Thinking Of Getting An St

Just wanted to hear people's thoughts on a st225. I'm debating part exing my focus to get one.

Apart from the power and loss of mpg. What can I expect from one?

I've currently got a 1.6 petrol focus titanium mk2.5. It's got 50,000 miles and full independent service history. What would you value it at?

Fantastic car the st BUT 20 ish mpg, higher insurance, £285 per year road tax, I have recently sold the equivalent Civic type r loved the power but not the fuel economy or road tax, insurance was ok because im OLD lol.

my dad just sold his 61 plate 1600 zetec with 15000 miles on the clock, he bought it new 3 years ago for £10800 and the main dealer gave him £7800 against a new 14 plate focus.

If there is anyone in your area on here maybe try and meet up with them to get first hand experience. :D :driving:

I'm only getting 27/28 mpg out my 1.6. Lol. To be fair I understand you don't buy a car like that if you worry about petrol. Lol. I might do an insurance quote on one. See how much it goes up by.

I suppose £285 is not that bad really. It's only another £100 on top of my focus now.

What do you get in the way of gadgets? Would it be pretty much everything available?

I've still got finance on my current car so hoping I can get it paid off and a bit towards the st.

Might be a trip to ford at the weekend. Lol.

Is there a diesel equivalent to the st? I.e similar power output but with a better fuel economy?

I am new to the diesel scene but I am sure someone will come along with the answer you seek ,not quite a focus but a guy at work has a mondeo diesel st which seems quite quick, maybe a 2ltr diesel focus would suit you.

like you have said if you worry about fuel and tax and insurance then an st isn't for you,

Gatwick used car centre (google it) always has a nice selection of standard and tuned st's.

Another thing is TYRES they don't come cheap unless you buy ditch finders(I don't advise that).

Parkers tells you the different trim levels.

Focus ST

Focus ST-2

Focus ST-3

pound for pound the ST-2 is a good buy

My personal favourite is Performance Blue

and don't forget you can get it or buy a mountuned model and it is recognised by the insurers so you don't get stung. :D :driving:

Think the test drive will give you the best first-hand experience of what the ST has to offer ;)

Fuel consumption you're probably looking at mid 20's upwards - they give better mpg's on long runs than pootling about town. Much more civilised a car than the Type R (imho) - you can drive it around gently all day without having to pile on the revs to get it shifting, but when you want to go the turbo quickly comes in and off you go.

Tyres-wise if you shop about they don't cost that much, used to run Falken 452's and full set would cost around £260 plus fitting. I ran a set with no complaints and they lasted better than Goodyears. Am actually running Eagle F1's now but that's on 19's and the 452's have sadly been replaced with another tyre.

As for goodies inside, I've only had ST3's and they come very well equipped. Until 2010 models the main difference from the ST2 was full leather (and maybe Xenons?) but for the last year or 2 Ford upped the spec of the ST3 with things like privacy glass, auto aircon, auto lamps & wipers etc.

If you're minded to add some updates at a later date there's lots of stuff out there that's tried and tested and works well :)

I definitely agree with troy about the ST being more civilized drive than a Honda but I loved every minute of ownership of mine and for a normally aspirated engine crikey they don't aft shift, wish I had turboed mine but oh well just far to basic a car for my old bones..

The Falken 452 has been replaced with the 453 and for a mid range tyre they are damned good, goodyears have such a soft sidewall even the extra load are floppy, conti sport contact 5 is the way to go if money allows.

without question the 5 pot engine in the ST sounds gorgeous :D :driving:

The 453's were pretty new on the market when I was tyre shopping and read some mixed reviews so had to up my budget a bit and the F1 assymetric 2's won. They did feel bit different at first but got used to them now and run them on both my sets of wheels - use 18's over winter.

Salesman gave me a lift between dealerships in a 1st gen Type R when I was having my first ST test drive, having had bikes which liked to rev sky high I could see the attraction but reckoned playing with the VTEC I'd get into trouble in the end!

I really did love my Honda but its so basic its an out and out racer bone shaker, couple of years and I will get an RS once money allows, You cannot beat the build quality of a ford and the friendliness of fellow ford owners unlike other forums I can mention .

From my short trip in a Type R it felt like you were virtually sat on the floor and could hear gravel off the road pinging off the underneath of the car, bone shaker sums it up quite well!

In comparison the ride in an ST is very plush and even though I'm running 19's with Eibach springs and bilstein sport dampers it's still a pleasant ride.

The RS is still holding it's value really well - that may change in next few years if Ford do bring out a Mk3 version, from my brief drive of one they are a fair bit stiffer than the ST but I'm advised the Eibach lowering springs also actually soften it off a bit and this improves the ride. Met a fair few RS owners who'd happily swap their seats for those in my ST as well ;)

Bit biased. But I do love the st. Effortless power and great handling. Oh and if you let the ponies of the leash......... (",)

Mpg is not the greatest, but I've personally found I get around 25mpg around town and 30 -35 on steady motorway runs (70-80).

What I would recommend is don't do cheap on oil. Get good quality fully synthetic branded oil. Your mpg will go up as a result. Also make sure it's changed regularly and generally clean, I.e. Golden not black!!

Not so keen on turbo lag or the intrusive esp which brakes for you on roundabouts!

Finally, buy one off someone who is passionate about cars, your more likely to get one with a engine that's been treated right, than the usual, "we'll it's got a full service history's........" But I've never looked under the bonnet.

Good alternative to the focus st,IMO the only alternative,is a 120d bmw, with a remap it's just as quick, rear wheel drive for powerslides and gets 60-70mpg.

I don't like the 1 series. Prefer 3 or 5 but then I don't think you can.compare them to the st.

I might wait for a bit until I've made my.mind up exactly.

There's gonna be an std in 2014,that's a diesel ST btw not a disease

Mk2.5 is the better car in my opinion.mk3 is a bit Renault looking and not as good a car.

I think the mk2.5 is the best looking focus out there.

I'd go get an rs tomorrow if I had the money. Lol.

So next best thing is the st.

I was hoping you wasn't planning on a disease. Lol.
