the fuel consumption of the 1.0 ECOboost is pretty good.

I do not know the UK market but on the Dutch market the 1.0 ECOboost is by far the most populair engine. Most people who search for a used Focus MK3 want the 1.0 ECOboost. Especially the 125 HP version is very populair while its predecessor, the old 125 HP TI-VCT is not populair at all. This also has a huge effect on the prices.

I've read and have been lead to understand in other comments on this topic, that you have to rev the 1.0 EcoBoost 125 hard to get the best out of the engine!

Is this true Wilco?

Liam.

You have to rev it indeed but in my opinion not nearly as much as the old natural aspirated 100 HP 1.6 Duratec and 115 HP 1.6 Duratec TI-VCT engines. The 1.0 ECOboost has its maximum torque between 1400 RPM and 4500 RPM so even at lower RPM's the car pulls very well.

Next to this the 1.0 ECOboost is very responsive and revving it is not unpleasant at all. During accelleration the engine has a nice sound (some people even call it a sporty sound) and during normal driving at a steady speed it is very quiet. The tyre and wind noises are usually louder than the engine sound.

Hi Liam,

honestly the 1.0 EB is a really good as an all rounder, it's very nippy and I'm really pleased with motorway performance. Hills are not problem either. Even the garage I use commented on how good the engine is and wanted to remap it for me. I honestly don't think it needs it. Mine is the titanium with upgraded alloys and a few extra packs inc front sensors and park assis etc :)

remap it , i got 100hp ecoboost with bluefin to 140hp , goes really well and and accelerates like a 2.0 even at high motorway ++ speeds.takes alot to impress me after coming from 2.3 320hp car.

Hi Ian,

Why did you downsize from a meaty 2.3 320hp car to a 1.0 125hp? What was it before?

Liam.

was spending a fortune on fuel , heavy right foot was compulsary with that power.

That is one downsize to what you use to have. But, I can understand it was getting to thirsty to keep paying out for!

Liam.

Hi,

Theres one thing I've noticed when searching used Fords on either Auto Trader, Trust Ford or SMC Ford websites for a Focus 1.0 or 1.6 EcoBoosts. There are a lot of 1.0 (100 or 125bhp) EcoBoosts for sale, and the 1.6 EcoBoost are very few, I've only actually seen 2 so far!

Why is this?

Liam.

Simply because the 1.0 is more popular so there are more of them about. :)
